Is the rhythm game a strictly contemporary phenomenon or are there /vr/ rhythm games? If there are, what are some good ones?

PaRappa and DDR were the earliest ones I remember, but I'm sure there's something older

It's a more recent trend, but that's only because memory was limited way back in the day, and music can take up a lot of memory.

At this point/context, I couldn't consider "CD based consoles" terribly recent. Like mentioned throughout this thread they were rather common on the ps1 and dreamcast.

You'll need to play on real hardware without upscaling. Get good on expert level and all you'll need to do to play piano is learn how to read music and where to put your hands for which keys

This is pretty neat. Any other pre-5th gen rhythm games?

This is the only actual /vr/ thing I've ever heard that Bit.Trip actually sounds like.

Konami also made a bunch of 'em for the GBC, such as pic related and the beatmania GB games.

Bust a Groove 1 and 2 are fucking amazing but I just couldn't get into Rhythm Summit 2001. What the hell even happened?

Whoops, meant to quote >>3797082. But I approve of IIDX also, currently in the process of getting gud. Pop'n Music is also really fun if you've got a money to burn on controllers.

Heh, I haven't looked at it that way, as I had only accepted the quirky character designs.

I appreciate that you appreciate a variety of games too.

I think the concept revolved around group synergy rhythm, so they went with the more is better concept and expanded the game to 4 player. Also the game can be more interesting with the special controller (box pictured on the upper right which can be cost prohibitive, so it may not be an experience many would go for. The new characters seem less distinct and memorable as the original crew of the first two games. The biggest sin may be its less varied playlist of songs. I only got 2001 because I enjoyed the first two only to be a bit disappointed. Still was fun to experience in its day.
