Sonic has never exactly been bug-free, but Sonic 2 is broken as hell. It's like they never even playtested the game with all 7 emeralds. It starts with the seventh special stage where it seems as though they gave up designing special stages and just placed rings and bombs at random. Then when you beat it and get the 7th emerald, so many things break when you're Super Sonic, and you can't avoid turning into Super Sonic since you transform after just a single jump. I've beaten Sonic 1 with all emeralds, and I've beaten S3&K with all emeralds. I've beaten Sonic 2, and I've got all the emeralds, but I gave up trying to do both at the same time after the fourth or fifth game breaking bug brought on by Super Sonic.

I've played the game many times since the early 90's, and I've never gotten all the emeralds. So I can see why that wasnt very much tested.

Indeed, I always thought unleashing Super Sonic with a jump was pretty stupid.

Since you got 50 rings, what do you do? No jump till the boss? Pretty hard for a one-button platformer... or rush hoping you'll get more rings than you lose. Great.

S3 was a little less crappy, adding the transformation to a double-jump. But since double-jump creates the instashield... fucked again.

This. The special stages were cool as fuck when I was a kid, but nowadays I feel they just break the flow of the game, and Super Sonic is entirely unnecessary. I never even bother getting the emeralds anymore. Maybe I'll do the special zones when the mood strikes me, but outside of that... eh.

Sonic 2 Is definitely one of the better MD games out there. My personal favourites are Golden Axe, Streets of Rage, Burning Force and Space Harrier 2

For a safe bet I'd say Shinobi III. The only complaint you can make about that game is that it's pretty easy, but that's mostly because of all the options that they give the the player, which is part of what makes it fun.

For personal taste I'd say Ecco and Herzog Zwei.

There's also the Wing Fortress bug. If you're super when running to the end of the fortress in the "cutscene" at the end of the level, at the point where Sonic's supposed to stop and see Robotnik getting away, he runs straight off and falls to his death instead.

There are also quite a few areas in Hill Top Zone where you can fall too fast for the camera to keep up with you as Super Sonic so you hit the bottom of the screen and die.

Both fantastic choices. I would also add Comix Zone and Beyond Oasis as Genesis greats.

I had it happen too many times. Also other random crashes, such as sometimes freezing when you hit one of the pink dinosaur things from Hill Top Zone as Super Sonic. For the record I played on an actual NTSC console. I have heard that Sonic Compilation/Classics/whatever it was called fixed a lot of the horrible bugs in Sonic 2 though.
