So DD3 was a prequel to DD2 all this time, huh? I thought the series took place sequentially.
Probably retrocon goofiness. Like how they made Sonic 4 a prequel to Sonic CD.
>>3750010
I always thought the first stage shopkeeper in the arcade version of DD3 was supposed to be Marian.
>>3750045
I mean it makes sense if you placed DD2 after DD3, since she gets killed off in 2.
>>3750047
Speaking of which, looks like she gets kidnapped again in this version.
Ah yes. The adventures of Bimmy & Jimmy.
>>3750101
>Bimmy
Is that an AVGN reference?
>>3750103
Yes. It's pretty much a typo. Bet there will be some sort of joke easter egg in DD4.
>>3750105
I'm just joshing with you. Every time someone starts a Double Dragon thread, someone always has to namedrop the Bimmy thing. Also, they already had an actual Bimmy in Neon.
I'm not digging the NES style they went with. It looks like a cheap fangame. They should've at least based it on the arcade versions or made a Double Dragon Advance 2.
>>3750115
glad i'm not the only one who thought this
>>3750095
I wish they were making an actual NES game with a cartridge LE package.
>>3750449
Actually, that's the most common criticism I've seen online for Double Dragon IV. I'm guessing they went for an NES style since those versions of the game are probably more ingrained among retro gaming freaks (especially since DD2 was recently included on the NES Mini), even though the series started on the arcades.
The whole thing just looks pretty tacky. It's not like Mega Man 9 and 10, which at least were designed with the idea that they could pass off as actual NES games. Even the cutscenes shown thus far, have a cheap look to them (pic related). At least the new enemy characters are kinda cool looking I guess.
So, what happened with Sonny, the third Lee brother introduced in DD3? And I'm not talking about Bimmy.
Anyone could recreate DD4 in one day using Game Maker with literally zero budget.
>>3750908
The thing that gets me with the picture is the text. It looks far too clean and smooth to be pushed out of a Fami/NES. Thus giving it a jarring and half-assed look.
>>3750968
He only existed so they could have an excuse to use The Combatribes engine and have up to three players control the same guy. Originally Billy and Jimmy was supposed to be the only twin characters in the roster, but then they gave everyone else a pair of siblings in the final game.
>>3750984
Even the actual art itself looks horrible. Like, they just took snippets of the DD2 boxart and filtered them through photoshop to give them a pseudo-NES look to them.
I'll admit that the cutscene art and character portraits in the NES versions of DD1-3 didn't exactly have the most consistent quality to them, but they looked as badly as this.>>3750908
>>3750998
*but they never looked as badly
>>3750047
What were they thinking with this ending?
No wonder they disowned the arcade continuity in favor of the NES DDII.
>>3750010
>retrocon
jesus fucking christ
>>3751005
Kishimoto originally planned a much longer ending for DD2AC, but his supervisors told him to make it shorter so that it wouldn't consume too much play time (long cutscenes in an arcade game means less time people actually playing the game, which translates to less income), so he decided on a photograph of the Lee brothers and Marian before her death. It is crudely drawn, but I think it fits with the theme of revenge. Willy's defeated but Marian's still gone and nothing is going to change that.
The NES version doesn't quite pull the Revenge theme right. The Shadowmaster, unlike Machinegun Willy (who was an established antagonist retaliating from a prior defeat), is just some FotNS reject who doesn't even show up until the last stage, and Marian just wakes up in the end like a princess under a sleeping spell, which basically turns the entire game into another rescue mission.
They're both good in their own ways though. DD2AC felt a lot darker to me, but DD2NES had more variety in level designs and a better final showdown.
This new timeline makes no sense. I know they changed the story of Double Dragon III in the English localization so that Cleopatra was actually Marian possessed while also removing a few references to the first NES game (since it was localized by a different company), but even the FC version gave no indication it was set before II.
I always assumed the timeline went:
1988: Events of Double Dragon (Billy and Jimmy fight Willy and the Black Warriors)
1989: Events of Double Dragon II (Billy and Jimmy fight the mysterious armed group)
1990: Billy and Jimmy go on a training journey
1991: Events of Double Dragon III (Billy and Jimmy fight the New Black Warriors and then search the Rosetta Stones)
It'll be interesting to see if they have any explanation for this sudden revelation.
>>3750006
did not know
This screenshot doesn't look that bad. Kinda weird they're not being consistent with the NES-style hair/outfit colors though.
>>3750998
>>3751002
Double Dragon 3 (except for the NES game) was god fucking awful
Can we just write it out of history?
I don't care if it's just a rehashy NES hack of DD2 - just as long as they stay true to the principles of the series
>>3754553
Considering DD3 is stand-alone anyway, I don't see what they could get out of writing it out. All the games after DD3 were stand-alone anyways.
>>3750095
That desert level doesn't look 8 bit enough.
>>3754619
I think it has colors that the NES wasn't capable of displaying. The Kunio games on 3DS were also like that (FC-style sprites on highly detailed backdrops).
>>3754756
Yeah, just looks really weird.
I'm surprised they haven't announced a Switch version of DD4 yet. It's a sequel to the original NES trilogy. What more suitable platform for an NES throwback than Nintendo's new console?
>>3756604
kys
>>3756625
How exactly is releasing the game on more platforms a bad thing?
>>3756628
People want to see the Switch fail for some reason. Giving it good games would not help that goal.
>>3756995
Eh, I'm skeptical of the Switch itself, but the console doesn't seem all that irredeemable (unlike the Wii U). I like how they have local co-op in mind with how they designed the Joy-cons, especially when the other platforms are becoming too online-focused.
I don't think the PS4 version of Double Dragon IV even has local co-op now that I think about (it's online only if I'm not mistaken).
>>3756604
>that Linda
me cock
>>3754756
Looks like a GBA game
>>3757645
The GBA doesn't have such a high aspect ratio.
Made this for the character design evolution thread, but it seems to be gone now. /vr/ seems to be acting fast today.
Famitsu scores are in
7/7/7/7
>>3759845
Is that good?
>>3760310
It seems pretty decent for a budget-priced downloadable-only retro game. It's not like it was going to get all 10s or anything.
