I was playing zelda II recently. it really is a good game: the overworld, how it handles random encounters, the magic system, combat, atmosphere, etc. and its difficult, with the final areas being legitimately challenging.

Dark Link is a worthy final boss. I'm able to win the fight fairly (no corner glitch, no magic) but not consistently.

gladly. Dark Link has the same number of hp as you, so if you go in with full health, you and him are evenly matched. it's a fair fight, same hp, same moveset, mano y mano.
using the shield and life spells effectively give you significantly more hp than Dark Link, which is unfair imo. the whole point is that he is your equal, and you must overcome your own inner darkness.

I read somewhere that the original famicom version is superior to the NES version, but I can't confirm that.

just did a bit of research, there seems to be alot of version differences. it seems like the NES version is better in many ways, but not all. in particular, the water and lava tiles were originally animated, and the trick against Dark Link didn't work because he had better AI.

GBA port is surprisingly pretty good, except for flickering issues. You know PS1 sometimes has an off-putting vibration? Like that, but 2D. Still that's better than the Zelda 1 port which has like a 20 second wait time when you press pause.

in general, after doing in depth research (youtube and cuttingroomfloor) it seems to me that the NES version is an improvement in most regards. there's only a few areas where the famicom was better, as I mentioned here >>3724017

I kind of wish the series had more humanoid bosses like this, they're usually saved for "special" non dungeon bosses.

In fact, Phantom Ganon is the only humanoid dungeon boss that isn't a miniboss.

That being said, Twinrova makes me also wish some of the bosses had more character to them.

Zelda II kicks the shit out of the first game. I don't want to sound like /v/ hipsters who say it's the best in the series, but it definitely beats the first one.

The first game is alright, but it's very easy and repetitive. It's got shit for level design and enemy variety.

Every Zelda from II onwards has been phenomenal

Zelda II has the best of what you can consider gameplay, while Link's Awakening is probably the best holistic adventure. Wind Waker is the prettiest, and all the others aren't really worth mentioning since they're pretty much all the same game or strictly inferior to the 3 mentioned.

You could pretty much play Zelda II, then Link's Awakening, then Wind Waker, and you'd just be done.

I don't know about that second part, but I respect the first opinion. My favorite three are ALttP, ALBW, and WW, but the rest of the series is right behind them.

The only others that I think are mediocre are Zelda 1 and Majora's Mask, and I even feel bad saying that because I have fond memories of them and they're good games, I just think every other Zelda has edged them out in terms of pure fun.

I don't know if there's a "proper" way to do it, I like the falling slash, it's not like they can't still be a threat, especially the blue ones. I beat the game before I learned that trick though, using >>3729220


What I want to know is how to effectively fight those fucking Fokka enemies in the final palace. If I can ignore them, I always will, because they just suck that much.

it's possible to duel the iron knuckles without the falling slash. it's not easy to defend against them and get past their guard, but it can be done. you have to git gud at reacting to them and alternating high and low strikes - the low strike being the most effective. the blue knight is the hardest, but he has a recognizable pattern to his attacks.
