Thread for the recommendation of PS1 games, specially hidden gems (we can all google the 25 "best" games)

I'm having a hard time finding good stuff to play outside of the most known franchises (specially because I'm not into JRPGs)

Have fun and please no stupid console wars
>>
>>3779598
Anon, as strange as it sounds, why don't you like JRPGs?
>>
>>3779598
Cardynal Syn is like the perfect experimental fighting game right next to BIO FREAKS. The characters pop out and while the mechanics may be iffy for picky players, I certainly had a fuck ton of fun with them. I'd also like to recommend Slap Happy Rhythm Busters just for the music and simplistic mechanics.

Klonoa is a pretty good platformer. I dunno if it's top 25 list.

Elemental Gearbolt is really fun. A light gun game with some RPG elements. I just finished it with a dual shock and had a blast, felt like playing a shmup which I like a lot. Hard as fuck with the controller though.
>>
>>3779598
Ape Escape. idk if that's too "mainstream" for you.
>>
>>3779598
Is Bust A Move 2 Arcade Edition a top 25er that everyone already loves? Because that's my vote
>>
>>3779614
>too mainstream

that's probably in my top three games ever if that's mainstream then mainstream me up senpai.

Thanks for the good memories
>>
>>3779605
The gameplay mechanics bore me, I don't like telling the character what to do and watch him do it, I like to take action myself in real time.

>>3779609

Are they fun in singleplayer? Usually fighting games in sp don't keep my interest for too long, but they seem to be worth of giving a shot.

>>3779612
>Klonoa

I think I saw it on the top 25 list, didn't call my attention because I don't like too much when the game's theme is too goofy, I might try it.

>>3779612
>Elemental Gearbolt

I love this type of games! Definitely getting it.

>>3779614
Is not about not being mainstream, its just that it already is on every top 25 ps1 games, and I already got the ones that called my attention from there.

We can freely discuss them anyway, I haven't played it.

>>3779624
No idea, looks ok
>>
>>3779624
I like all of the Bust-A-Move/Puzzle Bobble games.
>>
>>3779636
well, to be honest I also only play fighting games with other people. Only time I play alone is when a game is weird mechnics wise and I want to give it another chance I'll pop into training mode or dummy the second player when there is no training mode.
>>
>>3779598
Monster Rancher is great
>>
Bushido Blade, just a nostalgia trip at least for me. Has pretty decent combat the sound effects are classic not much music from what I remember though which actually works in this games favor.
>>
>>3779598
Bushido Blade 2
Tenchu
Tobal 2
Armored Core
Bloody Roar
Libero Grande
Driver
Versailles
GTA
Micro Machines V3

Threads of Fate
Sanvein
Those are the only two that I've owned that I would consider "not mainstream" but also "very good"
My playstation collection is only 40ish games though so what the fuck do I know
Threads is my second favorite game and while it's made by square enix it's actually an action/character action/beatemup sort of game with a top notch story.
Sanvein is a neat arcadey shooter that has a really nice aesthetic. It has some pretty significant framerate dips but if you can look past that the game is solid.
I would also recommend silhouette mirage but from what I'm told there's a much better version on the Saturn that also fixes the fact that the game is painfully easy on playstation.

>The gameplay mechanics bore me, I don't like telling the character what to do and watch him do it, I like to take action myself in real time.

Have you tried Parasite Eve yet?

It's a fantastic Action RPG, where you actually have to move, attack, and dodge stuff, and not just sit there and select commands.

You might want to try Star Ocean 2 as well. Great combat in that game.
>>
>>3779598
>looking for ps1 games
>no jrpgs
That's all the PS1 really had, though.

Try Threads of Fate. It's an action platformer with RPG elements. Made by Squaresoft so it has the fifth gen quality.
>>
do you like horror games?
because you've got:
parasite eve
parasite eve 2
koudelka
fear effect
fear effect 2
overblood
sort of overblood 2(jp and pal only though)
chaos break(pal and jp only though)
dino crisis
dino crisis 2
resident evil 1, 2, 3, and survivor
martian gothic
galerians
city of lost children
I believe D is on PS1
the clock tower games
nightmare creatures games were good from what I hear
silent hill
soul of the samurai
and countdown vampires

I would also recommend symphony of the night and TRAG
>>
>>3779598

Rising Zan Samurai gunman

You're a cowboy samurai that fights ninjas in the old west and everything in the game is aware of how dumb yet awesome that it is

Also, MediEvil. Halloween themed action/platformer that's very good. Camera can get clunky though. Insane amounts of charm if whimsical spooky stuff is your thing
>>
>>3779598
Nectaris, Langrissers, Front Missions, Kartia, Vandal Hearts.
>>
>>3779598
Gran Turismos and Driver.
>>
>>3780482
Not really, the PS1 versions are harder in bad ways. The framerate is variable and doesn't hold 30 fps all the time which actually affects the driving and possibly the game speed I believe. The handling model also fights hard, feels heavier, turning ardius feels lower, that combined with 2 tickets max and you get sent to jail. PC versions have the godly PC menus, cockpit views and 360 showcase panoramas where as the console versions don't. Honestly the only plus side I can think of is having a R34 Skyline in the NTSC-J version of High Stakes. I played High Stakes late into my adulthood on PS1 first then PC so my judgement on these two versions are pretty fair.
>>
70s Robot Anime Geppy-X
>>
>>3779598
Alundra - In Britain it's a hidden gem, not sure about US though
Alundra 2 - Bad sequel but a good game in its own right
Crash Bandicoot series - memes aside they are fun games
Driver - Very fun driving game, give Driver 2 a go if you enjoy 1
Fear Effect 1 and 2 - Very good to play, just make sure all 4 discs per game are good before you dive into it
Metal Gear Solid - Obligatory
Rayman 1 and 2 - Again, obligatory
Tomb Raider series - These will take a lot of time to get through if you haven't played them before
Wipeout series - Great Sci-Fi racers
>>
>>3780482
The PS1 versions of 3 and HS are actually better than the PC in some ways.

>>
>>3779598

Vanark is pretty neat. It's a hybrid of Starfox with little Resident Evil style segments between missions. Trap Gunner is one of the best 2-player games on the system, and Kensei: Sacred Fist is an unfairly overlooked Tekken clone with some great characters in it.
>>
>>3781362
And just a little sample from this discussion

>I love both versions, but the PS1 version striked me as having the same tracks but with much more background detail than the PC version, smarter cops that were actually a challenge to avoid even though there is no radio chatter, the game was actually hard to beat with more enjoyable Tournaments and Knockouts (not freaking easy to beat the Al like those on the PC version), the most awesome engine steering system ever on the PS1 since the steering on the PC was a bit off (so, this game has the best controlling/steering out of all racing games on PS1), more options than the PC version like being able to drive the Mercedes CLK-GTR on Hot Pursuit mode with you being allowed to choose how much traffic you want on the race (unlike the PC version), arcade and simulation mode which the PC version did not have and of course, the Elnino, which sucked on the PC version, but is one speedy roadrunner with perfect everything on the PS version.
>>
>>3779598
>Tenchu
A bit frustrating but definitely interesting 3d stealth game, can be difficult and clunky but rewarding if you get good in it.
>Digimon World 1
Adventure and exploration with a tamagotchi like element. Maybe too much of a jrpg for you, though.
>Soul Reaver
Ambitious 3d action adventure with a big world, lots of style and a great atmosphere.
Resident Evil games
>survival horror, tank controls, yadda yadda. If you can't handle them you're just dumb.
>Metal Gear Solid
Some dorks spew bullshit of it being overrated but it's a meme, you dip. One of the best games on the system - if you don't include jrpgs it's most likely the best. Play it.
>>
>devils dice
fun, simple puzzle game with cute sound effects/mascot
>monkey hero
a very underated zelda like adventure game, takes place in a big open world. lots of different enemes/characters/places. great soundtrack.
so worth playing.
>small soldiers
good adventure/third person shooter. fantastic soundtrack. (based on the movie obv)
>c-12 final resistance
third person shooter, decent graphics for ther time, all round fun game blasting aliens with lasers
>alien trilogy
(probs the most popular/commonly rated game on my list).
doom + alien = alien trilogy.
awesome game with a great creepy atmosphere.
>doom/doom 2/ final doom
dare i say, the best ports of doom?
>>
>>3781406
I instantly hated almost all these "big budget, mature 3D action games for Western adults" that began to appear on PSX.

I hated Tomb Raider. I hated Metal Gear Solid. I hated Soul Reaver. I didn't hate Resident Evil but didn't replay it 25 times either.

For me all these games were the funeral of everything I liked in retro games. They felt like meh action movies and not like funny gaming. Hence, I stopped playing video games shortly after, when the PS2 appeared and games took more and more this abhorrent direction.

I quite liked Tenchu though
>>
>>3781525
I loved Tenchu back in the day, but I think it aged worse than all of those games.
>>
>>3781525
the only thing mature about tomb raider is lara croft's breasts.
>>
Anyone recommending Driver is lying. It sucks shit. To start the game you have to pass this ridiculous time trial shit that I don't have the patience for. Why would they expect you to be that good at the game off the bat, much less make it manditory? Fuck it
>>
>>3781581
>everything isn't handed to me on a platter so it sucks

Git gud.
>>
>>3780546
Even though I don't like pure RPGs, I do like Action RPGs, or games in general that have RPG elements, I got this one on my list of games to play.

>>3780636
Yes! Many thanks, I'll check this list up.

>>3781362
>>3781374
Interesting, the PC versions can get a little bit monotonous (specially the career mode of High Stakes)
>>
>>3781601
I would if there was a way to practice that shit besides retrying over and over.
>>
>>3781636

that's what practice is you baby
>>
>ctrl+f Tomba
>ctrl+f Tombi

It's Tombi in Europe, but Tomba! is a great 2.5d platformer
>>
>>3781636
Lmao. You're in your teens or early 20s, aren't you?
>>
>>3781671
Just turned 30, but I never had a ps1 growing up nor the patience for the brick wall style difficulty curve.
>>
>>3781675
When you paid $60 for a game, you wanted it to show decent difficulty. Instant gratification = waste of your money. Also, you mastered your games because you didn't own many games in the first place.

>but what if you pirated games hurrr
You did not download a library of 800 ROMs on the Internet and try 15 minutes before giving up. You had to find a source for each game, negotiate with the owner (a process that could last days, weeks, or even months for rare games), copy the discs one by one, hope that it would burn correctly (otherwise you spend $2 for nothing) on the CD-R you bought at the store, test the game, etc. It was a slow process. Even pirated games had a value. So you didn't do all this just to give up at the first stage because "it's hard".
>>
>>3781601
No. I don't want to play a shit game
>>
>>3781732

The best part was that the entire game's levels fit into RAM, so you could boot the game up and swap the disc for whatever audio CD you wanted to shoot bugs to.
