Nearest-Neighbor scaling can hurt some people's eyes, especially for extended play sessions.
I prefer filterless, but I do use filters on text so it's less of a pain to read them.

I don't think blurry linear filters look especially good for Doom but I don't feel like making a fuss about it.

I'm having an absolute bitch of a time getting custom weapons to appear in GZDB for Heretic. Is there something obvious I am missing that is different between heretic and doom for importing?
>>
>>3666430
I'm using tyrutils with necros compiling GUI frontend, pretty sure its all set up according to
https://quakewiki.org/wiki/Getting_Started_Mapping#Time_to_compile.21

It does compile, and creates a batch file in the id1/maps folder, but I get the "couldn't spawn server maps" error
>>
>>3668208
make sure you have a doom ed number assigned to each weapon? does a Decorate category show up in the things in GZDB? its usually at the bottom of all the other categories.

Usually custom weapons and monsters etc show up in the "decorate" category unless they're been specified to show up in another category by the weapon or monster makers

I played HL Tower, and I quite liked the concept of making small maps designed to be floors of a tower. The stealth themed Japanese office showed that you can still make the level look good in Gold Source, it just takes some quality texture work.
>>
>>3668265
I never played it personally, but I watched a video of it, and it seemed like a really cool concept, having a team of modders each make their own levels to add into a pack. It's a wonder it never happened more often.

>>3668274
I didn't have your problem, but I couldn't compile my map because the folder name has spaces. Rename the folder(s) and maybe the filename without spaces and try again
>>
>>3668274
Found the issue. The batch file isn't putting quotation marks around the file path, so it's dropping everything after the first space.

>copy MY FIRST MAP.bsp C:\QUAKE EDITING\quakespasm-0.92.1_win64\id1\maps

It's making it to C:\QUAKE and dropping everything past it.

Best thing to do is rework your directories to not include spaces (C:\QuakeEditing\quakespasm\id1\maps and firstmap instead of MY FIRST MAP) and don't put spaces in your filenames.
>>
>>3668289
The map itself compiles fine once you've got the file paths set up properly, by the way.

Hello, klutz caco writer here.

The "top ten" aren't ranked. Some of the panel will have their personal preferences, but the cacos are usually arranged according to how they measure up to the sidebar material for length. Tech Gone Bad is a special case, though; it'd have gone at the start or the end all the same.

It was pretty good, invoking a similar oldschool feel with something a little bit extra, like the demo for Nihility, but it's not AS good as Nihility, and I feel that Bloodstain, for instance, which was a runner up, was overall a more enjoyable and meaty experience.

It's lossless only, sorry, unless someone's invented a lossless MP3 packer. I'm the guy making PortaDOOM, so I need this tool to bring down the final download size as much as possible without compromising the WADs. If anybody is aware of any lossless optimization tools for other common DOOM formats, such as WAV, MID, OGG that'd be a huge help.

Despite being sort of the "standard" gun trough the game,it still feels powerfull and never becomes useless.

So how do you lot feel about Jupiter Hell? Anyone back it or excited for it?

It certainly looks interesting on premise, like the various sectors on the moons, and I'd be interested to see what the dev could do with an expanded and original roster of enemies, weapons, and classes. I was pleasantly surprised by how fun DoomRL was and I think the dev could do a good job with a spiritual successor, though I think I'd rather just buy the game when it comes out/has more details shown. It's got $10k to go and three days left, Kickstarters have a trend of getting tons of funding in the last few days but 10k is a lot, so it's hard to say if it'll get funded or not.

Great game bogged down by what I expect were design choices forced on Raven by Activision.

For example, some leftover dialogue between the Nazis indicate that Blazkowicz was supposed to look like in RTCW originally, but was changed at the last minute for some reason.

In any case, the weapon and enemy selection is definitely a lot more interesting than in The New Order, and the Veil powers also mix up the gameplay quite a bit despite the health regen.
There's also quite a bit of exploration going on in the hub level, with multiple choices of where to go next at times, which is to be expected from Raven I suppose.

And you collect Tomes of Power from Heretic/Hexen, which is cool.

Ok so I want to make a Hexen style map with custom weapons and monsters added. I don't know how to create or edit classes in hexen but I found a Hexen weapons for doom was that works well. So I'm thinking I'll just import textures and monsters into doom and go from there.

What I'd really like is the Clerics hud with the Wraithverge pieces since I plan to have that as the final weapon.

Am I doing this the hard way? Is creating a class that can use any weapon easier? Google brought up nothing so I feel screwed

I actually quite liked it despite a lot of it's flaws and quirks. The gunplay is good, the veil powers are interesting and fun, weapon upgrades are nice, the design and aesthetics are pretty good, and boss battles are not bad, the final boss is even quite good and hard.

I REALLY liked the Mauser rifle, with the damage upgrades and the bayonet, I used it as one of my main weapons, a thundering boom that drops most mooks in one shot from a long distance, and a bayonet that's good for slitting throats (especially in veil time, where you can easily slit the throat of like 5 nazis before they can even react).

I absolutely didn't like the regen health (the lack of turkey dinners and medkits is a serious flaw), and levels, while featuring a bit of fun exploration and some treasure hunting, were ultimately quite linear. Story wasn't as interesting as in Return, and the title of the game should obviously have been Wolfenstein: Black Sun
Overall, I think in many aspects, it's almost as good as Return, having a strong edge in gunplay, but having a series of smaller flaws against it.

I wouldn't mind seeing Raven having a second go at making a Wolf game, maybe they could remake Return To Castle Wolfenstein, I'd love to see that with modern graphics and 09's gunplay.

A lot of people will say it's because they don't like Mark, others will say it's overrated(which I kind of agree too). But for me personally, I think it was just a disappointment. The trailer looked really cool, and made it seem like it was gonna be regular Brutal Doom, but without the retarded bullshit like voice acting, fatalities and ear rape. But then I actually played it and it was basically Doom 64 with a Ketchup patch. The new deaths are just slight variations of the regular death animations, the nightmare imps are a pain in the ass, and the sprite work for the revenant is laughable. The weapons are satisfying to use for the most part, but the BFG doing splash damage is just total bullshit. The map effects are really nice, but also rape my FPS into single digits at times. Over all, it's just Doom 64 but with a new coat of paint. And Doom 64 wasn't even as good as the other games to begin with, so I didn't even bother playing through it again but with more gore.

Yeah, Thy Flesh Consumed came out at 1995, after Doom II: Hell on Earth, two years after the first game. It definitely feels out of place and is overall is at a different pace. All I can really tell you is to keep trying and trying since it only gets harder.

Seriously, the Romero maps (E4M2: Perfect Hatred and E4M6: Against Thee Wickedly) are pretty challenging on a first blind playthrough.

E4M1: Hell Beneath is pretty short though, it's not as long or tedious as you think. Honestly when I did it, I couldn't believe how abruptly it ended.

>>
hey guys im new to doommodding and im wondering if theres a sourceport that doesn't have the filename length limit for sprites?

barring that, what's the maximum number of sprites capable in a modern sourceport without resorting to super hackish development practices
>>
>>3670169

You picked what kind of sound card your computer had, and then DOOM played the music using your sound card. Simple.

Most people of the time had Sound Blaster cards, so most source ports have support for OPL synth emulation to mimic the sound of such a card. If you want to hear the music as most people of the time would've heard it, go with that.

However, the music was composed with a Roland SC-55 midi synthesizer which has a very different sound to it, and I'd consider it superior and arguably the definitive version of the soundtrack.
There's no real emulation options for it, but there is a set of music packs that were made by recording a SC-55 playing the music that can be used with compatible source ports (e.g. G/ZDoom) that can be found at this dude's site: http://sc55.duke4.net/

Ok so all I really need now to start my hexen megawad is the main weapon. I *could* spend weeks learning decorate and prying my eyes over why things don't work but I'd honestly rather just hire one of you guys to do it so I can go back to the fun part which is MAPPING. Hell I bet some of you could do this in 5 minutes...

I want the Gauntlets of the Necromancer in hexen, with range similar to the other melee weapons and no longer locking the camera on the enemy it's hitting. Give it a 1.5 normal damage with a small lifedrain and it's alternate fire will raise a corpse back to life to fight for you.

Bonus if you give the alt fire a unique ammo (a simple skull or green flame would be perfect for the sprite)

Any takers for this job? Not sure what it's worth but I'm open to suggestion.

Quake has a bug where you can lose your runes when the game boots you back to the start of a map after you die. It's good practice to save at the start of the level and load that save when you die instead of relying on the game's pseudo-autosave function. I think the Quakespasm devs are aware of this bug but it seems they can't address it without breaking something else.

The usual argument against buying the original Doom games is that nobody on the original team works at id Software anymore, so your money would likely end up going to either Bethesda or Zenimax.

If you download a source port and want to use it, you also need the core game files. Thankfully both Doom and Doom 2 store their data in one file each (or IWAD) that are only mere megabytes, which in turn probably makes them some of the easiest games to pirate.

Regenerating health in modern shooters that have big open areas and hitscan enemies is a must
It was extremely tedious quicksaving after every enemy you kill when your health was at 5%, this is a huge problem in shooters like return to castle wolfenstein, call of duty, requiem avenging angel and such
This never happened in corridor shooters like doom or quake

doom levels are compact, character is fast and it takes like 30 seconds to backtrack and get from 20% to 100% back again
not to mention soul spheres
not to mention the fact it's projectile based shooter and you can get through level with minimal damage
>>
>>3670803
As far as hitscan in old-style shooters go, regenerating health up to a low threshold like 10% to help stand a chance against weak and stray hitscan could work I guess? I remember Quake 4 restoring a small amount of health up to a certain point when loading a save if your health was very low.

Insted of using Doom 64 EX, or even Absolution TC as a base, he took GZDoom64 which is inferior, has screwed up colored lighting in many areas (which he did not fix) and has many other screw ups like missing decor and such. Also added monsters are bs frankensprited from Blood, and the contrast between them and the rest is grating.

Chainsaw uses ammo (for no reason, screws with some encounters that were supposed to be chainsaw-heavy), adds new weapon (for no reason), attempt at making every weapon sort-of-universal, which makes them loose their niche (same problem as regular BD). Not always a good thing that.

DOSBox can not limit its FPS through means other than cycle limiting, and Cycle limiting makes you stutter in one places while your FPS goes through the roof in the others.

If your FPS in Blood are above 60 or 75 (don't remembr), physics go out of whack - like on rotating platform, collsion box may lag behind the platform itself, so the platform becomes transparent with invisible platform tagging along (hapens rarely). Another quirk is that some actions are FPS-bound, like Hand monsters choke-hold. If you have too much FPS it will choke you in milliseconds, and to shake it off you have to press USE fast. How fast - Depends on your FPS.

Lots of other stuff. Also mouse, even with BMOUSE driver behaves weird and floaty.

The lopers are poorly programmed and overpowered, and the super troopers are bullet sponges that are just boring to fight, the zombies were boring too. Very inconsistent with how much health the game gives you, especially on the later levels where you have to save after every enemy you kill. The game doesn't feel like it's progressing anywhere until you suddenly reach the end. Most fun parts were definetly fighting the regular soldiers. Other than that I just can't put my finger on what the game is missing, it feels rushed
>>
>>3671230
I really liked how they made the kick useful.

But fuck Olaric. That guy totally ruined the game.
>>
>>3671241
huh? that guy was easy as fuck just strafe around and don't shoot him while he does that soul thing
>>
>>3671243
The noise he makes when he summons the ghost spooked me. And how the screen shakes when he's near...
>>
>>3671238
anyone think it's weird how unceremoniously the lopers showed up? Literally here's some frankenstein motherfucker with a tesla generator instead of legs so he has to hop around on his arms, like there's no dramatization or input from anyone around that, they show up and now you're going to have to fight them
>>
GUYS I havent played Doom since Febrary, whats the hottest new wads right now

because it's true, shit level design, enemies with retarded A.I and movements so sluggish it's like you turned a cheat code on or something, they get stuck around every obstacle and are poorly animated, whole game has that vomit yellow/green colour that's really nauseating to look at, all of the weapons are like peashooters
>that pussy ass explosion from rockets or grenade

>>
>>3671334

I'm not fond of Doom 3's monsters, they all look too similar. The Hell Knight and the Demon being the only exceptions.

Finished it yesterday, it's pretty damn good. Never gonna replace the original, but at least, it's worthy of the name.

Fun as fuck. Shooting a demon in the face with the SSG really makes an impact, the model is all bloody and shit, so it really feels like you're turning his face into paste.

>>3671348
I don't remember that guy in the game.
But my point still stands :
>same colour than all the others demons

What if the majority of demons in Doom 3 weren't actually demons, but zombified/possessed Martians?

>multiplayer awards are just AeonDM and the 32-in-24 of this year
>No level master in that list
That's a shame, level master (an old as shit skulltag mod) was updated recently and i played it and it was rad as fuck. At least the multiplayer awards this year weren't as dead or shady as the ones in 2015 like chaoscorectf winning an award like wtf that pack was bad, DBAB was good tho.

I never really had issues with chainsaw ammo, you find a lot of them. I don't think I ever had ammo trouble period in Doom 64 anyway, though.
