The best /vr/ soccer game is International Superstar Soccer, but the Nintendo versions (which are discontinued today) rather than the Sony versions (which are the basis for PES today).

Not unheard of. In fact, a lot of players (if not the majority) actually don't like watching the sport themselves - as there are people who like the video games and not the real thing. There's a gap in experiencing the game from several ways and how people draw enjoyment of them, be it expectating or actually taking part of the action.

From the 3D era i can name 3 relevant games

FIFA 98-99 were a lot of fun because the licensed teams and it was easy to play. When they started with the "simulation" thing is when they went to shit and PES became the main football series.

Winning Eleven which was very innovative at the time because the amount of customization, but the lack of licenses and no western version ruined the franchise till the PS2 when it became a masterpiece as PES

And the forgotten but not less good it was Virtua Striker 2. The Arcade was awesome, but sadly since it was a dreamcast exclusive it went unkown for the most part.

Fever Pitch Soccer was my >so many hours game. You could recruit 'special players' with unique moves, like taking a dive, fireball shots, knocking an opponent out for a few seconds etc, but the best thing about it for the era was that you wouldn't usually score the same goal twice. Great game.
