duke could have been one of the great characters in vidya i think. his destiny was to become the meta FPS guy but it hasn't really worked out. i think in an alternate universe he actually has a much brighter future and a stellar career.

the whole thing with duke is that he knows that the player is using him to indulge insane power fantasies and there's really nothing he can do about it. in DNF, there's a scene where Duke can actually pick up a piece of shit and start flinging it around. when the player does this, Duke says, 'Aaaaahhhh...what am I doing?' he's disgusted with himself in this hilarious way.

Duke looks like he doesn't gaf, and of course, he doesn't - but he's also aware of the fact that the player is using him and making him do horrible things beyond his control sometimes. he can only watch as some alien entity - the player - makes him pick up feces and throw it around the room. then a moment later he's walloping some battlelord's balls like a speed bag. he lives a completely surreal life, but that's what makes him i think more interesting than your standard FPS hero.
