Ever tried RefleX? It's supposed to be a sequel (and the Kamui ships appear in the final fight). Not retro though, but definitely retro-inspired enough.

Played all three. RefleX is actually my favorite despite everything wrong with it.

It's a prequel to Kamui, the game even takes care to show us the premise which leads to that. The alien invasion (which starts on stage 5 of RefleX after destroying Cancer, arguably the earth federation's strongest weapon at the time) prompted the remnants of humanity to rebuild ALLTYNEX as the Neural Nest (Stage 5 of Kamui) and develop crazy mobile weapons and automatons like the Kamui fighters. All of these were still no match for the ZODIAC weapons that the invaders set loose upon the Earth.

I really liked the Ray series games as well. Got into Kamui particularly because of Rayforce.
