Since /v/ won't help, I'll reduce my search to games that are considered retro. This is a specific mechanic I'm looking for

Basically, I'm looking for a game that auto-determines the winner of a fight between characters once encountering them; rather than showing a prolonged battle animation

I would say Earthbound or Secret of Mana, but I don't know of any that do it automatically.
