>>

this game made me think about pride. I have legit problem being proud of something now.
>>
I will always say V is my favorite of the series. Plays with the same ideas as 4, but there is a logical goal rather than self improvement. Plus Blackthorn is an awesome villain.

I did like in VII Part 2 when they shoe in a reference to Blackthorn and he saw the error of his ways and became a good man.
>>
If any of you haven't played Ultima 4 yet, this is the best version to play.

>>
I've never touched the series until a few days ago. I've spent a few hours playing Ultima I. I just got all the gems. This is the first new retro game I've been excited about in a while. I'm looking forward to the later installments.

So far I've felt like there isn't much incentive to explore. Does this get better in later games?
>>
>>3803942
There's nothing like exploiting the chests in the basement of British's castle until you have everything you'll ever need.

Love flying around on the magic carpet.

Hated trying to find one of the Shadowlord's shards in the underworld that you had to blink all over the place to get to.

Was amused at how you could just cheese your way to level 8 with an invisibility ring, a magic axe and plenty of guards :)

well in ultima 4 the whole purpose of the game is to deeply introspect and improve as a person so exploration is pretty rewarding there

What I like about 5 is the atmosphere. You can really feel the oppression of the people and the strive for resistance.
>>
I tried out 4 but I wasn't ready for a game as cinematic or with as much dialog as it had. I guess that's kind of the appeal to this series though? Seems like people mostly praise it for the writing.

Is it fair to say that if I like my games to be light on story then this series isn't for me?
>>
>>3805342
It's more about the world than the story.
If you don't like talking to people then the series isn't for you.
>>
>>3804537
Those times, you could concentrate in making the gameplay and background good instead of trying to impress anyone with the graphics.
>>
>>3805064
Unlike 9 it's worth a playthrough, very disappointing though
>>
How do I play Ultima? What is the general control scheme?
>>
>>3806254
DOS with a Keyboard through 5. You can use a mouse in 6, but I didn't. Never played further.
>>
>>3806370
OK, I got that. But which keys are used for various actions? I don't know if manuals tell about this. I know that the 1st game's manual said nothing about that.

>>

Some tips for 5:
1) Get a magic carpet (or 2-3) early. They make things much easier. 2) Avoid, or do what I do and murder the guy sleeping in Castle Britain's basement (who sleeps in a bed on the left side if I recall and asks to join your party). He's a traitor! Plus, you need his bed :)
3) Get some skeleton keys from Minoc
4) Use a skeleton key to open the door in Castle Britain's basement
5) Open the chests from #4 above, sleep in bed from #2 above and then the chests will be back again. Plus, if you don't exit the castle, you don't need to re-use a skeleton key to get in.
6) Get Magic Axes, they are epic ranged weapons. Use invisibility rings. They are also epic.
7) Visit the keeps as I forget which one, but one of their leaders has the item that lets you climb small mountains)

That's usually how I start.

No. Only Japanese Ultima releases with English option are 1-6 on the FM Towns and for some reason the FM Towns release of 5 uses the EGA tileset instead of that one from the PC98 or X68000.

>>
>>3810223
For 8. Because nothing in it really works. The gameplay is dull, controls are terrible, the world empty and the story disrupted.
It might have been cool with more time to develop the concepts and playtest things.

9 has the best gameplay in the series and the controls work nicely. The world is interesting to explore.
It's fun once you look past the initial performance issues and the lackluster story.

I latched onto Ultima IV early with the NES version (later got a hold of the PC version). With no final boss and a focus on actions that improve oneself, it was kind of a relief to play, since it had no "pressure" to kill a big bad.

I haven't gotten into Ultimas after IV, though I've played parts of V and VI. Just couldn't finish them, and often needed a walkthrough just to progress. Also, VI seems to have a clunky interface IMO; are there any mods to fix that?

Is Ultima IV a good starting point? Got it for free from GOG ages ago
>>
>>3816362
I'd say it is a good starting point, but I'm biased since it's my favorite of the series. If you've got it, play it. For all the dated graphics and gameplay, it's unlike any other game before or since IMO.

Bedtime for me now, but I'll be back tomorrow. This thread should still be around then, as slow as /vr/ moves.
>>
>>3816362

III is a dungeon romp, IV is a role-playing game not just "adventure with power-ups" rpg game. V and VI build on IV, you get a lot out of it if you already completed IV and have investment in not just the setting but the thesis.
Ultima IV is the seed that all the games that follow are grown from. You'll see references to I, II, and III in later games but they're explained when they're used so you're not even missing out on lore.
>>
Would be nice if the xu4 devs got back to fixing the game; those hang/freeze areas get annoying to deal with. Last activity was middle of last year.

Many years ago I found an Ultima 4-6 strategy guide in a bookstore and bought it. It's an amazing book that it's half strategy guide, half novel. It implies relationships between the Avatar and Joanna I believe...it's been a long time since I've read it, but it was very odd. It's kind of like the books that came with X-Wing and TIE Fighter that detailed the backstory of the characters and the strategy guides for those games that had story chapters in between the mission guides.
>>
>>3818890
Fuck 7 and everybody that skips its predecessors.
Better play the Worlds games and Underworld 1 in that case, there you don't need to know what it means to be the avatar.
>>
>>3819001

I just remembered this.
http://ultimasixonline.thezogcabal.com/
>>
The first encounter with a gazer in the mines in Ultima Underworld, or forging your dragon skin boots, or the quests for the knights especially the awesome boss fight.
Or the entirety of UU2 that game was just so full of awesome worlds and scenarios, letting the troll loose in the goblin tower, the frozen dam puzzle, the freaky alien stuff, the academy, the crazy endgame dreamworld...

I wish there were more games as fucking AMAZING as those two (and the other LGS games)
>>
>>3820164
>>>3819001
In my case, accidentally falling into the dire spider pit and running across the egg. Then running into all the spiders on my way out when I'm too low level to fight even one of them.

That was a pants-shitting moment in my life, for sure. I have no idea how I managed to get out.

But I fucked up later and drank the easily-gotten basilisk potion and mistakenly saved. Then I had to go find the other one (I think there's two more?). That pissed me off.
>>
>>3820196
Yeah that's a good example of Ultima Underworld 2's excellent design. I'm sure most players will fall down that trap door while exploring the first sewer level in the beginning of the game, straight into the scary ass spider nest. But then you realize they're not hostile so you can move on without reloading but already lost in the next level without even knowing a way back up.
And when a quest much later asks you to get some spider eggs you're sure to remember that area.
And it's occuring naturally, without a scripted sequence or linear map design forcing you to do it.

Moments like this make it feel like an adventure and mysterious and fun to explore, something that is lost in so many modern games unfortunately.

A friend in elementary school first showed me Ultima 5 on his Apple 2 at the time. Then he showed me some of 4. I ended up buying them myself for my 286 (had to special order them because I had a 3.5 inch disk drive and most games came on 5.25's at the time).

I still wish I had my ankh and codex coin that came with them. I do still have some of the manuals, cloth maps and boxes though.
>>
Thoughts on Underworld Ascendant? What do you hope/expect/fear?
>>
Anyone like to do the character creation/tarot reading in U4 over and over again, more than play the actual game?

I'm sure it's autistic of me, but something fascinates me about it, can't quite put my finger on what, though.
>>
I've only really played Ultima Online, and Ultima 9. I've dabbled in a few of the earlier games, but never really played through them sadly. And as much as a travesty to the series Ultima 9 is, overall I enjoyed the game for what it was. It's environments were nice to discover, and some of the dungeons were fun to crawl though. Other dungeons, however, were way too fucking convoluted. I even tried to get through the 2nd half of Hythloth that was cut off due to it being such a shitshow, and couldn't make it all the way. And other dungeons just had really bad design overall. It certainly makes me wish some kind of re-make would happen with the game, since it could be vastly improved, especially on a more stable engine.
>>
It's crazy how much Underworld changed RPGs.
