Squall is dead is fucking stupid and requires one to ignore more than half the game just because, but the Rinoa-Ultimecia one isn't that dumb. At least it works with that the game's showing and in fact does operate under the time loop/predestination paradox as Rinoa must become Ultimecia in the future for the story to exist. It's fun to think about and even Square seems to flirt with the idea with small hints in Dissidia, and at least it unlike squall is dead it doesn't require you to be completely brainless to think about it.

Because Ultimecia must exist and attempt time compression for Final Fantasy VIII to happen. Ultimecia dying in the past by passing her powers to Edea is what triggers the entire plot. So Rinoa needs to become Ultimecia, be killed by Squall and pass her powers to Edea. The theory doesn't really negate it, it just attempts to explain Ultimecia's underlying motivation.

Ultimecia's motivation for Time Compression is she believes it will stop the prophecy of SeeD destroying her. What she doesn't realize is that she wrote the prophecy when she died and went back in time to imbue Edea with her powers. That's the beauty of the predestination loop, it STARTS at the very ending.

Rinoa doesn't have a thing to do with that part of the plot. In fact, retroactively introducing her as Ultimecia only opens up an endless string of contradictions and plotholes. The whole theory is as poorly thought out as the "Squall is ded" one.

Rinoa being Ultimecia doesn't really contradict anything in the game. The only thing it contradicts is the Ultimania guide saying that sorceresses don't live longer than normal humans. But then again the game does show Rinoa entering suspended animation to prevent her from becoming a sorceress, so... like I said, it's a fun theory to think about. It doesn't really contradict anything and it's nonsensical to lump it together with "lol let's disregard the entire game just because".

Normal timeline:

But here's the thing:

Ultimecia belongs to a universe that cannot allow paradoxes, since it exists.

Any universe that exists, has to solve for every potential paradox, or else it can't exist (as in, if she is able to stop the warrior in kiling her, then she would never need to back, and so on...grandfather paradox stuff).

Second Timeline

Edea says that in order to die "in peace", a sorceress needs to pass on her powers. You defeat Ultimecia but she still travels across time and is still walking and talking (albeit severely exhausted) and she can only die once she passes her powers, it's likely that sorceress can't die if they don't pass their powers. That's the only thing the game directly addresses regarding sorceresses dying.

It is never stated that they're immortal, but Ultimania apparetly does say that sorceresses don't live longer than humans.

But beyond discussing a sorceress' natural lifespan, the game also has an entire subplot about people cryogenically freezing potentially dangerous sorceresses, like what happened to Adel. It also almost happens to Rinoa.

If Rinoa gets sealed (or chooses to seal herself) at the Sorceress Memorial, it is definitely possible for her to wake up in the future and eventually become Ultimecia for whatever reason.

Ironically enough, your Selfieroth thing is oddly similar to the actually canon link between FFX and FFVII, lol.

Within the context of the game it's entirely possible for Rinoa to get sealed in the Memorial (the game shows her about to be sealed due to the dangers her powers will eventually represent), for her to lose her memories (GF cause memory loss, this is well documented, and being frozen for years can't be that good either), and eventually become Ultimecia.

Square themselves seem to flirt with the idea not only by not denouncing it even when it's been probably THE most enduring theory regarding FFVIII for both Japanese and western fans, but also by hinting at it in Dissidia, where Ultimecia's weapons are the exact same as Rinoa's. Bear in mind the fact that VIII is the one FF where weapons are 100% personal to each character. Also bear in mind that Ultimecia lives many generations into the future, why the hell would she have Rinoa's exact same weapons from the past?

This is not some wild dumb guess. It does take a big leap in dot connecting, but the reason it has endured so much is because it already fits with the story and the themes the game presents, and also because it seems that Square likes that particular aspect to be open eneded.
