I missed half of the story because the audio mixing is feces and ambiance plays way louder than the dialogue.

Ignore these guys. The PC version ditched the situational music and has less music and more repetition as a result. The PS1 and DC versions are the way to go. The DC version has slightly different physics that make one particular moment kind of a bitch, but it's not that bad.
