How do I apply this fucking patch? I supposedly need an ISO of the game but all I could find were archives containing either

1. a .bin file and a .cue file

2. .ccd, .img and .sub files

I can't seem to be able to turn any of these into a workable iso.

If anyone successfully did this, what applications did you use and what was the process? Maybe the programs I've tried so far have been garbage or I'm doing something wrong.

I was about to play this on my psp. What are the changes to the game?

I tried applying the patch with ppf-o-matic to the .bin file and it didn't work, then to the .cue file and... the program said the patching was successful, even though I had to pick "all files" for the program to even be able to read the .cue file at all.

I have no fucking idea if it worked; I started the game right now and I'm waiting for the intro to finish in the emulator window so I can check if the base character stats were altered the way they were supposed to.

By the way the character portraits by Toshiaki Hontani in this game are really fucking good and miles above the ones in Grandia 2.

I thought it looked like animator art before even looking up who did them. It was cool to find out that a guy responsible for animating a whole bunch of cool old anime scenes not only drew the portraits for this game but also worked as executive director. Plus has a massive page dedicated to his work on this game (which he seems quite proud of)

I'm just typing this shit up to waste time until the intro completes

Get CDMage, open the cue/ccd, right click on the first track and extract to 2048 mode ISO.

Not what the developers intended.
>>
>>3710971
How engaging are the mechanics if you play through the game as-is (and don't grind at all, because I always try not to do that in JRPGs)? I played up until the bit where you fight a bunch of orcs in a mine and it was pretty simple - does it go up significantly after that?

JRPGs are obviously not a hard genre, but there's still a clear difference in player involvement between various games and I usually need at least SOME level of mechanical engagement to be able to have fun.
>>
>>3710986
>>3710971
Also take into account I barely ever play JRPGs so some things will perhaps feel less obvious to me than they would to someone who's played a ton of them.

I've even found single-player Pokemon to be pretty interesting gameplay-wise as long as I keep myself from grinding.

To be fair I'm not exactly sure how to play the game. Some people say the vanilla game is too easy to take advantage of the battle system's mechanics while others who played the vanilla version will say the battle system was one of their favorite parts of the game (which is a contrast to a ton of other JRPGs that people say they're playing DESPITE the battles).

If so many people had fun with it then there has to be SOMETHING there, right?
>>
>>3710986
Grandia's never hard, but the mechanic of interrupting opponents' turns kept me engaged in the battles the whole way through.

I figured it out but I absolutely didn't expect this particular thing to work. I put "iso" after the question mark labeled "default track type extension" and it extracted a file that was just the name of the original file but with a "so" at the end - not an extension, it had NO extension. So I removed the "so" and gave it an ".iso" extension myself and suddenly Epsxe accepted it.

Thanks for the recommendation >>3710960

That said I kinda want to play the vanilla version now just to see what the developers originally released and what everyone else experienced at first.

What is the patch meant to do?

I've been going through Grandia 1 for about 25 hours now, I didn't think it needed one. What is it meant to do?
>>
Is the Saturn version the same?

worse

it really isn't that hard
>>

Redux is pretty much just a hard mode mod. Grandia is a rather legendarily easy game, so people made a hard mode mod to get even more enjoyment out of it, considering its battle system is still the tits to this day.

>>3711257
It's better; better loading time, effects, sound, etc. It was the console it was made for in the first place, after all.
>>
>>3711426
Really? I recall getting my shit pushed in when you crash the wedding and when you take on the three commander ladies back to back.

Or maybe I was just underleveled
>>
>>3711450
>Or maybe I was just underleveled
Basically that.

Grandia was my first real RPG, and holy shit did I get stuck a lot on it. That was mostly because I was underleveled though. If you sit down and do a few hours of good grinding (and grab water magic for one of your characters early on, and grind that) then you can end up not having to grind for the entire rest of the game. One of the best mechanics I've ever seen in a game.

Hell, you could do it without grinding, certainly, if you use the tactics in the game properly; move to evade certain attacks, endure certain attacks before the enemy strikes, take out the cohorts of a boss early on, use a weaker move to cancel a boss' more powerful move, etc etc. There's so many potential tactics which go into the game. I agree it's not really as easy as most people say it is, but it is one of the less grindy RPGs out there if you play your cards right.

Mount the image and then rip it in the format you require.

This thread is really starting to make me think I'll enjoy vanilla Grandia just fine the way I normally play JRPGs. I mean look at what this dude is saying:
>>3711624
>>3711426
>Grandia is a rather legendarily easy game
>If you sit down and do a few hours of good grinding
This is really, really silly.

Even hard games like the original US release of DMC 3 can be made easier if you grind for healing items. I never do that in JRPGs and I've not done it since I was in my early teens & thought Maplestory was cool.

Hell, I don't even fight every normal enemy encounter; if it's something I've already fought and I don't feel like it, then I'll just run away.
>>3711450
What does "underleveled" even mean? Being "underleveled" is often the best way to have fun with a JRPG as long as it has an alright battle system.
>>3711876
>>3711287
Using what? I've tried with various programs and it didn't work.

I mean I really don't understand the concept of "this JRPG is too easy after you grind for a few hours".

Dragon Quest-derived JRPGs are designed so that anyone can beat them if they grind enough. It's always going to be up to you if you're going to play it to relax and watch your characters get stronger, or avoid powerleveling to have fun with whatever light strategy the party customization, resource management, pre-battle planning and in-battle decisions might offer.

I prefer to do the latter now, I used to prefer the former when I was younger. Both are pretty valid but it's very weird to go out of your way to grind for HOURS and then say "this is too easy".
>>
>>3710876
Never played Grandia before. Am I better off sticking with vanilla, and revisiting the game using this patch should I get the urge to replay it? Or is Redux the way to go?
>>
>>3711981
I've been trying to decide the same thing too but from what I'm reading ITT I'm really starting to think that the original game is fine if you just avoid grinding and run from the occasional battle if you're bored of fighting that enemy. >>3711957

Or you know what, I might play through both and compare how the original devs released the game vs. what fans thought would be harder/better/etc - might be good analysis fodder and I have fun doing that (and also get Patreon hipster welfare for it so that helps)

To do that I'll still have to figure out how to make an ISO effectively patch it after I'm done with the vanilla version, though. I dunno what the good disc burning/ISO-making applications are these days I'm just using some old version of Daemon Tools because that's what I've used for a decade.
>>
>>3711957

You didn't even read a word I said. This is why under 18s shouldn't be allowed on /vr/. Acting like you know something about a game you've never played is /v/tard-tier. Now fuck off back there, where you belong.
>>
ppfomatic works on imgs and bins. The problem you're encountering is that you think your HP should be going up, when that's not included in the patch (3.1/3.0). Go to a save point and choose **HINT**. That will tell you if the patch was applied or not.
>>

you're right, sorry for assuming you were the first guy after reading only the first part of your post
