calling games collectathons is a really tired meme
>>3783015
look up pannenkoek2012 on YouTube he's gotten the entire game down to only 30-something A presses
>>3783034
Full or half-presses?
>>3783035
>half-presses
>>3783009
This is why SM64 is such an amazing game.
It lets the player personally reflect on what to do. How do you -know- you're supposed to jump into the painting? The game answers countless questions like this throughout. Do many players even realize you can complete with game with half A presses? I bet a lot of people completed the game without even realizing you could breakdance. This is just a few of the countless examples of how life changing this game is.
>can complete most of the levels without firing
>first person shooter
>Can shitpost /vr/ without getting a (you)
>Bait thread
>objective is to collect gems
>most are just lying on the ground
wat
Obviously bullshit. Op retarded or troll.

New pasta?
I played nearly all the platformers ever and I refuse to play this game

Why?

Calling something a collectathon isn't derogatory.

Is there a video of this?
>>3783396
What's another term for a video game?
Waste of time.
>>3783413
No that's what you call a League match when you start losing because you're a little bitch.
>>3783419
What's another term for a human being?
Waste of resources.
But what kind of animal would play this game without jumping?
Even so there's barely any stages where the danger of falling into a bottomless pit isn't an ever present threat, so it's still a platformer.
>>3783396
Mario isn't a collectathon, though. There are times when you have to win a race or beat a boss, then you are rewarded a star. Calling it a collectathon is very over simplifying the term and the word loses meaning.
>>3783642
Mario 64 literally invented collectathons.

Banjo kazooie was a collectathon. Smb 64 was not. I 100% both games and can honestly say I hate BK because of it.
>>3783658
Nah that was Banjo Kazooie.
Still a decent game too.
He uses other buttons that can gain him height so he can platform even if he avoids using the jump button.
A ¼ A-press may be accomplished by starting the game while holding down the A button. This way, the initial A-button depression does not count since it was initiated prior to the inception of the game itself. When one releases this A-button, one has completed the cycle and performed a ¼ A-press.

Banjo Kazooie isn't a collectathon though, it's an action adventure game with platforming elements.

DEEPEST LORE
>>3783009
Most platforms in real life can be reached without jumping.
I hate to break it to you but Mario 64 IS a collectathon. If a skilled player could 100% all the levels playing them thru one time each then you could call it not a collectathon.
>playing thru the same levels 6 times to do extremely similar tasks
>not a collectathon
>its ok when mario does it
>>3784335
I think /vr/ is trying to change the meaning of collectathon because they don't want the label applied to their beloved Mario64 for some reason.
Collectathon is and has always been understood to refer to Mario64 and all of its derivatives during the 5th and possibly 6th gen.
>It's not a collectathon because you don't collect THAT much!
I think it's ridiculous.
>>3784340
There's nothing even remotely close to DK64 bananas in Mario 64. The red coin challenges are more about acrobatics than anything else. They don't just line them up for you to walk over like you're a god damned Roomba.
>>3784352
I don't give a shit dude, I didn't invent the term "collectathon", that's just what it is.
You're gonna have to come up with another term that encompasses DK64 and excludes Mario64, something like "collect-things-except-they're-not-mandatory-to-finish-the-game-athon" or "collect-things-except-they're-a-lot-more-and-require-less-skill-to-collect-athon".

>There's nothing even remotely close to DK64 bananas in Mario 64.
Except you know, the normal coins. The things strewn all over the levels and that explode from every enemy that you need to collect 100 of to get an extra collectable for collecting collectables.
>>3784550
People like to collect things, even non-existent virtual avatars that only vaguely resemble the things they are intended to represent. Just look at us here, collecting systems and games.
It's addiction by design.

>>3783240
we have to talk about parallel universes? and if you thought my other tangents were complicated...
>>3784550
You hardly meticulously dig up every single coin though, each stage typically has around 140 coins with Jolly Roger Bay and Dire Dire Docks having just over 100.
>>3783642
>There are times when you have to win a race or beat a boss, then you are rewarded a star.
Complexity has nothing to do with the overall progress structure of the game.
In Super Mario 64 you
>Collect collectables to advance throughout the game
>Have the option of progressing semi-dynamically, you have a great deal of variety in how you can go about collecting things, and have choice in the order you collect them
This structure which Super Mario 64 invented is what defines a collectathon. It's true games like B&K took this to a logical extreme, but it doesn't make SM64 any less of a collectathon.
>>3786810
I'm disgusted to even like the same game you're defending.
Why are you guys talking as if collectathons were inherently bad? Sure they can be extremely boring timesinks, but they can also be really well executed like Mario games or Jak & Daxter for example.
