This company is bad. They are mediocre game developers first of all. Sonic was "alright" and "decent" at best but wouldnt even be considered one of the best games on the SNES if it came out on it. This company was only successful because of some smart marketing ideas and Sonic itself having a nice design that appeals to kids.

Ironically, when it was successful, Sega was strongly outclassed, but the Dreamcast is actually a really decent console and should have deserved much more love back in the day. Too bad Shenmue ruined it.
>>
Cool opinions.

I still prefer the genesis over the snes, and they still are my favourite consoles.

My friends with a snes would have killed to play S&K back on the day, same for me about Yoshi's Island.
>>
>>3803420
SEGA put out many great games, though.
>>

is anyone here who didnt grow up with sega and ended up becoming a great sega fan or genesis fan or whatever retroactively through emulators or buying it?

No. I'm a sega fanboy4lyfe. But it's cool to see that it's probably not just nostalgia.
>>
>>3803428
Why didn't they just play it at your house and vice versa? That's what we all did. These are not sprawling games that take a lifetime to play and you therefore can only play them in your own home.

Holy fuck op is getting so BTFO it's pathetic just like his choice in retro games

>>
>>3803682
Me.

I didnt really give a shit about the console wars back in the day, when a friend had a Genesis I just looked at it as an opportunity to play some exotic games I'd never seen before. But I definitely considered all sega consoles to ultimately be inferior to all their competing Nintendo consoles.

That is, until I started getting more seriously into shmups and arcade games in general over the last few years.

Nowadays, I like games with little to no bullshit. I don't really play JRPGs or lengthy adventure games anymore. I guess I look for fun rather than a cool "experience" like I did when I was younger.

The Genesis, Saturn, and Dreamcast are fucking amazing for arcade ports and are pretty much my go-to systems nowadays.
>>
>>3804039
Anyone who likes good games aka action games knows that.
>>
>>3804056
I was always a sucker for what I perceived to be innovative games back in the day, or at least games that did something I'd never seen before. Nintendo definitely beat out sega on that front with the SNES, and Sony beat out both of them with the ps1/2, so Segas just wouldn't have been satisfying daily drivers for me when I was a kid.

But I love sega nowadays because their systems are chock full of games that aren't bogged down by bullshit that I now find superfluous.
>>
>>3803674
I'll bite, main difference to OP is that the NES and meeerio stabilized the market after the crash and it has spawned tons of franchises. I like how you didn't use super mario but metroid.

Both of the arguments are totally retarded though, since both SEGA and Nintendo were targeted at kids, if at all only a marginally small amount of fucking adult was interested in playing with a toy back then, most would rather go do fitness and snort some coke.
>>
>>3803720
That's exactly what we usually did.
>>
Nintendrones, everyone.
>>
>>3803420
>only knowledge of Sega is Sonic

Let me guess, you've never set foot in an arcade.

>wouldnt even be considered one of the best games on the SNES

Cute. Get back to us when Nintendo has made more than 10 arcade games. I've said it before, Sega's real competition was Namco, Taito, Capcom, Konami, SNK, etc.

Nintendo completely abandoning the arcade industry keeps me from holding them in the same regards of the aforementioned companies.
>>

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-_Tam9lv1KQ
^ Listen to this while reading the following post:

SEGA has pioneered in video gaming for over 30 years and are responsible for a slew innovations in technology, design and art.

Beginning with the arcade era, Nintendo and Sony wished they had someone with the vision and creativity of Yu Suzuki who was responsible for too many outstanding games to mention - but here's a start:

Super Hang-On
Out Run
After Burner
Virtua Racing
Daytona USA
Virtua Cop
Virtua Fighter
Fighting Vipers
Shenmue

SEGA was synonymous for merging technology and art together while Nintendo was pumping out family friendly tripe built on Miyamoto's unhealthy attachment to a stupid Italian plumber - who was created out of a technical limitation rather than any artistic vision.

Meanwhile, SEGA was pumping money into the Sega Technical Institute and looking for new avenues to evolve games beyond shallow novelties. With STI, we got:

Sonic the Hedgehog 2
Comix Zone
The Ooze
Kid Chameleon
Die Hard Arcade

Nintendo had to lean on its Western devs like Rare to make the trite and conventional 16-bit shit box look attractive to Americans and Europeans.

Now, it's true that SEGA made bad marketing and business decisions. But marketing and business decisions don't determine the quality of the people actually developing these games.

With SEGA out of the console race, they were able to focus on making games for other consoles. Which is precisely what they did and the games were fucking amazing:

Jet Set Radio Future
Panzer Dragoon Orta
Gunvalkyrie
Otogi: Myth of Demons
Out Run 2
Shenmue II
Crazy Taxi 3
Sonic Advance

Wow, look at all those amazing and varied franchises!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yzsqx5uXmpA

And I haven't even mentioned the good shit. Google is so useful for this filibustering.

Streets of Rage
Altered Beast
Golden Axe
Phantasy Star

DOES ANY OTHER DEV EVEN HAVE THIS MANY SUCCESSFUL ORIGINAL IP? LOL
>>
>>3805232
Is Comix Zone generally liked around here? I couldn't really get into as a kid. Worth giving another shot?
>>
>>3805261
I like it a lot, but it's just very, very difficult. Be prepared for that if you decide to play it.
>>
>>3803682
I had neither system because I was born in a non-latin 2nd world nation. I like Sega, or rather I should say, Sega of Europe and Sega of America. Sega of Japan can go fuck itself but what I can tell them is that in the 80s to 90s Sega, Taito, and Konami have been the leaders of hardware progress. Nintendo is practically the Disney of video games, they are too conservative and they prefer being family friendly which stops them from making much step forward. Plus they're pure dick when it comes to their products, I have been burned way too many times from them shipping way few units at launch on purpose.
>>
>>3805232
Add Space Harrier to your Yu Suzuki list.

>>3805261
>Is Comix Zone generally liked around here?
I love it. Wish it had another Act since its a little short but all in all its a great game.
>>
>>3805536
I'd assume Space Harrier was implied since he linked the theme.
>>
>>3805541
Ahhh ok. Yeah, I didn't click on the link ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
>>

Started with the NES but the Mega Drive won me over. SNES has better RPGs though.
>>
>>3805232
Super Hang-On
Out Run
After Burner
Virtua Racing
Daytona USA
Virtua Cop
Virtua Fighter
Fighting Vipers
Shenmue

b-but i literally dont think any of these games are all that interesting, i admit there was innovation there, though, but sega seems bad at polishing games
>>
>>3803682
I only owned Nintendo consoles when I was a brat. I always wanted a Genesis when I was a kid (especially for stuff like Streets of Rage and Shinobi), but never got around to asking my parents (I would always just ask for more games for my existing NES and SNES consoles instead).

I eventually did get the Saturn and Dreamcast as I entered my teen years though and bought everything I could for both consoles.

No they're not. They're much less popular, but they're not gone. There are still several excellent arcades in the US.

If there's one near you, go to Round 1. Hell, even Dave and Busters isn't bad. The two I've been to had a good selection of Sega Model 3 and Naomi games.

Sega pretty much saved the industry with the Genesis. Just try to imagine a world where all belt scroller games are limited to two enemies at a time with massive slowdown. Nintendo were cheap assholes for using a gimped CPU.

>>
>>3803682
Yeah, the games I played growing up were mostly major Nintendo IPs (Mario, Donkey Kong, Kirby). When I heard about Sega consoles, I wasn't used to arcade-style games where I couldn't save my progress and had to start at the beginning every time, so that was the biggest barrier. After a while, I got used to the arcade-style of gameplay, and gained a new appreciation for the level of challenge and mechanical depth they offered (this happened with consoles like the Turbografx 16 as well). Now when I go back to play the Nintendo games that were my favorites growing up, I find the majority of them boring in comparison. Arcade games on Sega and NEC consoles now make up my current favorite games.

Nintendo and Capcom?
>>
>>3803420
When I play Sonic games I can't help but think they don't feel as "tight" as Nintendo's platformers. Same with Alex Kidd.
>>
Honestly they pioneered entire genres. Racing and fighting games wouldn't be the same today if it weren't for them. It's a shame they don't get the same credit Nintendo does.
>>
>>3807321
I did play some shmups (mostly touhou) never any arcade fighting games though or beat 'em ups. I got into gaming with Pokemon so I was always more fascinated with RPGs and adventures and they were the main reason I sought out games as they could tell an adventure in ways a book or movie couldn't, hence I could never understand why people would like Sega and I never found it interesting...

However nowadays I don't really hate arcades as I got into shmups and I'm not even bad at it, can you recommend something to get into arcade style games on genesis?

also yes i'm 21 i never saw an arcade in my entire life, nor did i ever see a sega genesis
>>
>>3807483
>can you recommend something to get into arcade style games on genesis?
Strider, Revenge of Shinobi, and Altered Beast are classics. Gunstar Heroes and Alien Soldier are great too.

Yes, I grew up with nes and my father's various computers.
I liked nes lot but I ever preferred any pc to it, when I finally got internet jumped straight into every emulator available and so started my love for genesis.
>>
>>3807274
Dave and busters has a pretty excellent light gun and racer selection, but that's about it as far as traditional arcade games go. No fighters, brawlers, or shmups to be seen. It's mostly games you play to earn tickets or ports of mobile games. Better than nothing though.
>>
How about growing out of retarded console wars?
There's nothing more pathetic than a grown man parroting Kalinske's marketing and thinking he's a Sega fan.
If you don't like both, you just don't like videogames.

You're ignoring their entire arcade output, which was mind-blowingly high quality.

>>
>>3807430
Doing it first doesn't mean they did it well. Sure, they pioneered 3D fighting games, but Namco made them actually playable.

Your friend is right.

Is it just me or has the console wars bullshit gotten EXTREMELY bad here over the past year? Like, not just the occasional skirmish about preferring one system to the other, or debating the quality of game libraries, but insane, sweeping declarations that an entire console/company/generation was complete shit and was never good, and anyone who enjoys it is retarded.

I think part of it is that now the internet is flooded with underage tryhards who didn't actually play any of these games when they were groundbreaking.

That game is so damn weird. I guess that makes it appealing though, it's not a great game or anything but it's decent and unique, i'll give it that. Same thing goes for Comix Zone.
Kid Chameleon is meh.
