Talk about obscure, the company behind Halcyon went bankrupt days before the official release. It sold for $2500 in 1985 money and that's with the company taking a big financial hit with every console produced. While there are a good hundred of these things circulating due to store owners keeping their limited stock of consoles, they may have never officially sold a single unit.

It only had 2 games, a meh football simulator and one great game, the definitive version of Thayer's Quest.

>>3669626

Apples only Video Game console. It had an excellent port of the first two Marathon games if my memory serves me correctly, and it even had that awful American made FMV Gundam game. Interestingly, it was literally a Macintosh Performa 6300 CD in a different case, and when some games booted up it would show the desktop for Mac System 7 for a split second. Rumor has it that you can even softmod it to boot into the Mac System 7 normally and install standard Mac games on it.

I wonder, are clones ever as accurate as the original FC/NES? Even clones made today?

Might just get one of these $10 for NES games, instead of playing on shitty Android, though I doubt most of the games included are in English.

If I'm not mistaken, aren't those cannibal consoles though? With bits of hardware recovered from old NESs?

I can't be assed to check but the only Famiclones being made that are 100% accurate are South Korean machines like the Super Bus?

The Analogue NT was a limited-run cannibal console. The Analogue NT Mini and the AVS are high-end clones (FPGA-developed).

Almost all Famiclones to-day (not couting boutique things like AVS and NT) are based NOAC based (NES on a Chip). They are tolerable if you just want some actual hardware and are insanely cheap (and legal now too). The only truly accurate Famiclones were 80s-90s clones that used actual CPUs and PPUs that were compatible with the Famicom. Usually they are totally discrete, straight up hardware cloens rather than a glop-top pre-fab design. It's cheaper to buy an actual Famicom than those older clones though, they're pretty sought after. That said, you can grab a Yobo for like %15 and it will play almost everything at a passable level and can use real NES controllers which is nice.

So this here is called brown box and it's what most people consider to be the first video game console made. It was never released for public but the pieces inside eventually made the magnavox odyssey. Atari stole pong from this system.

Is it equal to an NES/Famicom or is it just a high quality approximation?
>>
>>3675941
The NT has real PPU and CPU, so it's the real deal, but grossly, grossly over-priced. Comically so. The AVS is FPGA based, so it's a full-on clone. It has generally solid reviews but I guess it has some actual design issues, YouTube has a ton of videos about it. USGamer did the best overview and stream.
>>
>>3675952
That price point isn't a lot for me. Fuck it, I'll buy one.
>>
>>3676063
The original models with real PPU and CPU are sold out forever afaik; the new 'mini' version is going to be FPGA based like the AVS is, just a heads up.

>>
>>3674892

I think it's the convenience of not having to get it modded, or in some cases a 'native' digital video out.

Try this on for size. Came out in '94 to surpass the PC-Engine but NEC consciously decided to put no 3D hardware inside because they didn't think it was good enough yet. Had a ton of ecchi games and died in four years. Apparently it was very expensive.

Lemmie show ya'll the "Action Max" system. I'm not sure I'd describe it as a video game console, per se, but they sure as hell tried to market it as one.

This thingie was meant to be hooked up to a television with a VHS player. A number of VHS tapes were made for the console, and they were the "games" for the system. It also had a lightgun. The gun was the only controller it had, and was the whole selling point of the system.

When you played a tape the movie had "targets" on the bad guys of our story. Shoot lightgun at targets. Pretty simple. Action Max had a red LCD counter on the top of the unit that would keep your score. (Not so dissimilar from the way the "Captain Power & The Soldiers of the Future" toys would interact with the weekly television show, if you're old enough to remember that one. Except that the bad guys there could actually "shoot back" at the toys, an extra interaction Action Max didn't have, but I digress.)

If I recall correctly, it only went up to 99 so I suppose you could argue that you'd "beaten" a tape/game if you could get the score to roll over.

I never owned one of these stinky piles of shit, but my best friend growing up did. Funnily enough, his father got WAY more mileage out of the thing than we ever did. We had Atari 2600's and a Commodore 64 between us. No contest there.

For the truly trivia minded, Action Max here was the brainchild of the "Worlds of Wonder" company. These were the people that brought you Teddy Ruxpin, Lazer Tag, a slew of other eighties-era toys, and were the original distributors of the NES in North America.\

Anyway, I vividly remember "Pops Ghostly" as one of the tapes we watched his dad play through regularly, although his favorite one was a sort of "Top Gun / Iron Eagle" inspired fighter jet shooting movie, the name of which escapes me after all these years.

The Action Max. Weird stuff from my youth.
