It's literally less than 5 minutes, the Ridley fight ends when Samus is damaged enough so if you just keep jumping into Ridley without shooting you can end the fight very quickly

What a bunch of whiny faggots.
Look, I despise 'cinematic' games, movie games, unskipabble cutscenes, etc but Super Metroid and Half-Life are nothing like that.
These two are EXACTLY how cutscenes should be in a game: short, straight to the point, and set the tone and atmosphere of the game. Plus in both games they're like the only times you have to wait for a story part.
>>3727062
Secret Of Mana's intro bugs me a bit.
>>3727134
holy fuck someone I agree with
Playing it for the first time right now and Midgar before leaving was pretty close to perfect. Story got retarded as soon as they left
>>3727062
It takes less than 5 minutes to start a new SM game. How fucking ADD do you have to be to find that challenging. Jesus christ, my children will never know what a smartphone is.
>>3727092
> want to start playing rpg
> remember it's a rpg
What's the point of story in games? These cinematics are only interesting the first time you see them.
>>3727062
It's usually non /vr/ games that give me this feeling.
>>3727062
Unless you really need the three save slots, you can reset the game just after the intro cutscene and the game saves it, that way you only need to copy the slot to another one to start a new game without having to watch the cutscene again.
That's what ALL speedrunners do.
>>3727982
>muh videogames are art
That being said, I like games in story, but developers should really add "arcade modes" to games that just automatically turn off cutscenes for people who just want quick play.
>want to play ____ game with an intro
>I sit patiently through the intro because I'm not a fucking sperg.
>>3728063
Me too, I never was the type that gets annoyed because of cutscenes.
>>3728267
eh 5 minutes is still long considering most /vr/ games are up and running in like under 30 seconds
>>3727306
SM is awesome because besides the intro cutscene, the entire game's story is silently conveyed. It's such a departure from most other games, that you may not realize it because it's much more subtle.

>Want to play me some Ikaruga

>40 min
Try when it's 2 hours
To be honest, cutscenes are only annoying if I already saw them, I can get over literally one hour of cutscenes in any RPG without problems, I guess that forced cutscenes are problem only if you're replaying a game and already know the story, I can see how it gets in the way of the gameplay.
Personally I don't really replay many games, I prefer to search for "new" games, like underrated gems or titles that I ignored without noticing.
No loss to me.

Gee thanks I always only find items in all games
>>3727134
>>3727565
Nah, in my opinion it STARTS to look like a FF game when you get out of Midgar, before it the game is a bit too grimdark and cyberpunk (not that I have a problem with these themes but) to me FF is about adventure, passing through deserts, forests, snow, going from one city to the other searching for some important item, then fighting some giant monster boss afterwards.
>>3728314
It's true, but fuck, you're playing a console game supposed to take several hours of playing at least, with a saving function. 5 minutes is not that bad given it's ONCE for the whole game.
OP took way more time to write his post and read the replies than it takes to go through these measly 5 minutes.
>>3728347
Star Ocean 2 has a slow start but at least shit happens in the earlygame. I traded in DQ7 on the 3DS after three hours of FUCKING NOTHING.
>>3727134
Back then I thought the whole game would be in Midgar (because it's so fucking BIG). Weirdly enough after the party got out of the city I felt mildly disappointed. Like screw these places I want Midgar again.
>>3728370
FF7 is dieselpunk, not cyberpunk.
>MGS
>All the codec sequences I have to button mash through
>All the torture sequences that I have to button mash through
At least the codecs were sped up in later games.
>>3728410
You'd think the codec would be fast even on the first game since the PS1 was famed for its on-chip MPEG decoder.
>>3727272
>gotta have honest fresh reactions for that quality retro let's play channel I've been planning on starting

Super Metroid is pure game kino

>not keeping 2 saves from where you land on Zebes ready via the save copy feature
Wow, can you start tripping so I can filter you please?
>>3728002
b-b-but that's how the developers originally intended.
Automatically? No. Press whatever to skip, fine. Some cinematics were great and worth watching. A small box of text that scrolls >9000 times, not so much.

That's actually one of the reasons I like Midgar so much. It's not a natural terrain biome, it's a concrete jungle with its own rules for terrain. There's the plate that looks like a normal town, the slums in the lower level, the reactors, the office tower, and a whole mess of hidden infrastructure like the sewers and railways.
I really wish Midgar had been a fully fleshed out city that you could return to at different parts of the game. Maybe keep everything the same leading up to your escape, exploring sectors 7, 6, and 5, send the player back after the crater events (Instead of to Junion maybe) and let them see a few more undeveloped sectors, then instead of paradroping onto the HQ have the players infiltrate through the remaining sectors up to Shinra HQ. It's such a rich place, and sadly you only really see three slums in their entirety, leaving 5 others and the eight plates entirely untouched.
>Want to play STG game I never managed to beat before
>Boot it up in MAME
>Make incredible progress despite rustiness, make it 2/3 of the way in before I die to patterns I didn't entirely remember
>Brimming with confidence, I accept the game over and try again from the beginning having made a great warmup run
>Out of nowhere, my skills regress to almost nothing and I'm dying all over the goddamn place
I can definitely imagine the frustration people with legitimate A.D.D. feel.

I know what you meant.
I'm saying the game is just fine.

Man if it got bumped up to 2001 we'd have GBA, Gamecube, PS2 and Xbox threads.
I loved /vr/ (still do) when it was made but I think now is a good time to let 6th gen join in.
