What are the darkest games of yesteryear? The ones brimming with oppressive atmospheres and use dark, muted palettes to suck you in a nightmare. Games that make Castlevania look like a cartoon; games like Splatterhouse, King's Field, GnG, and pic related.

What's that game on SNES where you have to rescue your daughter's soul from hell? That shit was FUCKED.
>>

King of Demons.

Speaking of the SNES, I'd say Dark Half has a pretty twisted atmosphere too, not only when you play as the bad guy but also when you control the good guy it has this unsettling vibe going on.

It's mainly black, with some parts being you and others being aliens trying to kill you.

Pixellated gore and crappy FM music are a nightmarish combination.

I love Waxworks for this.
I hope whoever made the art for this went on to great things, by far the creepiest ingame images i've seen.

I always counted Splatterhouse for being very dark. Not just for its gory stuff but for its bleak as fuck ending. I choose to discard the last two stages, they are needless as the climax of the game happens in the boss fight right before them.

There is something inherently terrifying to me about old horror games that I can't quite explain.

>>3746772
I'll never get over the fact that my low functioning autistic sister absolutely loved watching me play Splatterhouse 2. Especially since she was into the girliest shit ever.

Blood. The humor aside, it has a pretty scary atmosphere.

The readme file on that page describes every line that was changed from the old translation with a rationale for each change and cross-comparisons with the original text, it sounds like they did a lot to clear up lines that were too vague or confusing due to errors in the old translation

Not sure why they changed the styling on the logo though (pic related, compare to the original logo in OP pic)
