What's the general consensus on Commodore 64?

SORRY ABOUT THAT, HAHA!
C64 guys are a lot more chill and friendly, unlike Amiga guys.

I adore my 64
My Commodore 64!
>>3753362
A great machine with a great community.
>>3753362
that its for faggots.
The only consensus is that it's better than the Spectrum.
It has some pretty good games, as long as you keep in mind that they were sold for $5-20.
>>3753362
Pretty cool.
Great machine, it's why I got into gaming. The soundchip blows any other 8bit out the water.

>>3755860
This sounds radical, even for a C64 game OST.
Not OP, but I've been thinking about picking up a Commodore as my first foray into retro computing for a while now. I've been really interested in the 128, but have been considering an Amiga 500 instead. Which would be the best choice?
>>3753362
it's like the Nintendo 64 but retarded
>>3756129
>So how much difference is there between the 20 and the C64?

damn shame they released a retarded version in japan

Without Ultimax, we wouldn't have freezer carts.
shovelware machine
>>3756074
128 is definitely a neat machine. Look up Bil Herd on Youtube, he tells some great stories about it's development. There wasn't much software exclusive to the 128 though. Most people (including myself) used them as a glorified C64. All in all, you'd probably be happier with the A500.
>>3756860
Thanks! The "Glorified C64" aspect was part of what drew me to the 128, but I'll seek out an Amiga.

Yes, it is shit. Fuck off, you stupid yank.
>>3753362
So good
>>3753430
Talking about the computer not community. Also lemon64 is a shithole if you ask me, the faggots there are way more agressive then any Amigafags I have seen here.
>>3756960
You're really not welcome here.
>>3758216
Kek, why the butthurt?
>>3758297
I'm not butthurt, I'm not even watching this thread. No one wants to hear any opinions about anything whatsoever from someone who uses the word 'yank'.
>>3758216
Fuck off, Apple faggot. Your computers were always shit.
>>3756960

>>3758124
why are retro computer guys so hostile and grouchy anyway?
>>3758706
Maybe they're mad the worst guy (IBM) won.
Amazing machine. That's also how I got into coding, with BASIC and stuff
>>3758685
>REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
>>3758685
>so fat he has to take a breath during laughter
What are games that defined the system? Exclusives only. Best versions permitted.
>>3758740
>Amerifats calling others fat
>>3758761
But why does this happen with computer guys specifically?
Consolefags are also very shitposty, especially when it comes to brand wars like sega vs nintendo, but in the end you can notice most of them (or at least some) are having fun and just enjoy vidya.
PC guys are always angry and never talk about games, only insult each other and everyone else.
>>3758743
Turrican, Mayhem in Monsterland, the Last Ninja series, Impossible Mission, Paradroid, Giana Sisters, Wizball, Creatures series, IK+, Maniac Mansion
I don't like several of these games personally, but they're considered the "classics" of the C64.
>>3758780
Giana Sisters is a classic? I always assumed it was just some sort of curiosity for looking like SMB1.
>>3758772
Computer guys are mostly hardware, while console guys are games and brand.
I think it's more because most the the actual retro computer crowd is actually quite young and they want to make themselves seem like they are the smart ones and know everything and everyone else is false, if they take it too seriously, they won't even care that they don't have a life, their life is their retro, also probably the hardware isn't widely available and not that cheap anymore, so they are full of jealousy.
>>3758783
It's still a great game.
>>3758783
It's better than SMB.
>>3758792
It's only better if you bind up to a button on an emulator. Otherwise it can't compete.
>>3758792
I like GS, but no.
>>3758786
is the commadore 64 good thing to get interested in them know nothing
>>3758793
or use a moded gamepad
>>3758803
I'd say for demos, yeah.
Else, most games have better ports on other systems, like the Amiga.
>>3758806
Giana Sisters' biggest downfall is that both C64 and Amiga had only one fire button which brought down games like GGS or Turrican. The latter even required you to press space-bar on the keyboard to activate energy lines or press down on a joystick and space-bar to transform into a ball. In both cases, the lack of an additional fire button meant that pressing up made the character jump which is just unacceptable. They're both good games, but best experienced through emulation where you can bind the keys to make gameplay less of a chore.
>>3758803
what
>>3758829
>Amiga had only one fire button
Some games used two. The system itself actually supported 8+dpad, like using a modded Genesis controller, the Doom source port took full advantage of all the buttons.
>>3758840
Why didn't devs take advantage of that then? There are handful of games that use a 2 fire button control scheme.
Let me rephrase myself, the biggest downfall of both C64 and the Amiga was that they didn't have a dedicated controller.
>>3758829
Why is using up to jump such a deal breaker for you? Are you too used to using buttons to jump and are unwilling to learn a new control scheme?
>>3758851
>Why didn't devs take advantage of that then?
Commodore never forced a controller standard.
>>3758858
The controllers are bad and it's hard to get good accuracy with up being jump, I love Amiga platformers but I always used Genesis controllers with rewired UP = A. Also 5V power fix, obviously.
>>3758858
Because it just gets in the way of gameplay. It's really simple as that. Having jump as a button makes it a lot easier to maneuver and position yourself and it's a lot more intuitive. I grew up with a C64 but that kind of control scheme for platformers is just shit.
>>3758859
Yeah, that's exactly my point.
>>3758891
Yeah, I got it, sad to be honest, many of the games had much more potential if they had better controller support.
>>3758783
It's terrible.
>>3755860
Best soundchip.

Times were better then. Etc. Last night, I actually dreamed about playing
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=URobcuTcBFU
But it was a great machine too. I never had the change to actually twiddle with its competitors, so I just have to accept the general consensus that it just was great.
>>3758887
Interesting, using up to jump never had any problems to me but OTOH I rarely tried other systems.

Rad as fuck
In Creatures 2, if you wet your finger and rub it across joystick port 1 then you'd get infinite lives.
Truly a machine ahead of its time.
>>3762052
>you'd get infinite lives
And also fry your CIA
>>3753362
Greatest system of all times from company run by some of worst managers of all times. Commodore is one sad story. But good old breadbox was mindblowing in 1982 when it was first seen and to this day it stays as ultimate optimiser's wet dream

C128D you have in picture is good for it's coolnes factor (that's one sleek case) but other than that it's overprived collectors item.
Other than that its badly overengeniered machine that's really neither here not there. It was awesome for charcking and ripping games. Upon reset from c64 mode you end up with untouched c64 memory and simply typing monitor you get access to simple Machine Code Monitor utility.
How much do one of these Commodore monitors weigh? I have to pick one up, I'm wondering if I can carry it for 15 minutes.
>>3763171
It depends more how fit you are and not how heavy the monitor is exactly
>>3763207
Well, I'm pretty damned fit... for a girl. So like, half-assed fit for a twink? I'll give it a shot.
>>3756550
Don't Japan release retarded versions of pretty much everything they make, here?
>>3762191
>breadbox
what?
>>3763217
Wait what, you are a faggot who is fit as a girl?
>>3763225
The first revision of C64 was called breadbox.
>>3763226
No I'm a girl whose fitness levels may compare to those of a twink. Anyways, off to pick up a 1084S
>>3763258
>girl carrying a 1084S, FOR HER SELF
Yeah right, like that's ever going to happen.
The best indication of just how different computer scene was then is that C64 was and still is a buggy mess. But as buggy software but as buggy hardware.
6510 had restricted instruction set described in user manual because remaining instructions (and register) were buggy
VICII was botched and heavily cpu dependand
for any controll
SID was powerhouse but clunky as hell
Never the less, that served only to fire up coders further. Imagine firing every single undocumented thing, one by one, into C64 and noting it's effect for days, even months at a time. But thanks to those fanatics so many tricks were discovered that we got things like
Fanta in Space (sound routine)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y6mXLxUZvzg
Edge of Disgrace by Booze Design (well anything by then to be honest)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nLIUkBa_mA0
And people keep pushing and finding ways to push it further to this day. Seriously when Cycle Counting (making code run in blocks of 7 cycles since every 8th CPU cycle is dedicated to VICII to trigger line draw) is considered beginners technique that you don't even start coding without you can expect more than just magic.
