Remember when this was new and everyone wanted all the Square games on PlayStation to go with it?
FF6 and CT wouldn't have nearly the same following if this never existed
The remake will sell at least double what FF15 did

Yes we remember

Im definitely going to get this.

I'm curious if they'll keep the iconic box art updated with the new models.

Not like it's such a hard thing to do.

I'm just glad Square Penix didn't COMPLETELY fuck up the story like they did to FF10.
>>
>>3749942
When FFVII was new the only other Squaresoft game on PlayStation was Tobal no.1
>>
As a FFVII fan since release, you guys don't actually think this game will be anything other than a butchered mess, do you?

SE has spent the past ten years going to lengths to prove they are irrelevant and completely out of touch.

All they would have to do to make the remake good would be update the gfx and tweak the materia system. But I can guarantee they won't do that.
They'll make it pretty and their episodic plan of release will cut the game into awkward segments. The materia system will be watered down and key plot points will be either changed/made to be extremely melodramatic or removed entirely.
The amount of time that passes between each episode will be massive, making the eventual assembly of the whole game uneven and retarded.

I thought FFVIIR was the kind of serious deal that would count as a "They have to do this right or they're done for", desu.
>>
>>3750428
It's going to be some sick interim of classic, FF7AC and modern elements. You don't have to be very perceptive to figure that out.
>>
>>3750428

>each episode

Oh dear god I forgot this was episodic. It's fucked lads, end of story.
>>
>>3749942
>FF6 and CT wouldn't have nearly the same following if this never existed
Exactly. Both games weren't big on SNES back when they were released.

>The remake will sell at least double what FF15 did
This depends on the pricing, and you should account for the episode system.

FFXV has already shipped 6 million copies worldwide, which is nowhere near bad—given that PS4 is doing very badly in Japan, that's a good number.

FFVII is a remake, and these rarely sell more than the original. I think a lot of people overestimate the selling potential of FFVII. The overly vocal fanbase does not equate to sales.

>Final Fantasy 1
FF1 was Square's initial breakthrough game, but it wasn't exactly huge. Square went from ~1.3 mln FF1, to ~3 mln of FFVI, to ~10 mln of FFVII worldwide. FFVII was when they truly broke in the West.
>>
>>3750690
I don't even think any Final Fantasy was released here in Europe before FF7.

They just didn't try.

why are cloud's feet so funny looking on the cover?
>>
>>3750702
That's true for the mainline games. However, FF Legends II, III, FF Mystic Quest and Mystic Quest were released in Europe. Also, Square released Secret of Mana and Evermore there.

In any case, NES came late to Europe and didn't do too well there. SNES also wasn't as popular there as in US—8 mln vs 22 mln of consoles. I guess when they saw that FFII (US) sold just around 200,000 copies, they decided not to bother.
>>
>>3750716
*FF Mystic Quest and Mystic Quest Legends, I meant. Those dumb European names sure roll off the tongue, Nigel and Arthur sure tried hard coming up with them

Am I a contrarian for hating this game?
I can't stand Cloud.
I don't like the materia system.
I don't think the plot is that groundbreaking (it's average at best)
I actually hate how fans actually believe this is the first FF game or something, disregarding the superior sixth game.
I hate Square forcing 7 or Cloud on practically everything.

It's just emo material.
>>
>>3750725
I wouldn't regard it as emo in any sense, he's also pretty fruity at points.

But I didn't like FFVII's systems. Didn't hate them either. Materia's basically Magicite with a battle overhaul and the plot, though it may be different, wasn't really too far removed from other media at the time.

So yes you're being a contrarian, but not for disliking the game.
>>
>>3750716
SNES wasn't unpopular compared to its rival (namely the Mega Drive), it actually sold more than the MD. So there could have been a market for it.

But honestly I think it would have flopped, old FFs are too nerdy and frustrating even for someone who's enthusiastic about it.
>>
>>3750725
Which RPGs have a groundbreaking plot for you?
>>
>>3750725

Agreed on cloud, he's a faggot. Also, Sephiroth isn't even that good as a villain. Love most of the other characters though
>>
>>3750786
>Sephiroth isn't even that good as a villain

He killed Aeris and I will hate him until I die for this
>>
>>3750763
> it actually sold more than the MD
I see they both sold around 8 million there. Since these estimations are bound to have some error, I'd call it a tie.

As for potential market, maybe they'd have some of it. But first, how would they call the SNES games? Final Fantasy 1 and 2? They didn't get the first game after all.

Second, if you simply extrapolate by the size of SNES install base (22 vs 8 million), 200–300K copies sold in NA would equate to ~100K copies sold in Europe. That's a fraction of an already unimpressive number.

Third, Europe had painfully little exposure to JRPGs before FFVII—to say nothing about Square brand. While Americans got FF1, and later some decent RPGs like Lufia, BoF, Soul Blazer and such, Europe got absolutely none of that.

So I imagine that a more expensive cart like FFVI would sell very poorly in Europe. With all the difficulties, I guess they thought the tiny potential of profit wasn't worth it.
>>
>>3749942
Yes. I will buy a ps4 just to play this game. No one can stop tbvh.
>>
>>3749942
>FF7
>Relevant to anyone but nostalgiafags who hype it up because it was their first

Kingdom Hearts is what's carrying Square Enix.
>>
>>3750817
I don't think US and EU markets are totally similar. It's not "arr rook same white piggu".

For example, arcades were way more successful in America, for various reasons. Soccer games are only good for Europe, etc.

But yeah, it wouldn't have worked well for FF.

>Soul Blazer
I had it (a European cartridge of it) and it was glorious. We also had Secret of Mana, Illusion of Time (Gaia), Secret of Evermore, and a bunch of others... It was not a 100% virgin market.
>>
>>3751016
There was a pretty big difference between FF7 and the likes of Secret of Mana we had to play previously. You're very thick if you can't see the appeal.
>>
>>3750341
Yet. It's going to happen m8, and it should have been your first expectation when you heard about the remake.

Speaking of, episodic storytelling. Talk about biting off more than they can chew. I'd put real fucken good money on it only being two episodes long, and the second one a super rushed mess to fit the important plot in that disappoints even the madmen who liked part 1.

Who wants to bet againt that and lose some gil? That's what I thought.

this is 100% correct and the reason reddit is fucking trash and nintendrones should collectively kill themselves
>>
>>3750725
>the superior sixth game.
lol, you can hate VII all you want, I myself don't like plenty of popular games, but don't pretend that VI is better with its retarded esper system, bugs, bloated cast and boring second half
also you're delusional if you think Cloud is even half as emo as either Celes or Terra
>>
>>3750786
I agree with you on Sephiroth, the guy wasn't even around for well over half the game and his development is contrived as fuck. Cloud is a good character though.
>>
>>3750763
>it actually sold more than the MD. So there could have been a market for it.
This is only true for the late stages of the 4th gen, before that Genesis was outselling the SNES in the US and twice so in Europe
>>
>>3751284
I didn't get the impression SNES was unpopular or less present than MD back then in my country (say, in 1993). It was fifty-fifty at least.
>>
Wouldn't it be cool if they did something other than just put out more Final Fantasy games?
>>
>>3751624
I wish they would go into the yaoi business.
>>
>>3750786
>>3751258
>Sephiroth isn't even that good as a villain

It's almost like he was being manipulated and led around by The Thing for the entire game.

Saying "Sephiroth is the main villain" is like saying "Cloud is the main character."

It's Jenova and the Planet, respectively.

I'm just fine with that. FF7 conversation gets overblown sometimes just because it was so popular and an entry-game for so many. But the more I think about these games and their settings the more impressive they get to me.

We don't notice, I think, how much interesting stuff is going on the backgrounds of these games, mainly because, well, they're *games.* FF7 has a legit cosmology going on in it that seems tiny because it's all in miniature, and the developers didn't belabor the market with an ideology either.

It's an amazing setting and I think I'm a convert to the three-episode thing now.

compared to you whose never experienced success at all right
>>
>>3750725
You weren't a contrarian until you brought VI into the mix like they always do.

Probably just subtle bait though.

>>3751165
Agreed. Terra's entire character is angst. Meanwhile Cloud can be very playful, assertive, and silly at times.

One thing that really stuck out in my mind was how strangely LOW-tech it was for a science-fiction setting, for example Tifa comments that Niebelhiem only had a single truck, Cloud gets given a mobile phone (the PHS) because he doesn't have one, Jessie's computer is a monochrome command line. You could fill a list of all of this.

The sheer dirtyness of everything makes me think that the world (even Shin-Ra when looking at some of the reactors) are actually in economic decline.
