Half-assed Hackiness or Minimalistic Masterpieces?
>>3767141
the former
>>3767141
the latter.
>>3767141
the cover doesn't make me want to buy or even pick up that game
The boxes looked better from 1990-1995 when they dropped that style.
>>3767151
Shit design taste detected
It looks awesome
Half-assed Hackiness made by gaijin piggus.
>>3767141
Do you think the weird boxart contributed to the Master System flopping in the States? Imagine you really liked ninjas and were choosing a system based off that, would you choose clipart ninja, or this?
>>3767141
The speedlines really drag it down.
I don't get it, the Atari was full of beautiful cover art but when it came to early western consoles we were stuck with minimalistic shit like this.
>>3767195
Even the name is generic boring
>THE ninja
>>3767206
That's because Nintendo thought it was good business for the game's cover to better reflect what the game was actually like. Atari had that great cover art, then you pop the cart in and it's two squiggles spinning in a grey block.
>>3767214
But it makes your imagination fill in the blanks.
>>3767195
Wouldn't a better comparison be Ninja Gaiden (SMS)?
>>3767206
Didn't that only last for like the first two years, and even then, only for first party titles?
>>3767212
There can be only one.
>>3767206
After the video game crash of '83 Nintendo decided to make the box art of their games more reflective of the actual graphics. This only lasted for like two or three years though.
Early Genesis games have the grid pattern on the background, but they're black so it's a step up over the Master System art
>>3767920
Also to add it at least has actual artwork on it, not just the clipart
>>3767912
Do you meab the North American home console market downturn?
>>3767921
Almost half of all Master System games have artwork just like early Mega Drive games.
The real question is: who is the worst MS fanboy, the britfag or the huefag?
>>3767843
Pretty much. They dropped the pixelshit style around '87 or '88 when they localized the first Zelda. Ice Hockey and Punch-Out
>>3767938
Definitely Huefags. At least Britfags knew when to move on.
>>3767920
I love the black background and white grid from the original genesis game boxes and cartridges
I really like the Wonder Boy in Monster Land cover because it is a really good image of the Mordred type of character; the cruel golden child who has the right and privilege to strike down'lesser' men.
>>3768763
I actually really like the grid pattern.
It makes these cases unique as fuck.
i never had my own sega until like 3 years ago but i always loved the look of the graph paper box art when i was a kid. i'm making some artwork for my shmup stick and trying to steal that look a bit.
a friend of mine growing up had a master system and he would take the shells off all the cartridges so you would just see an exposed pcb sticking out of the console. i always thought that looked cool too
>>3768773
Did you draw that?
Fukkin nice
>>3768773
>Fantasy Bone
Oh my sides...
>inb4 zone
>>3768774
no lmao i can't even draw stick figures
i just google image searched for opa opa and that was the best one
Shitty as they were. They had a certain charm.
>>3768779
This triggers the 'nita.
That 'Trans-bot' could easily identify as a Trans-droid or other.
>>3768779
transbot was a card, right?
is this a thatsthejoke.jpg situation?
>>3768792
Pretty sure every card game that had a western release got a more-common cartridge release too.
>>3767141
my favourite sms cover
>>3767827
Which has awesome art.
I prefer the JP cover, but the western release of Double Dragon was not that bad, even if Billy and Jimmy's outfits are a bit gay on the cover. I thought it was a nice touch from the localization that they used the Spike and Hammer nicknames for the Lee brothers, even if they were never canon.
>>3768779
The BR one is funnier. WEEEEE I'M A ROBOT!
>>3767827
That's a tough one. NES Ninja Gaiden was released two years after The Ninja, while SMS Ninja Gaiden wouldn't appear until 1992. The entire market was very different back then.
A fair comparison would probably be between The Ninja and Ninja Kid on NES, as both were released in the same year, 1986.
They actually even look pretty similar.

I picture there's a unicycle just below the frame.
