Unless you count the original Pendulums, "Digital Monster Ver. S: Digimon Tamers" for the Sega Saturn is the only Digimon game to come out before 1999. So, by default, that's the best one.

Digimon World 3 was a grindfest because that's how a lot of RPGs were back then it was "the thing to do" obviously not the right thing, but the thing.

This. Digimon world is great for the following 3 reasons.

1) The settings were just so comfy.
2) Exploring the world was a great adventure.
3) Rebuilding the town was a great mainquest

Oh yeah, and I guess raising and battling digimon was fun too!
