What went wrong with Sonic's transition to 3D?

Super Mario 64 had the same issues, but the difference is Sonic's speed would end up getting you killed through no fault of your own.

Those are just simple flaws. There's nothing "wrong" with the attempt to transition. If singular flaws was all it took then SM64 would've been heralded as a disaster.

The way Sonic controlled was absolutely fine, if anything it felt way closer to classic Sonic than any 3D game that came afterward, and that spindash was so deliciously spammable.

The problem is that the platforming was really shallow. They should have designed levels around the crazy physics where you can just rocket Sonic into the atmosphere if you time a jump just right when going up a hill after a spindash.

I don't get why people cream themselves over it, it was fucking nothing. There was no structure, just a big thing full of nothing and some ramps.

I liked Sonic Adventure. It's not a great game and has a lot of flaws, but I believe the game has a really fun and colorful mood that made it enjoyable.
Despite the shortcomings, you can tell there was excitement in Sega those days because they trusted the Dreamcast, and also, the Sonic Team travelled to different countries and tried to make an impressive game. If you see pictures and videos of the development, you perceive an optimistic vibe that I think lacked the rest of 3D Sonic games, specially Sonic Adventure 2 and 2006, which were all gritty, dark and boring.

Also, Sonic Adventure has the best music and the most memorable stages: Casinopolis, Twinkle Park, Speed Highway, Mystic Ruins, Red Mountain, etc.

Bad plots and characters.

Sonic was overshadowed by his friends.

Rushed releases and Bugs. The japanese version of SA1 had to be released again (International Version) due to many bug complaints.

The games tried to be many things at the same time, adding some unnecessary gameplay mechanics like fishing.

—Cliffs: you run into the wall? It obstructs your whole view. Good luck seeing what's ahead.

—Shuttle loops: the camera still retardedly follows Sonic, obstructing your whole view, causing disorientation at best, vertigo at worst.

—Lack of old platforming elements: notice how there aren't many floating platforms and so on. Not a single moment of ol' pinballing all over the screen too. Everything looks like an open surface with some elevations.

This is not Sonic 3D. This is "Mario Bros first person view in HL2" tier of game design. They just took the old 2D levels and put them in 3D with no regard for camera and such issues.

That's a little harsh, bro. It's playable, it's just glitchy and unrefined, like a lot of early 3D from the era. You can't really stand it next to Bubsy 3D or something.

Mind you it's partly SEGA's fault for releasing the game like 20 times and constantly reminding people how much it's aged by making zero improvements. The originally Dreamcast version is still the best and least glitchy, ironically.

Eh, I'm not really feeling his reasoning. Yeah skipping cutscenes and having hub maps is cool but it hardly makes up for the other things he outright says the DC has over it like 360 control and a better camera, not to mention the better lighting on DC which he surprisingly doesn't mention but is quite clear from the comparison videos. Hope his DC is okay though, that noise before every line seems peculiar.

I remember the first time I played this game. I hated the controls. Held forward to run, kept running into walls on the side, especially when the camera changes. Found it too frustrating to care, dropped it, and glad I did. I don't think could stand the rest of the game.

Played the second one. Powered through it. The Sonic sections weren't so bad, but the Tails/Robotnik stages were awful.I didn't mind the Knuckles/Rouge stages most of time.

That's really all there is in terms of the actual gameplay, but I can go on and on about stuff like art-direction and story.

I always thought the Gamecube controller worked better for SA, because it lets you go on a straight line easier, with 360 degrees you're more likely to fuck up your trajectory.

It's super noisy but I only ever got the loading a few times a cutscene. Then again I think I might be remembering my experience with a burned copy, as they often had less loading.

Didn't need some huge plot. Having the characters talk was also a bad idea. My favorite way of telling a story was the s3&k route where little quick cutscenes let you know what's going on.

Didn't care for the open world. SA2 did it right where you just went from stage to stage.

Other that that I didn't mind it. Was it perfect? Hell no but I liked the Sonic stages and the graphics blew me away so I could forgive quite a bit back in the day.
