This game is a piece of shit. 100% nostalgia.

It has not a single redeeming feature. Playing it today without having no previous knowledge of it other than Ness was the MC makes you realize how deluded their fans are.

The gameplay is bland as fuck. Totally generic RPG turn based combat with near to zero strategy. You always end up using the same two or three most powerful spells and the rest become useless. PK points lacking all the time so you are always behind the magic butterflies.

The art style. My god, it's terrible, it looks drawn by five year old kids. Shitty and ugly.
>bbut it's subjective
>bbut it's supposed to be that way!

Yeah, no. It's shit, pic related. This is one of them most iconic enemies of the game.
Also, still sprites with no animation other than a few flashy light effects on top of them were a job of laziness even back in the day.
The fact that this game came out in 1994. Seiken Densetsu 3 and Chrono Trigger came out just a year later in 1995 it's just a display of how lazy the developers were.

The music, also terrible. The only good thing about the music it's that it sounds really clear and has a good bass but the themes and compositions themselves plain suck.

This game is a good case of nostalgia goggles combined with fanboyism.

Doubt it. Most of the fanbase never heard of this series until Smash Bros.

>>
>>3769593
Hating things other people like is the easiest way to feel superior to other people without actually having to do something or improve yourself.
You can just claim that you have superior tastes and thus are a better, smarter person than those who like that "trash". Hating on widely praised niche games is just a step above hating mainstream stuff, because those niche games are often used solely to feel superior to others, so by hating them you put yourself one step above even those who claim to be better than the rest.

Happens everywhere, video games, music, literature, you name it.

Earthbound is hate it or love it: the game. It's either your thing, or you're gonna get the worst game you've played.

It's no wonder because it's a pretty niche Japanese game. And yet Nintendo circlejerking is strong with this one, because of the perfect formula: overhyped company + dude retro lmao + "look mom, I'm into obscure games" = """the great missing nintendo rpg classic""".

>nostalgia

>>
>>3769830
even their autistic fansite is called starmen.net

>>
>>3770696
Nope.

There are few if any references to the old game, except for the bad guy. The relevant part of his story is very tiny, and US translation of Earthbound never even references it. Earthbound introduces almost entirely new story and characters with no unfilled gaps. Anyway, Mother 1 has pretty little plot, NES-style; so not much loss here.

Earthbound does mirror the overall premise from Mother 1. But it's not needed to understand the game, more like in every Final Fantasy you have similar enemies/spells/items and Cid. Earthbound once again takes place in a modern day world, 4 kids go to connect 8 melodies and fight an alien boss. Similar cast of a baseball cap boy, a girl, and a nerdy guy in glasses + 1 more hero. PSI powers and weapons are similar too.

If you're dead set on seeing the series roots, you can try Mother 1, to get where old enemies/attacks come from, and the tiny bit of relevant backstory it has. Otherwise, Earthbound is pretty much Super Mother. Same thing once again with different characters, but evolved in many ways, with much more plot to speak of.
>>
>>3770612
Well, I meant to say it's incredibly divisive. For every die-hard fan you will find a die-hard hater. It's a game that suffered from overly persistent exposure. It's not really best game ever and not really a piece of shit. It has some unique features for an RPG, and whether you like them will decide whether you like the game.
>>
>>3769728
There were crosses in it?

Is it possible to play an uncensored, translated version?
>>
>>3770696
Not entirely but you want to play the trilogy anyway. It's just 3 games and they're not overly long. Play them in release order for the best possible exposure to Mother series.
>>
>>3769364
Mother 3 is infinitely superior, more coherent and has a more obvious point. But earthbound is still pretty cool.

Also magic drag queens.

There's this patch http://www.romhacking.net/forum/index.php?topic=19240.0 , I haven't delved into it but sounds like this might be what you're looking for.
>>
>>3771404
Dude, not everyone has time and patience to dump into 3 RPGs. Mother 1 is NES-era game with all the problems that come from it: not very engaging plot, some bland locations, and to an extent repetitiveness. It's good if you play it, but it's certainly not a crime to skip it, especially if you're not sure if you like the series yet.
>>
>>3771419
I didn't say it was a crime to skip it, but if you want the best possible experience out of the series, it's best to play all 3.
Also there's nothing wrong with "NES-era RPG", if you don't like them that's fine, but it's certainly not a crime to enjoy them.

Also. There is this bit of dialogue when you're with the sailor and you're crossing the ocean. I think its before you fight the Kraken. The sailors says "The only thing you've got to lose is your life, and you got that for free."

Could any Anon hook me up with a screengrab of that bit of dialogue? Probably the most profound thing i've ever read and it came from this goofy ass videogame

I love is a funny thing. There's the denial ridden shmuck who thinks his fat wife is literally perfect, and the guy who loves his wife despite her flaws. Most rational fans of Earthbound fall into the latter category but you get retards who assume people thought it was the pinnacle of RPGs. Sometimes things strike an emotional chord with people to make something popular. I think everyone would love every shitty rpg if the writing had a lot of heart and care put into it.
>>
Does anyone get really homesick when they play this game? The way they treat home in this game is just so comfy and thinking about this game always makes me phone my mom. Especially the small moments after the bosses where Ness starts to remember being a baby, and Magicant.

I guess the entire point of the game was that the Earth is our mother since the 8 spots were the power of the earth?
>>
>>3776161
Yes, and the overall theme of mothers and their importance to us. Giegue loved his foster mother. The queen of magicant is like a mom (and wasn't she Ninten's aunt or something?). All protags' moms, especially in 3.

You can go as far as saying Porky's lack of a caring mother led him to all his shit
>>
>>3776161

Yeah, and I replayed this a couple years ago and it made me even more homesick.

I played this back in 95 when it came out. I was 14 and a freshman in high school. My parents were gone for the weekend and it was just me alone in our big house. I made pizza, hooked up the tv to our living room tv!

Got to listen to my music really loud.

It's funny, I have nostalgia for one that weekend because it was so fun and pure. And it's like doubled because the game is about nostalgia and family and home and the purity of youth.

Man, perfect fucking storm.
>>
>>3777074

The thing I remember most about this game was that I 1st saw it at BLOCKBUSTER one day and it stood out due to the giant display case.

I remember loving the humor and the playstyle at the time and only got to Fourside on the three day rental and i knew i had to own the game so i asked for it for christmas.

Many big box stores never carried it and I finally found a copy at a mom n pop store a town over for my parents to go get.

I remember sneaking into the closet and actually opening the game and playing it while they were at work only to put it back when the came home.

Nostalgia aside, this is one of the 1st RPGs i had ever played and introduced me to a genre I love tot his day

When I was younger my older sister's boyfriend modded my xbox and put a bunch of emulators and roms on it. I used to pick through the games at random for hours. When I was home sick from school one day I started playing earthbound. I absolutely loved this game! The gameplay is obviously repetitive and slow but the atmospere was amazing. I loved just hanging around in Onett. I had never ever heard of this game and to this day it's one of my favorites. I stayed home all week to play.
tl;dr
You are a cunt, mate
>>
I like Earthbound for nostalgia and feels, primarily. Watched older brother play through it when I was very young, and thought it was very interesting back then. I don't think I had to be five years old to find it interesting, though. For its time, anyone should've been captured by its charm, and the gameplay should've seemed quite exceptional too. To me, it seems like people who gripe about the game probably don't appreciate a lot of good things in life, and that's usually apparent anyway. I think Earthbound is an intrinsically beautiful game, I'm quite glad it was there for me to experience at a young age and I'm glad it's still one of the few things that makes me smile nowadays. I make sure to play through at least once a year, trying not to forget that some things really can be beautiful if you're paying enough attention.
