Controlling a large squad is more fun than a small party. Plus there are more elements to a battle in S/RPGs, like terrain, weather, etc.

They can be. The majority of them fail to actually make positioning important, though, and end up just being traditional RPGs with slower-paced battles.

I tend to prefer them. Simply because, at least in the decent ones, individual battles have some narrative value and are important setpieces themselves.

Compared to the typical jrpg which is chock full of random encounters that mean nothing.
