Capcom retired Mega Man because they honestly didn't know how to improve or transition the concept. I mean, yes, 9 and 10 exist and they were fun, but they're just the same fundamentals applied to new level designs. I'm not saying that's bad, it's why people still eat up New Super Mario Bros. even if it's just new level designs with barely any additions. But Mario, on the other hand, has gone through several transitory phases in order to keep with the times, from collect-a-thons, to collect-a-thon and linear 3D platformer mixtures, to now a pretty streamlined linear 3D platformer approach. Mega Man went 3D with Legends and then just... didn't.

Mario dreamed up what happened in SMB2, and then woke up, took his friends to a cave where he heard a cry for help, and then he saw exactly what he saw in his dream.

That bit with him waking up at the end of the game is just a nod to the prologue, you literally played the Dream about the adventure Mario was going to have the next day.
