Personally, I think VHS cassette tapes have potential to be the next retro hipster craze. Alot of the best games ever made like doom or quake, go for pretty good money.
Their expansion packs go for even better money.
There are some really obscure titles out there that you could easily walk past at a junk shop without realizing. One pc game ("silver"-something, i cant remember), i sold on ebay for £100, within an hour of posting it.
It's a great market, because there are some high value games out there, but they are so unknown to the majority of retro gaming folk, they rarely get noticed at charity shops, bootsales etc..

The only ones ive kept are my city building impressions games (caesar 3, pharaoh etc).
Though im pretty tempted to sell my copy of the neverhood, as prices are pretty good, and im probably never gunna play it again (great game tho).
oh and in regards to vhs tapes, here in england most second hand shops are giving them away for free.
i dont think they'll become something sought after.

I love big box PC games, they're so comfy and remind me of those simpler times. I buy them every time I see them in flea markets, no matter what the game is as long as they're cheap, which they usually are because nobody wants them.

Last year I bought total of 4 big boxes: Baldur's Gate, Red Baron II, Actua Soccer, and Destiny. Cost me like 5 euros.

I especially loved it when the big boxes included all those free "feelies" and bonus items in regular boxes that nowadays would be included in special collector's editions. Like this Hunt for Red October that includes the original book in the box, how cool is that?

I think it already is. It is surprising how much they cost from the stores around me. I am fortunate to hold onto what I do have, but regret the times I had to "lighten the load" when I had to move, and lost some great oens like Star Control 2, Leisure Suit Larry 6, etc.

I would love to own more PC games in their original physical big box format, but they would probably take more space than they're worth.

I'm planning to get a big box version of all my favorite PC games, even if I already own them on gog, steam etc. just to have them on my shelves as "trophies". WTF? 50 euros for this? I don't know if it's really worth that much, but I have the same game CIB. Had it for over 20 years now, never played it.

It's not one of those 90s style thin cardboard big boxes, but a late 80s thick and sturdy mid box, or whatever those are called. The box itself is this gold foil box with Infogrames logo, and the cover is a slip-on cardboard cover.
The other 80s Infogrames games are just as expensive.

There really is no reason for these to be so expensive, other than as collectible items only hipsters and retro vidya/computer enthusiasts would care about. You can literally get these games for free from any abandoware site.

The only issues old PC games have are trying to get them to run on modern PCs. Theres sometimes issues that fuck with the game for unknown reasons.

Like how if you manage to get Mechwarrior 3 running on windows 7 and above, some of the vehicles driving around will bounce around like they are on the moon.

but I will say CD based retro buying isnt going to reach levels like carts...they just dont last as long. Disc rot sets in at 15- 20 yrs. somthimes even if sealed.

Not really. The newer tapes are worse because they used thinner tape/slower speed (so less tape).

Take a 30 year old 2 hour movie. Fucker weighs 3-4 times as much as a 12 year old 2 hour movie.
Blanks are even worse. Those cvs special 8 hour tape 10 packs are chinsy as fuck.

You save wear on the deck's gears and belts if you use a dedicated rewind device.
Although some of those could cause excess stress on the tape if their auto stop feature (usually triggered by tape tension) is malfunctioning.
You should avoid ffwd/rewind seek when using a deck to ffwd/rewind. That keeps the tape threaded around all the guides/heads when rewinding/ffwding. Its best to stop the tape, so the tape is reloaded into the cassette, then rewind/ffwd. That way the tape isnt moved over the guides/heads at a high speed which could damage the tape if there is a problem.

It depends a lot on storage conditions.

Cheap cd/dvd recordable media will fail first. You can kill one by leaving it in indirect sunlight for a while.

Pressed discs will last longer, but poor storage conditions have already killed some.

I have CDs that are 30+ years old and have a max of a few C1 errors. There's no indication they've deteriorated at all since they were made.
According to hippies plastic in landfills takes 1,000 years to decompose. Plastic stored well must last at least that long. So CDs will last 1,000 years, according to every professor at every university in California.

Hipsters wouldn't know how to install these. Especially since optical drives are dead in the consumer marketplace on most PCs these days. Also there is the whole issue that a lot of these games need a little configuration to work on modern systems and these hipsters won't know how to install Windows XP. PC gaming will continue to be cheap as crap because no one really collects for it and digital sales make it much more simple to play the retro games. Just like how PSN and XBL drive prices down of retro games when they release a digital release copy of an old title.

Although much thinner the plastic tape in a VHS cassette would probably last a similar amount of time. However the unprotected coating on the tape that contains the data would degrade much quicker.
