What are some retro games with deep crafting systems; weapons, armor, jewellery, etc. It doesn't matter the genre or platform.
Star Ocean 1 and 2 are all that come to mind. In 2 you can craft a bounced cheque that constantly drains your money until you sell it to a shop (and you have to pay them to take it!)
Legend of Mana has fun crafting systems. You can make weapons, armor, instruments, and golems. You can also raise pets and grow food.

Seconding Star Ocean. The third one turns it up a notch by making the ultimate weapons so goddamn awful that equipping them is a really bad idea.
Until you start some item crafting to polish them up.

was about to post this. especially the golem "AI". too bad the game's so easy that all those crafting becomes unnecessary.

Yeah, it's actually more fun to learn and formulate how to temper a certain material or use those tempered items to arrange a golem's AI than actually play the game to some degree. Formulating a certain pet's diet is also fun, and I have probably spent more time doing these 3 things than actually playing the game itself over the years, which I have actually only ever beaten 3 times total.
Too bad that they dropped the ball so badly with magic though. Both creating and using it is just boring and pointless.
