Essentially a shittier version of puyo puyo
My dad got addicted to Columns back in the day. He got all the way up to level 99 and kept playing for at least an hour because he was convinced there was some kind of an ending. There wasn't.
Columns 1 is still the comfiest tetris clone ever. The great music (which is also fully dynamic!), the sound effects, the small touches like making all jewels not only different colour but different shape too, as well as using great contrast so they are all immediately recognizable.
Later sequels all fucked up at least one of those aspects.

It doesn't even play anything like Puyo Puyo.
Columns really annoys me since it feels completely luck based. Either I stack up the columns too high and lose or I get some random combo that I didn't plan and get tons of points. It doesn't have the strategic elements of Puyo Puyo (in that game, the blocks can go horizontally and detach so setting up combos makes sense) or the structure of Tetris.

>There are similarities present in setting up combos and being mindful of your opponent, but Columns let's you fuck up the enemy's playfield at any moment, which drastically changes the strategy.
Columns doesn't even have competitive play.
You are thinking of the sequels, and at that point it has as much common with puyo puyo as puzzle fighter 2.
I used to own a multicart with 3 games: columns, Klax, and another one I can't remember which. What is another genesis puzzle game? It wasn't puyo puyo/robotnik's mean bean machine.

Fuck, it was Tetris after all lol.
Thanks anon, this was the cart I had.
>Columns was originally meant to be Tetris 2
Then why is it so much shittier than Tetris?
I like the NES pirate better. It left a bigger impression on me.
