The only 'hard' part is Welcome to the Machine.

Git gud.
>>
>>3777553
I'd say its about mid range difficulty for a genesis game.

>Ecco's creator, Ed Annunziata, pushed for the rights to develop another Ecco game and continue the story with a new game on either the Sega 32X or the Sega Saturn. Over the years, Sega has repeatedly turned down these requests to allow Annunziata to continue the story, despite being pitched as recently as 2013, nearly 20 years after The Tides of Time was released. Although a sequel was never developed, Ed has shared some details about what would have happened in the third game.

This jump is probably the hardest thing in the game. I still haven't even found a youtube video of someone doing it. Everyone takes the shortcut to avoid it.

Can you not read? That's what I'm talking about. Everyone now just seems to use the shortcut to bypass it. Super lame.
>>
>>3782912
For some reason I think that's the intended way and that the jump is just a red herring that happens to be doable.
>>
>>3782919
Huh I never thought of it that way. I originally played it in the pre internet days and never thought to look for another route so I just tried the jump till I figured it out. I look at the shortcut at cheating. Almost might as well just teleport at that point.
>>
>>3782946
That was sarcasm, dipshit.

This is sort of how I feel about this. I (nor anybody I knew) never thought of using up and down because it's actually doable by timing your jumps right. I always tried to do it the jumping way but the few times I managed to get past the timer was up to 9:00 and I'd get a time over.
>>
>>3784971
The difference is that part in Ecco doesn't expect you to do anything fundamentally different than you've been doing. It's just a test of your timing and skill with the jumping mechanics. The thing in Sonic is a new mechanic that gets thrown at you without indication that's what's happening.
>>
>>3784974
How the fuck are you supposed to do it then?
>>
>>3779541
Proof that modern day Sega is fucking stupid
>>
>>3782024
There is a secret vent bypasing it?
WHERE?
When I was playing it I spent SO MUCH TIME
trying to learn exactly HOW to do those jumps that its not even funny.
>>
>>3785349
Fuck knows. Either somehow get it by jumping or have really good eyesight and just happen to press up or down.

There was a guy who said that it was "explained in the manual", and when I called him out his bullshit he hurled the goalpost clear across the field and said it was in the Japanese manual which I also beat him on.

Seems I misremembered, I called him out and he claimed it was a Japanese manual despite it being the US and JP manual side by side.

You'll notice when you jump with Ecco that they're not static, like in some platformers if you hold left or right you can make him drift a little. That's basically the trick to the jump.

Start far on the left side of the corridor and swim as fast as possible then press right so you jump out of the water at an angle and immediately switch to left so he drifts a little and doesn't hit the corner. Once you know what you're doing it's not that bad, but you need to jump at the last possible moment and drift right away otherwise it's impossible.

Like I say back when I was first playing the game I had no idea there was a shortcut so it was just a fuckload of trial and error. Part of me thinks I should work out whatever bullshit I'd need to to stick it up on youtube just so people know it's possible.
>>
>>3781124
>people found this maneuver hard
it was a pretty basic test that you were actually paying attention to the mechanics instead of fagging along the whole time
I would not even call it the fourth hardest part
never have I even thought a shortcut would be necessary at that point let alone looked for one
>>

That's something I appreciated a lot about Nintendo, compared to Sega (I had all the consoles): Nintendo had a free hotline in my country, where you could call anytime and get reliable answers from competent adults any time you were stuck in any game.

In the 90s era where you had absolutely no way to know stuff because no Internet, that added incredible value to Nintendo games. For example, it saved me more than once in the toughest Mario levels.

With Sega games, when you were stuck somewhere... you were left alone with your problem.
>>
>>3787543

That might explain why SNES owners tend to be bad at games or prefer easy genres like RPGs.
>>
>>3787543
This guy could be right >>3787558

Like with a lot of games, having to figure out how to beat Ecco on my own in the end made me both really good and love the game even more.
>>
>>3787569
Yeah, but how many childhoods got ruined by that barrel in Sonic 3?
>>
>>3787689
Come on anon, you don't really believe that meme do you?
>>
>>3787689
The hang glider in Sonic 2 SMS was worse for me. I still cannot get past the 2nd level with the glider but I can pass the barrel now.
>>
>>3788134
>hang glider in Sonic 2 SMS

>>
I beat it late last year and it was the most satisfying thing I've done in my life

Then I destroyed Tides of Time in like three days
>>
>>3777561

The only reason The Machine is harder than the Tube is because you have to beat the Queen in the same go or go back to the start.

>>3777626

I've got a pretty sizable Genesis library and outside of a few SHMUPs I can't think of anything harder. Maybe Chakan, I guess.

>>3777691

I would kill a man for Ecco Mania

>>3781124

I didn't know about the shortcut but I admit it took me a while, not as long as the Machine + Queen did though.
>>
>>3788715

I use the Ecco 1 and 2 Sega CD games more as music CDs these days than as video games.

Insecure Americans try to ruin everything. Just hide and ignore.

>>3788707
It's kind of sad, Tides of Time is really cool and still looks phenomenal but it doesn't give you the same challenge the first game does.
>>
>>3789434
I just started playing ToT.
Was confused about lack of air meter until I remembered its a continuation of the first game where he gets this ability.
>>
>>3777663
What is ecco 4? The dreamcast one?
>>
>>3777712
I like this game a lot, but ecco is hard enough in 2 dimensions, adding the 3rd is just too much for me. I'm still at the great white shark near the very beginning
>>
>>3788102
A lot of people must be retarded. I wasted 1, maybe 2 lives trying to jump on the barrel like the game had taught me up til that point. Then my video game instincts told me to try the directional buttons and it worked. Kinda stupid that you have to learn it through trial and error, but come the fuck on how is that overly cryptic if you've played one or two other video games in your life prior to that part in Sanic 3?
>>
>>3789531
Totally agree. It's great but quite hard and one of the most claustrophobic games I've ever played.
>>
>>3788707
hard mode ?
>>
>>3789685
Hard mode isn't a lot different from normal.
>>
>>3789551

The problem is the false positive, it seems like you can do it by jumping.

And you technically can with two players playing perfectly.
>>
>>3789685

Yes, hard mode. I dunno what the difference is but I figured after Ecco it would be blasphemy to play it any other way. ToT was still ten times easier. Still a great game though.
