Let's have a thread about cheap Chinese repros and controllers and shit.

I bought a GB Boy Colour off Aliexpress, and I'm loving this thing so far. Aspect ratio's a little fucky but tolerable, and the backlight is a godsend. Pretty good build quality for the price, too.

What chink shit have you bought, /vr/? What did you think of it?

Bought this 143-in-1 NES multicart
Good:
>actually does have all games listed from what I've seen
>games themselves are fine, only difference I noticed was screen transition looks a little different in Zelda 1

Bad:
>battery save doesn't really work, even when doing the whole hold-reset-button as I turn it off
>>

Bought an Everdrive X7 from TaoBao. It just arrived at the warehouse and I paid $11 to ship it to US.

Was really confusing to figure out.

Nah, looks like this is his cart:

Probably the same hardware inside.
>>
>>3783978
This guy >>3784005 is correct. I don't know if it's worth the effort to request a return, since shipping it here took a month. I don't even know if the cart might be defective, or if they all have this problem.
>>
>>3783973
I'm glad you got it figured out. I remember you from the last thread. Make sure you have batteries for it so you can use it when it arrives. Not sure if the warehouse will remove those like the agent I always use does.
>>
>>3783973
Make sure you get CR1220 batteries. I got my X7 a few weeks ago, been playing my Genesis a lot now. You're going to love it anon.
>>
>>3784071
I bought some myself after reading the last thread even though I didn't order the X7 yet. Unfortunately it will probably be a couple months before I can afford one now.

Aliexpress is a godsend for games that are mainly ridiculously overpriced, but still want the thrill of playing on the original system.

Got both of these for less than $20 with shipping. No issues with saving on Chrono either.

I bought my GPD XD from AliExpress. Arrived well within three weeks.

Recently been looking at the Snail W3D and wondering if it's worth bothering with.
>>
>>3784754
Why not go for the GPD WIN?
>>
>>3784762
The only thing I don't like about the XD is where the sticks/d-pad and buttons are placed. The d-pad is a little too far in from the edge to be comfortable for very long, so the corner of the thing digs into the palm of your hand when you're playing.

The GPD WIN would have basically the same problem, but probably worse because there's a full keyboard in the middle, and the sticks are closer to the hinge between screens.

Besides which, the W3D is also a phone and ever since the Xperia Play, I've been thinking "Man, a modern phone with physical controls on that runs everything up to the PS1 would be really sweet".

Only thing I'm worried about is battery life.

If you get this plus a 60-to-72 pin adapter it should work on an NES.

Works well.
>>
An American Genesis power supply will work on a Super Famicom?
>>
>>3785307

CIC 6102. The lockout chip, otherwise I would have to put a cartridge on the top to run the damn thing. There are holes in the PCB for it
>>
>>3785309
Never buy chink power adapters. I'm sorry, but it's just too risky. They're often the wrong voltage and will damage the system over time.

You should get a real power adapter for any console you own.
>>
>>3785317

>American Genesis Power Supply
>Never buy chink power adapters

Good advice, but...you wot m8

>>3785309

A genesis model 1 power supply will work on a famicom. I'm not sure about a super famicom. Just to be sure check the polarity of the tip and the output DC voltage
>>

I've literally got a stack of over 30 Sega CD games. But most of the require a ram cart. I started a game of Shining Force so now I can't even play Road Rash or any other RPG.
Will be selling this model 1 with the knock off to make up half the cost.

Been loving Shadowrun so far though. I had only played the SNES version (which I think is just as great).

Finally got my 150 in 1 in after a month. It's got everything I wanted except Metroid, no biggie.

The SMB3 is weird though. I knew about the JP version difference where getting hit with a powerup always takes you to small mario (instead of super mario), but stars work differently too. Any invincibility star always lasts for the rest of the stage, instead of ~10 seconds. This makes stars in your inventory really powerful. But a side effect is super (big) mario always flips when he has a star, instead of jumping normally. You cannot enter ceiling pipes while flipping- you have to suicide and go again as small mario or just avoid the stage's star.

I can't find this listed on TCRF or anything. Is that in the JP version, or did the chinese put a romhack on the cart instead of an official version? If it's the latter, I wonder what other changes there are and what other games on the cart are romhacks.
>>
>>3785471
the Chinese just aren't careful about which ROMs they use.

I think Kirby's Adventure on that same cart is the PAL version because it obviously runs too fast.
>>
>>3785481
Well, you get what you pay for, I went this route instead of a proper flash cart. I'm impressed that a PAL version runs at all, or works with 60hz televisions. When I play some PAL gamecube games on a Wii, I get that rolling screen effect or "unusable signal." I guess that's really apples and oranges, though.
>>
Anyone bought genesis controller? Are they reliable? The b button of my official controller isn't what it used to be.
>>
>>3785564
Chinese controllers are functional, but they're insanely cheaply made (obviously). You're better off buying replacement pads and refurbing your original controller.
>>
>>3785481
How hard would it be to stick your own roms on there?
>>
>>3785676
You can request certain sellers to build them for you with (almost) any ROMs you want.

Is your Contra HC the english NTSC version?

I've taken to playing a romhack to restore the JP difficulty but keep the english text. The retail USA game is definitely the hardest 2D contra imo.
>>
Any luck with N64 bootlegs?
There are like 10 or so games that I'd like to own that are a bitch to emulate elsewhere, and I want to give a reason to use my own N64 anyways.
>>
>>3785830
I've heard they're very good quality, but they're $25 USD each which is crazy. You can get an ED64 for the price of 3 of those:

>>
Where can I buy a cheap Chinese EverDrive N8?
>>
>>3784651
No, it doesn't hold on to saves at all. I tested with saving on just Zelda 1, then Earthbound, and they'd be lost after a few resets at the most.
>>

So I got a cheap chink nes pad, funny enough I paid 5 bucks to get it from murica, so it came to me in a couple days.
To say its crappy at first, is no duh, but I have done stuff to it wjere it is quite ok, maybe even good now! I taped 2 nickles to the inside backing to give it some weight, taped a piece of plastic on the part that holds the a and buttons, since the pcb board is held by only one screw. And I made an X with electrical tape where the dpad goes on the pad, so it doesnt hit diagonals by accident.

Now I can play ninja gaiden and jump off walls with ease :D
>>
>>3788038
Oh shit, I got a cheap retrobit SNES controller at MicroCenter on clearance that is unusable due to diagonal bullshit, that's a brilliant idea. Gives me something to do this evening while awaiting the snowpacalypse, thank you.
>>
>>3784012
You can probably just stick a new battery in it, tbhfamicom.
>>
What would be the best route of obtaining a Super Famicom flash cart lads? I've heard that Mega Drive carts require new batteries, does that also apply to the SuFam?
>>
>>3788223
Probably not, they all save to the SD card, I don't know why they would need batteries. You can get chinese Super EDs on Amazon from 3rd party sellers sometimes. Otherwise just message sellers on AliExpress directly asking if they have them.
>>
>>3788223

Select "S N E S" from the Color options. I got mine from there and it works like a charm. Just don't update the firmware, because it could brick the device - the firmware it comes with can run almost everything, except games that use expansion chips.

>>3792070
>>3793267
I don't know about where you live, but when I try to buy, they offer me plenty of options where you don't need a credit card.
>>3794620
Well, I never had a problem with them, but some people apparently had. So you better make sure you have a card from a company that will back you up in case something goes wrong.
As for shipping, the sellers usually ship in the next day or so. But unless you decide to pay for a UPS shipping (expensive as hell) you have to order it and kind of forget about it.
It takes a long long time for things to arrive because that's how they make the shipping cheap. Also it's why aliexpress usually gives you a 90 day buyer protection. They know it takes a lot of time. So if you order something, don't worry. It will eventually make it there.

Just make sure you buy from sellers who have a good reputation, just like ebay.

If the game uses an EEPROM to save these carts don't have the EEPROM chip in them. So you'll either need to be prepared to not save, solder the EEPROM in yourself, or only purchase games that use SRAM or controller pak saving.
>>
>>3784636
do all genesis repros look this terrible?
>>
>>3795531
Thats whats keepin me from uying any, Pulseman and the flintstones one is the only decent looking ones.
I don't get it, how hard is it to reproduce the actual cart label? Surely most have pics/scanes online.
>>
>>3795540
Then why don't you reproduce it and replace the ugly one?
Not trying to be a dick. Just saying that it's not really that hard, you could do it without much trouble if it bothers you.
>>
>>3795497
some people are reporting (in that very thread) that their carts have SRAM, so YMMV.

best to ask the seller, if it's anything like SNES, they can add SRAM for an extra $5.
>>
>>3795137
>>3794620
they use their own, very legitimate processing service (Alipay)

Aliexpress is owned by Alibaba, a publicly-traded company (NYSE:BABA), and in the worst case, your card has fraud protection, stop being an autist and shit or get off the pot.
>>
>>3795618
Right, but those games had SRAM in the first place. OOT uses SRAM so I'm guessing that the Master Quest ROM kept treating save data in the same way.
>>
>>3783965
Just bought one of this, it would be really shitty if it keeps losing the save, I bought it for the sole purpose to play mother 1. Is this information actually acurrate? Any one here with this problem either?
>>
>>3795831
why are you buying this trash? spend another $40 and get a flash cart. all games with working saves.
>>
>>3795831
Open it up when you get it and make sure it actually has a battery. if it doesn't, you'll need to add your own. Also these carts can only keep one save at a time so don't load up any other game besides Mother if you want to keep your save.
>>
>>3796095
thats understandable, I fix computers,I've tons of batteries ,second question, my NES has the god damm CIC lockout chip, does it will work w ork do I have to disable the chip?
>>
>>3796103

If your nes is constantly resetting, yes, you would have to disable it. Try it first; if not, do the mod.
>>
>>3791936

I'll probably get one in a couple weeks. Is it really that good?
>>
>>3797289
Yes, as far as I know it plays everything. The only drawback is that you have to hit the reset button on the N64 to write the save data to the SD card. If you turn it off without pressing reset, you'll lose your progress for that session.
>>
>>3797294

Is that using the save feature for the games or a save state function of the drive?
>>

I thought this would be the canceled Resident Evil prototype that leaked. Instead, I ended up with Resident Evil Gaiden. Gaiden is likely the better game but I wanted the prototype on cartridge.
>>
>>3797313
It's the save feature in the games, the ED64 doesn't have a save state function as far as I know.

The ED64 only holds save data in memory when the console is on. Pressing reset copies that data to the SD card - that's why it's required. The next time you play that game, it'll load the save file off the SD card.

It kind of sucks, but the official Everdrive 64 v2.5 works the same way.
>>
>>3797340

That doesn't sound too bad at all. Long as there's no extra step when you play that game again. Sounds simple enough to me.

And that was actually my next question. I was wondering if the official one performed any better or worse. Will probably grab one next payday. Thanks anon.
>>
>>3795831
>>3796095
>>3783965 here, I just replaced the battery and it didn't seem to do anything. Contacted the seller, who said that it can only hold one save at a time, and apparently playing any game with SRAM use will also erase the save. Have yet to test this out.
>>
>>3797317
Weird, I ordered the green one and got the prototype, I wanted the red one with the MVC Jill art but it was out of stock
I didn't get that one because I don't live in Europe and therefore think PAL style carts are ugly
>>
>>3797804
PAL style carts???
do you mean the transparent GBC carts vs the original GB carts? IIRC, they dont have 'region' specific cart designs

Is it the one on the top left that you're talking about being the prototype and was it from Xingqi Retro Store?
>>
I've got that 150 in 1 cart for the NES that has battery saving for Kirby's Adventure. After spending a few months with it I can say that it wasn't really worth the money. A handful of games are in PAL format and don't run at correct speeds. Kickmaster and a few other games have graphical glitches. Mega Man 1 will reset randomly while trying to play through the game. Adventure Island 1 has infinite lives for some reason. SMB3 has some cheats enabled... The list goes on. I wonder if that 143 in 1 cart with battery saving is any better than this shitty one.
>>
>>3795531
for the most part, but at $3 is there really a point in complaining if the game works?
>>
When is China gonna start making bootleg N64 and PSOne consoles?
>>
>>3798519

Ha. You may be onto something here...
>>
>>3797804
>PAL style carts
For Game Boy? What are you talking about? GB carts look the same in all regions.
>>
>>3798519
PS1 clones could potentially happen, but N64?

Emulator developers still haven't fully figured out how the N64 works, especially the custom RCP chip. Maybe in 20 years we'll start seeing N64 clones, but not now.
>>
>>3798590

In 20 years it'll be even more irrelevant, and most of the people on this board will be in hospice care, a retirement home or dead.

I'd still buy one though
>>
>>3799842
Whoa easy there.
In 20 years I'll be fifty something.
I'll still be enjoying them games.
>>
>>3798590
in 20 years you will have FPGA machines that play everything from atari 2600 to 3dfx PC games

My TaoBao order just came in today. Way faster than I was expecting.

I got a battery but I still need a small micro SD card. Is there anything I need to do before putting a memory card in?
>>
>>3801247
Did it not come with one? You'll want to load it up with ROMs, organized in folders a few letters at a time. Don't put any firmware on there cause it will brick it if it's a clone, which it sounds like it is.
>>
>>3795831
>>3796034

Why do you want this or a flashcart when you can just play all of that and more (with saves) on a Wii?
>>
>>3801254
It was supposed to be official, it didn't come with any SD card from what I can tell.

Will any class type SD card work? 4GB seems the smallest most stores carry
>>
>>3801272

Any sd card will work. Make sure to set allocation size to 32kb or whatever the max is when formatting
>>
I'm kinda interested to buy one of these full shells for the original Gameboy to unfuck my still working, but scratched to shit, childhood Gameboy.
Has anyone here ever bought one of those before? Are they gud?
>>
>>3801276
I bought a GBA shell recently and it was pretty decent. Not quite as nice as a real one, but it was like $7.
>>
>>3795119
just save your money and buy a flashcart... literally no difference. paying for a repro is throwing away money.

if you want a cart to hang on a wall, put a sticker over a copy of NBA live 97 or some shit and be done with it.
>>
>>3801335

>NBA Live 97

I wonder if there are people who actually like these shitty games
>>
>>3792295
I just got a similar one and it has a few issues. All the games do seem to work and save, but in a couple of games (Castlevania:HoD, Pokemon FireRed, Mother 1) when you save, one of the sound channels drops out and doesn't come back until you turn the GBA off and on again. And of course the real time clock doesn't work in the other Pokemon games.
>>
>>3788038
>And I made an X with electrical tape where the dpad goes on the pad
What? I don't get it, and I need to fix mine as well
>>
>>3803240
I think the idea is that the tape prevents the pad from accidentally triggering more contact points than you want it to by gapping it out.
>>
>>3791565
Mine stopped working after only 3 or 4 uses, it may have just been my cart, it was the newer one without the cart on top if it.
>>
>>3803625

I have the old one. Works like a charm...sorry for the loss. Have you tried figuring out what's wrong with it?
>>
>>3791936

I still have the old firmware. Let me know if you want it uploaded.
>>
>>3801276
If it's made if ABS plastic, it's no different than the real thing.
>>
>>3803953
>trusting shady CNs to injection mold with any quality control whatsoever and use plastic stock which isn't full of highly toxic leeching substances.

Not even once
>>
>>3803625
Shit, really? That's the one I have.

Did it just stop turning on one day?
>>
>>3803386
Bingo, it hardly presses diagonals now when I press right or left. The best example like I said was ninja gaiden, before when tryin to wall jump back and forth quickly, he wouldn't leave the wall probably because instead of just right, it was registering right and up or right and down. Now he can wall jump with ease.
Funny is I got the buffalo famicom controller so I kinda stopped using it, but did just use it last night and quite surprised how fuckin decent I got it to be.
>>
Alright /vr/, I've been redpilled into repros given the prices on AliExpress. I have to ask about the quality. Does everything work correctly? At 3 bucks a pop, I'm not too afraid of ordering a shit load of Genesis games I missed out on, but does saving and whatnot all work correctly? I'm not gonna try to pick it up again in a couple years and have it not working?
>>
>>3805738
They work, they're worth $3. The batteries are all new, and you can replace them if you need to, they usually save better than a vintage copy, unless there was a manufacturing defect. They can occasionally burn out if you leave one on for like 36 hours straight, but I've only heard reports of that, never experienced it.
>>
how do you guys buy the actual systems? All the chineese ones are probably crap right
>>
>>3805749

Have you had any burn out on you at all?

Luckily only a couple games I want even have save functions. Hadn't thought of that.
>>
>>3805760
Chinese consoles are all SOAC clones, Famiclones are decent, SuFami clones are great, Genesis clones I have no experience with.
>>3805762
I've only bought Famicom bootlegs, but I've never had one burn out. I've just heard like 2 people on /vr/ mention it so I thought I'd put it in there.
>>
>>3805771
Any chance i could get links or something, the used consoles on ebay are pretty expensive and im guessing if i bought the wrong chineese stuff it would break

Should i get a Saturn or a Genesis controller? I remember playing with one of them when I was younger and how good it was, but I don't remember which one of them I was using.
>>
>>3792067
You mean your mom canceled her supplementary card because you were using it to buy Chinese toys instead of food? Or you're just telling porkie pies?
>>
>>3805773
What console do you want a clone of? Honestly it's cheaper and easier to get most console clones in the US (or wherever you are). Since they aren't illegal anymore they can be purchased anywhere. Yobo makes good stuff in my experience, and Gamerz Tek is decent too. Amazon has a lot of clone consoles available, if that's what you're in the market for. It's also worth considering Japanese consoles if you're looking for a SNES, SuFamis are way cheaper than their American counterparts.
>>
>>3784636

How much was that Centy? The super cheap ones don't have a save function it looks like.
>>
Now that AliExpress seems to have removed most Famicom bootlegs, where can I buy custom Famicom carts now?
>>
>>3806221
Huh? https://www.aliexpress.com/wholesale?catId=0&initiative_id=SB_20170217144433&SearchText=8bit+game+card

You can still get them on AE, and there's a bunch of sellers that will make custom carts for you.
>>
>>3806240
I can't find anyone who can make custom carts with the casing that has the lines on top. Just those with a bunch of dots, which are pretty brittle compared to the other ones.
>>
>>3805774
dont get them on aliexpress
unless you mean an adapter in that case saturn
>>
>>3806253
You really can't get picky about the cases of bootleg famicom carts, tbqhfamicom
>>
>>3787674

>>
>>3807912

Genesis power adapter will work on a Japanese SuFami, Famicom, NES and Genesis/Megadrive etc. They have an internal voltage regulator (LM7805) that generates 5v internally. If the polarity is right you can use anything up to 30v but higher voltage generates more heat and might burn out the 7805 faster, realistically you shouldn't use anything over 12v. The NES is designed for an AC not DC adapter so the polarity doesn't matter.
>>
>>3808457
Actually it has two regulators.
>>
>>3797882
>>3798539
Not region-specific cart designs, region specific label designs you dinguses, look at the label, the round seal and the "CE" are the PAL style, whereas oval seal and ESRB logo are NTSC style

hey
Just got this snes clone for literal pocket change, and it's pretty good, runs all the games I've tried. The thing is, while playing A Link The Past, it slowed down a bit at the second boss (multiple large sprites on screen). What I'm concerned about is, how can I find out if this is an emubox or a hardware clone? I've found little to no info on this on the internets. Can lag occur rarely on actual snes hardware, too? (last time I played on a real one was ten years ago) I would really appreciate your help.

All you need to know is that there's like 3 emulator boxes on the market and the VAST majority of clones, by hundreds of thousands of units are SOACs or other types of hardware clones. Emulator clones are worse, and typically much, much more expensive.
