Completely disregarding gameplay, which fighting game series features the coolest setting, continuity and/or cast of characters?

This question is actually more difficult than I thought, there is no series I liked as a whole.

That said, I like the way Fatal Fury evolved as Mark of the Wolves. It was the most classy step for a franchise I ever saw. Fortunately, gameplay is as good as it looks.

Pic unrelated.

For me it's MK but thats mostly nostalgia at this point

I for one like the simplicity and huge potential of the premise in Eternal Champions

Shame the actual game is so stupidly unenjoyable
>>
>>3793619
i agree. great music, character design and concept. also the best animation for a fighter outside of capcom in my opinion. the multiplayer is fun, but the singleplayer ai is very frustrating to play against. i heard the sega cd version is much better but havent played it

>huge potential of the premise in Eternal Champions
But many western fighting games have the same premise, Time Warriors, Timeslaughter, Time Killers, Savage Warriors. And at least three have a caveman character with some stupid name like Thugg, Ug and Slash.

This is just a lazy way to justify bringing together warriors from different countries and origins.
>>
>>3793439
I always loved street fighter Alpha's aesthetic and narrative, as well as the music being fantastic, particularly 2.
>>
Purely on the setting, continuity and cast? Mortal Kombat.

Easily, Mortal Kombat.

Which is just as well, because almost everything else about the series is garbage.
>>
Guilty Gear is probably the best overall. Cast is unique as fuck and well developed. Setting and continuity ditto. OST is just icing on the cake. Oozes charm.
SamSho and Last Blade stand out in terms of setting and ambience.
Vampire Savior/Darkstalkers is memorable at the very least and has lots of charm.
Never played the old MK's but 9 was a really pleasant surprise.
Regarding more classic fighters, I'd say SNK is a lot better than Capcom at this, maybe with Garou leading the pack, KoF tends to have too many characters for them to actually stick in your mind, even though individually they're usually better than SF's.
Alpha is the best from SF... still SF though... So yeah...

You have great taste.
>>
I kinda dislike asking it here, but maybe it will be relevant.

I recall there being some fighter on SNES, where one of the gimmicks is that characters had hard points on their bodies represented by bezels, and when the bezels lit up you were suppose to hit them to open the character up for proper damage, otherwise they fucked you up instead. This might have only been part of a training or alternate mode but I believe the main gameplay still incorporated it but hid the bezels.

I recall it having rather large sprites with the characters being bigger than what I would have expected from most fighting games of the period.
>>
>>3793439
Street Fighter
King of Fighters
Samurai Shodown
Mortal Kombat

It basically boils down to those four. It's almost impossible to argue that any other series is as fleshed out in terms of characters/world-building/story.

If I had to pic one I'd probably go with Samurai Shodown. Almost unparalleled in terms of how much personality it has.
>>
>>3794460
I'd argue World Heroes gets into that list if simply for the absurd characters.

>>3794460
This, pretty much.

It would be hard to argue with Street Fighter being #1. But that's a tame pick, so I'll go with pic related.

Also: pour one out for Mondu's Fight Palace/Slaughter Sport, for having the worst setting, least continuity and most ridiculous characters. But the whole wagering-on-fights concept, along with other weird stuff that never appeared elsewhere, like buying drugs to use in-fights, sets it apart and could in theory have led to a much better game. The aesthetic is sort of perennially ugly, but the idea of Alien Bloodsport was (and still is) pretty imaginative.

This series does perk me up whenever anyone mentions it. I attribute that to good friends coming together in just even being willing to participate in the series (despite some being more adept at fighting games) with no pressure to excel. Everyone loves the series, and laments its disappearance. A crazy fun anime high school setting works great in a game.

It was costly to me at around $31+shipping from Japan (bought it used) ... but I did not have an Arcade Card nor the money for an actual Ginga Fukei Densetsu Sapphire. It is the only reason I got that game (no love for Galaxy Fraulien Yuna, maybe I will play those another time).

Anyway, to relate back to the thread topic. The Last Blade series just has this vibe about its environments/stages. Like a certain gravity to the moment to moment in fights at the stages. I think it may be attributed to the intros prior to matches or sometimes a bit of ambient noise before music fades in. Doesn't hurt that I enjoyed Rurouni Kenshin in '96 (which of course the author was inspired/influenced by Samurai Spirits a bit along with Marvel comics). Good seeing the SNK love here.

I always felt like SF had a big issue with establishing a "world." I know it's the "World Warrior" and all that but every place you visit just feels really disconnected from each other. The London stage is just some random vaguely British scene, there's a non military field that, there's a bathhouse and a china street and there's no sense of where any of these places even are in their respective countries.

SNK's South Town though while not mapped out really built up the idea that you where going through the same city, there's a beach a seedy bar, a bridge and Geese tower.

Rival Schools built up and established a neighborhood. All the kids went to different schools but they where all close enough by to where they could interact and you could get a feel for what was in their city beyond schools, a drive in theater a mall the construction site. PJ even went to so far as to create an actual map.

That's the kind of shit I like seeing. Keeping the scale smaller really give the player more to grab onto and gives the setting more personality than just obligatory country stereotypes. It's not super deep but you can imagine the fighters visiting these places in their off time.

You overlooked OMF2097 for grim and serious kinda story with a smidgeon of cyberpunk.

And Sango Fighter for being rooted in classical stuff. Though that could be conceived as having being handled by Samurai Showdown and Last Blade, but SanF has the specific big literature thing.

Also, Master's of Terras Kasi takes the win a bit more objectively as publicly acclaimed cool, since it did after all piggyback on an established monster franchise.
