The pin connectors are designed to scratch the surface of the pin contacts each time the cart is inserted to break through the resistive oxide layer on the surface of the metal and get to the juicy, conductive metal inside. Same principle behind is at work with PCI slots on your desktop.

By blowing and reinserting, you are mostly giving it another chance to get a good seat and scratch.

Is it really the blowing that does it, though? I tested systems for a year, and found that I didn't need to blow into the cart. It was more like heaving into it while forming a seal around it with my lips.

It worked every time, which led me to believe that the connectors simply need to be warmed up, hence the heaving.

Can anyone else here vouch, or am I just retarded?

Blowing works because the spit in your breath covers the pins and helps with contact.

EXPLAIN THIS

A lot of times it's not about how clean the cartridge is, but its placement within the console. I have to press on the right side of games a little bit to hit the sweet spot of my NES system.

Is it bad to use an alcohol wipe with a tiny watch skrewdriver to clean the inside of the pins?

The reason is because you have corroded/exposed traces and the moisture from your breath lingers on the cartridge and doesn't evaporate therefore completing the circuit. Whereas rubbing alcohol evaporates almost instantly.
