>plays on an HDTV
>>
Every time I see a a /vr/ console on a 16:9 flat screen tv, I am oh so minimally vexed.
>>
>>3727280
Not my fault I can't find CRTs that work.
>>
>>3727280
Eventually that will be everyone.
>>
HDTV have the advantage of square pixels for games developped with square pixels in mind (=most of them).
Everything is a little wider on CRTs.
>>
>>3727295
CRT cucks absolutely BTFO.
>>
>>3727301
no retro games were developed on a display with square pixels
>>
>>3727298
This. People seem to forget that many CRTs are dying and the people that can repair them are all retired at this point (and they aren't teaching their knowledge to newer generations). Eventually, we'll all be playing on HDTVs.
>>
>>3727314
There's CRT's working from the first 80's, I don't think we are going to have that problem soon.
>>
>>3727314
Do CRTs only die from long use? If so, perhaps it might be worth getting a few extra CRTs from thrift stores/craigslist to future proof before they shoot up in price.
>>
>>3727314
Maybe we won't encounter a true CRT rarity in our lifetime, but it will inevitably happen.
>>
>>3727319
Right now is the best time to buy crts, it's only been about 10 years since production stopped, they are still plentiful and cheaper than ever. In 20 or 30 years they will probably be owned by retro gamers only.
>>
>>3727321
>>3727314
Repairing CRTs isn't some super secret forbidden martial art that has to be taught from generation to generation, it's just things like replacing dead capacitors and fixing warping geometry issues dude, information that's readily available online. They'll be around for a very very long time, unlike LCDs which cannot be repaired by human hands once they're damaged internally.

>>3727319
They don't. What happens is that they run worse over time.
>>
>>3727336
I hear you, many LCDs are also easily repaired by replacing bulging capicitors though. I get one or two a week, usually the power board although the last Samsung I did had a faulty backlight inverter.
Can't believe how many get thrown out when it takes $2 in parts and 15 minutes of time to diagnose and repair.
>>
>>3727346
I hear CRT TVs can be extremely dangerous to repair. Is this true?
>>
I wish it was easy to find people willing to RGB mod old CRTs
>>
>>3727347
Only if you're an untrained idiot and careless when adjusting pots or replacing anode filters etc.

I'm okay with this
>>
>>3727361
>Framemeister

Isn't just cheaper and easier to have a CRT?
>>
>>3727365
It is but it is also amazing how stupid some people are and waste money on a magical device.
>>
>>3727336
How do you fix a vertical collapse? My old CRT died that way and I haven't gotten rid of it yet.
>>
>>3727365
If you live somewhere where there are an abundance of CRTs going cheap, congrats, get as many as you can store. There have been literally 0 non-HD CRTs anywhere near me for years.
>>
>>3727414
Have you looked on Craigslist? I just looked on mine and there are like 10 recent listings of people offering Trinitrons for free. And I don't live in a super populated area or anything...
>>
>>3727414

Weirdly the opposite to me. I often see CRTs abandoned in front of people's homes but I cannot recall having seen one that is HD.
>>
>>3727420
Not just craigslist but local buy sell groups on Facebook, apps like OfferUp and LetGo. I find loads but haven't been in a position to be able to go get one yet
>>
Those CRTs are going in the landfill tho never to be seen again. I'm on this NES fans group on facebook and they are all about playing on retrons and hdtvs. Shit triggers the fuck outta me to be honest
>>
>>3727441
BUT ANON, YOU CAN PLAY IN HD!!!
why do retro enthusiats care so much about seeing 8bit in hd? are the squares too blurry?
even pat the nes cunt loves when retro clone consoles have HDMI ports.
>>

Input lag.
>>
>>3727351
>untrained

Yes, that's kind of the point.

>>3727426
They show up every now and then. Kind of rare though since HD is basically a standard that arrived with LCDs, so the only people buying HD CRTs were the ones too dumb to just buy a flat screen.
>>
>>3727454
unless youre playing streetfighter competitevly, the 0.0312 second input lag is fucking unoticable
there are no games that require milisecond control.
and lets face it, you have no friends so you can still play streetfighter vs ai with that 0.03second lag
>>
>>3727465
Eh. It's pretty noticeable in the Mario games.
>>
>>3727465
You're bullshitting and you know it
It's extremely noticeable
>>
>>3727280
It does not matter on what kind of screen you play, What matters is that you play. Nobody care what I played until I played The Mask
>>
>>3727414
That's weird. I had to throw tons of them.

>>3727336

You also can't repair anything inside the tube of a CRT.
>>
>>3727447

>>
>>3727465
I AM playing fighting games competitively.
>>
>>3727457
>Kind of rare though since HD is basically a standard that arrived with LCDs, so the only people buying HD CRTs were the ones too dumb to just buy a flat screen.
Early HD LCDs were blurry as fuck during fast motion, so many people stuck with HD CRTs at that time.

Or went with Plasma. It took Hitachi and Fujitsu a while to introduce ALiS panels though, making HD possible in reasonably sized sets - ironically smaller rather than larger.

Pioneer then made 1080p possible a couple of years later and, along with incredible black levels, took flat panels to a level which has arguably not been bettered since.

I've notice a lot of JewTube collectors, despite having a shit ton of original games and consoles and more than enough space, not only play with a HDTV, but own and shill the fuck out of chintzy garbage like Retron 5, SOAC consoles and Pandora Boxes for arcade stuff, and I just don't understand it.
>>
>>3727772
Well they're not going to get many kickbacks for shilling CRTs now, are they?
>>

I have 2 CRT tvs and a 65" plasma. I don't have/notice any scan lines or massive pixels on the plasma. Its a little sharper and the colors are brighter. I also don't sit 5 feet away from my tv.

What is the best place to buy capacitors online?
Do I have to buy in bulk in order to not be ripped off?
Should I buy bulk of the same exact type or buy an assorted capacitor kit?

Well of course they don't care about low input lag it's not like they you know actually play the games.

Don't most HD tvs have a game mode that helps with input lag by shutting off most of the video processing? My refresh rate is around 20ms according to CNET. Is it even possible for the eye to notice that?

>but muh trinitron

>>
>>3727889
Yes, input lag is noticeable at that time. I prefer to think about it in individual 60fps frames (1 frame = 16ms), and I'd probably notice that when playing a game with 1 frame of extra input lag.

That instantaneous response time is even more noticeable in retro games, because new games usually have some kinda bullshit animation added in that only makes menus less satisfying and slower.
>>
>>3727889

I love the setup on my LCD with the OSCC. SNES, Genesis and Dreamcast all look amazing.

Little input lag and I can play in my living room where I watch sports and movies and shit. It's kinda nice.
>>
>>3727414
Then just buy a PVM or something off of ebay, moron. It would probably be cheaper than a framemeister AND it would look better and require nothing more than plug and play for almost every big system.
>>
CRT's are a fucking eyesore for people who have "nice" things and places.. even in an office or den it looks terrible..
>>
>>3727963

I have old CRTs back from childhood as well, and both are trinitrons though??
>>
>>3729046
PVM would only look better if you put the effort of using the proper cords. PVM's can look shitty with Svideo.

Framemeister at least looks good (even on 150 inch projectors) with s-video.
>>
>>3727492
>>3727474
You need to buy better tvs (samsung/sony) or better projectors (benQ/Sony) if you notice the display lag.

>>
>>3727283

One hilarious thing I have learned over the years, is that 90% of you "crt purists" werent even fucking alive when nes/snes/genesis/etc were out. Yet you act like some retrogame nazi, lol. And someone like me who actually owns all the older systems cuz i bought them AS THEY CAME OUT, doesnt give a shit about playing them on a CRT(whether it be cart or rom form). And I of course own several crt tvs(again something i dont understand why people complain about. they are easy to acquire and dirt cheap.) So my theory has been that since i ALREADY played probably thousands of retrogames in their prime on crt tvs(we had no other option) that its no real treat for me. I already did it. I dont need to keep doing it. And all you children today desperately want to recreate what us older gamers already experienced 10fold. Is that what it is? cuz maybe that makes sense. Or youre just a bunch of idiots. Please chime in.

The opinion of one casual who thinks he's an oldfag means nothing when it comes to CRTs. Not everyone is happy only playing RPGs like the worlds oldest underage. If kids want to play games that require fast reactions and no lag on CRTs I don't see why you have a problem with it.

idk why you would buy a pvm without going the full mile and hooking all your shit up thru rgb

but im in the process of converting all my shit to rgb since I just got a pvm and since gamecube and n64 are so irritating to get an rgb signal out of, s-video is the next best thing until I hardmod the consoles for rgb output and the svideo looks pretty amazing already compared to composite i gotta say. since its so expensive (or annoying to do yourself) im considering just leaving them svideo to save myself the cash and the headache
