Is there any reason to actually own a Dreamcast?

This is a blue board which means that it's for everybody (Safe For Work content only). If you see any adult content, please report it.

Didn't (almost) every single good game get superior ports on either PS2, GameCube or Xbox?
>>

No, no there's not. Better to avoid it all together. In fact you're better off avoiding this board completely, I hear /v/ is a much better place.

>get superior ports

If they were a NAOMI game (Crazy Taxi, Marvel vs Capcom 2, Ikaruga, etc), they were inferior since the Dreamcast hardware is identical to a NAOMI system, so the DC ports were perfect. Then there's non-arcade games like Sonic Adventure and Skies of Arcadia that play and/or look/sound better on the DC. As for exclusives, DC got lots of gems like Shenmue, Illbleed, Blue Stinger, D2, Maken X, Cannon Spike, Gundam Side Story, Metropolis Street Racer just to name a few. So yes, there's plenty of reasons to own a DC.
>>
>>3716387
If you are playing on an LCD then absolutely for the 480p output.
>>
>>3716387

On the contrary, ports of Dreamcast games are often inferior. The Dreamcast is a treasure trove of arcade-perfect or near-arcade-perfect ports. There's also plenty of original games that never got ported. Keep in mind the Dreamcast can play burned games with no modification.
>>
>>3716426
This picture is not correct because House of the Dead 2 is also on Xbox (it's included in House of the Dead 3).

>they were inferior since the Dreamcast hardware is identical to a NAOMI system
Not exactly. NAOMI still has a lot more RAM than Dreamcast. And only the NAOMI version of HOTD ran at the same clockspeed as Dreamcast, the other NAOMI games had its GPU running at a faster clock speed.

I get your point about it being pretty much the same set of hardware, making ports super easy, but that doesn't mean the game can't be improved off the original arcade version when ported.

>Sonic Adventure
Pretty sure the DX version being worse is a meme

>Skies of Arcadia
The sound quality is better on Dreamcast, sure. But the GameCube version has extra content and a fine-tuned encounter rate. At minimum, it's a toss-up between the two.
>>
>>3716387
DC is still a fun console, and many of the ports were somehow different enough from the original games to warrant playing both.

DC is also the best looking console ever, if you ask me. I love the design. The only other console that comes close to being as good looking is the GameCube.
>>
>>3716450
>The only other console that comes close to being as good looking is the GameCube.
Yeah, I also find fisher price lunch boxes sexy.
>>
>>3716445
Some can. Mine cannot, because it's a 2 model.
>>
>>3716387
Depends on which ones.
If it's an actual Sega made game then yes 7/10 times there are superior versions of them on the other consoles. When it comes to arcade ports however, that's when the Dreamcast starts slapping their shit around. Before Capcom and SNK and whoever else started pumping out HD remasters over xbox live the Dreamcast version of MvC, Garou, etc were pretty much the only acceptable versions of the game outside of the actual cabinets.
Besides, not every excellent Dreamcast game got ported to another system beyond it. Can't play the best version of Soul Reaver anywhere else
>>
>>3716472
>Garou
PS2 version (NTSC-J) is the tournament standard. Dreamcast version has input lag.
>>
>>3716447
>I get your point about it being pretty much the same set of hardware, making ports super easy, but that doesn't mean the game can't be improved off the original arcade version when ported.

G-REVs Under Defeat is still the most accurate on Dreamcast.
Then on the other hand we have stuff such as Ikaruga on the 360 which changes enemy patterns and what not hence in a certain sense it's not even the same game.
>>
You could get a lot of the popular DC games on literally any of the other 6th Gen consoles. The Dreamcast was basically a refined 5th Gen console that was utterly crushed by the rest of 6th Gen line.

>>
Reminder that Sega have never won a console war.
>>

And yet, their consoles are superior to anything that Nintendo or Sony shat out.
>>
I just bought a really clean dreamcast and 2 controllers for 65 bucks. I feel like I overpaid because I got my 1st dreamcast for around 24 dollars around 5 or 6 years ago, but this one was well kept so I decided to go for it.

I always felt like a heretic for saying I preferred the Gamecube version, but all that extra content was fucking excellent, and the lowered encounter rate was pretty nice, although I didn't notice it being THAT much lower.

And depending on your sound system, most people won't notice the drop in audio quality. Pretty much everyone here on /vr/ plays using built-in TV speakers, and those are fucking garbage anyway.

Well to be true Ps2 has Gunbird 1&2 but I think it's an horrid port also one of the rare games of the whole catalogue that doesn't have a saving option.

I think having a DC will always be good because it has one of the best video signals of any console ever and with RGB or VGA it just looks better than anything between N64 and Wii. Too bad the lenses are shit and it has a lot of other problems, now i'm having trouble with Shenmue discs in two DC at the same time.

>Shenmue
Not exclusive. The rest of the garbage you listed is hardly a reason to own a Dreamcast.
>>
>>3716447

>Pretty sure the DX version being worse is a meme

It's no meme, it's well established and easy to find information on. Recently there's been work done porting the Dreamcast lighting engine to the DX version, it makes a drastic difference as the DX version has almost no dynamic lighting and render effects which are mostly broken https://forums.sonicretro.org/index.php?s=8d95a5f483b036ed8034313482e399a3&showtopic=36292

That's not even getting into the new glitches and 'improved' camera, it's one of the laziest ports in history bar none. I barely play SA at all compared to the sequel but I can immediately notice the difference when I fall through the fucking pier on Emerald Coast for the 4th time in a row.

Uh, sorry my friend, but this has now been proven to be more falsehoods spread by Dreamcast fanboys.

Digital Foundry recently proved that the Xbox version not only has better texture quality but also runs at a substantially higher framerate.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7HNOSQqoUcg

On that note, Dreamcast fanboys have been claiming for years that Crazy Taxi on PS2 has slowdown. I've compared the two versions back to back and discovered that it is the Dreamcast version that has slowdown and the PS2 version which has less slowdown.

There a several ramps in the game where driving off them slow the Dreamcast version to a crawl. However, the PS2's framerate does not falter when driving off those ramps. The hilarious thing is that the Dreamcast version is based off the original arcade hardware, so the PS2 version actually improved on it.

the difference between dreamcast and xbox isn't a matter of anisotropic filtering off vs anisotropic filtering on, it's mipmapping off vs mipmapping on
> It's like the first version of FXAA but 3 times blurrier.
quincunx anti-aliasing has nothing to do with FXAA, it's not post-processing, it's MSAA 2x with an offset that gives MSAA 4x results at yes, the expense of some sharpness

but it's MSAA 4x on a bloody 6th gen game, it's totally worth it unless you are a jaggies lover

>A Sony focus group found that teenage boys would not admit to owning a SNES rather than a Genesis.[45] With the Genesis often outselling the SNES at a ratio of 2:1,[46] Nintendo and Sega both focused heavily on impression management of the market, even going to the point of deception, with Nintendo claiming they had sold more consoles in 1991 than they actually had, and forecasting they would sell 6 million consoles by the end of 1992, while their actual U.S. install base at the end of 1992 was only just more than 4 million units.[47] Due to these tactics, it was difficult to ascertain a clear leader in market share for several years at a time, with Nintendo's dollar share of the U.S. 16-bit market dipping down from 60% at the end of 1992 to 37% at the end of 1993,[48] Sega claiming 55% of all 16-bit hardware sales during 1994,[49] and Donkey Kong Country helping the SNES to outsell the Genesis from 1995 through 1997.[40][50][51][52][53] According to a 2004 study of NPD sales data that presents year by year charts through 2001, the Sega Genesis was able to maintain its lead over the Super NES in the American 16-bit console market.[54] According to a 2014 Wedbush Securities report based on revised NPD sales data, the SNES outsold the Genesis in the U.S. market.[55]

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sega_Genesis#North_American_sales_and_marketing

All of that sounds to me like the Mega Drive was doing just fine before Sega foolishly killed it off prematurely to focus on the Saturn. Of course, it's hard to be certain, seeing as that paragraph even says that Nintendo were found to lie about their sales, and for all we know, Sega could have too. Anyway, I'm not here to fight 25 year old console wars. I like both consoles and in recent years I've probably been playing more SNES, but half of its best games came out in late 1994 to 1998, when Sega's release lineup had become a desert. Sega made stupid choices to compete with Sony while Nintendo were patient.

I just hope my Shenmue discs are not suffering that because they look like new.
Maybe the best option would be flashcard.

God, I have a completely fucked Crazy Taxi and it works perfect while my Shenmue 1&2 don't.
It seems you can solve something touching the lens but i'm pretty bad at those things.

Is there a reason not to own a DC? It's dirt cheap and you can play pirated games without even needing to do any modding or anything at all.

Is there a decent way to play a pirated copy of this game yet? I remember nobody being able to get it to run.

I had to fix my OG XBOX today by using my brother's XBOX to power my extra HDD I was adding to mine. He decided to be an asshole and one of the things he said was "I wanna see it working before you give it back." Well, it's working. And I changed his screensaver to "I'M A DUMB NIGGER HAHAHA" and his nickname to "Cuck."

Because I wanted to tell him to go fuck himself, but this feels better.

I bought a Dreamcast today. Model 1.

Before I grab a big stack of CD-Rs what should I download?
>>

Virtua Fighter 3.

No, you tool. The MVS is the tournament standard. PS2 comes with macros. Feel free to let me know what these 'tournaments' you've been to, because it sound insignificant.

PS2's Crazy Taxi's floor also disappears into nothingness, you faggot. Did you play the game, yes or no?
>>
try get the exclusive games to dreamcast imo

power stone 1-2 (why wasnt this ported to other consoles?)
cannon spike (decent but somewhat short arcade game)
outtrigger (fun arena fps with awesome controls also has 3rd person mode which is the best imo)

they have an unique feel to them

Maybe you're copy of the game is glitched. Or this is kind more mindless PS2 hate.

Not a "console", but it is on PSP.

>go to a local game store
>see a Gamecube, but something isn't right
>walk up and see that the white part with controller ports has harsh yellowing
HOW? It's a fucking Gamecube, not a Super Nintendo. Age has nothing to do with it. You'd have to be a chain smoker, and make sure to always blow each puff directly onto the poor thing.

You definitely overpaid but it was probably premium price because the dude cleaned it up. I got mine a couple years back for less than $35, same set as yours, though that was before retro game shit started shooting up crazy high like they are now.
If you don't got it yet, go get the Dreamcast version of Soul Reaver because it has superior graphics and controls compared to the PS1/PC version. Just seeing how much better the real time environment transformations look can make you wet.

If I remember right there's a port of the original metal gear solid that's the best version of the game

I am willing to bet its your drive over the discs; I have a black Sega Sports DC that made me think I was burning bad discs/fucking up my retail discs but it turns out the drive was just fucked and my other DCs work without issue. I am tempted to see if there's a pot to adjust on it.

It's not a port, it's actually an emulator disc that allows the PSX version of Metal Gear to be played on the Dreamcast.

Here's a YouTube video on it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ekL9WL_qJXk

No, not at all. It clearly fades floors out on a slope. Now, answer my question that you tried to dodge. Did you or did you not play the game?
>>
>>3724376
Sadly I have the same problem in two different Dreamcast. So the two are fucked or the discs are fucked. I'm fucked, that's for sure.

Aside from Marvel 2 on PS2 all those fighting games are also equal to the arcade on the other 6th gen platforms

Yeah they really showed what quality meant with the first two years of the PS1

PC has better resolution, Dreamcast has better models, and controlls are more of a preference thing
