But yeah, I don't think the west produced any ARPGs for the PS1, it was primarily a jap console.
I tried playing this the other day. Why is ot an ARPG? It's more like a platform game, horizontal scroller, adding skills and a cute/funny plot.
Any ither obscure recommendations for PSX?

Because you gained exp and developed character stats along with weapon upgrades that calculate battle damage
Hence Action-RPG.
Although, the natural progression made the RPG elements barely noticeable. It might as well have been solely an Action game with fixed hit counts.
The Magic and Shape-shifting abilities would have made it a great Adventure game. But the only time Adventure mechanics were required to progress was in their individual levels: The Jungle and Ghost Temple. Not a significant portion to market it as such.
