Blowing up the tube was not in the demo, not even the one that plays after you beat the game once showing high level techniques.

If you went out of the Wreck Ship in the direction the game naturally points you, you come across a tube that's already broken with no other way into the bulk of Maridia. You have to figure out, "maybe I can do something to that tube."

On a related note, when my friend first played Metroid Prime, he missed the ice spreader for the exact same reason. He never played Super Metroid, I did, so I suggested dropping power bombs in the glass tubes.
