is there a worse mechanic than autoscrolling sections?
limited continues
>>3658759
Yeah probably
>>3658759
Completely disagree. This encourages mastery of a game instead if just tanking through early levels.
I've got various Castlevania passwords for both late levels with few lives/continues and earlier levels but with more so I can have a stronger base to launch from so to speak, and it encourages me to replay the early levels and get better at them. (Amusingly, CV1 actually does have infinite continues)
Sire for modern 16 hour+ games it might be a bit obscene, but for a 45 mintute side scroller it's great.

I like autoscrolling
I like water levels
I like the non-sidescrolling levels in Contra games

Escort missions.

This.

Anything that doesn't hold your hand, walk you through it, and give you a trophy at the end.

Unskippable cutscenes. Conversely cutscenes that can't be paused either
Password screens that force you to reset the game to get out of them
Tank controls in non-mech games.

>I like the non-sidescrolling levels in Contra games
People think these are bad?
>>3660317
Not actual people, but posters on this board do.
>>3660309
Or games with an ending thats just a variant of THE END on a black screen and you cant do anything and youre forced to reset the console
Im looking at you, Paper Mario
>>3660581
This. And Paper Mario is a perfect example. After all the hours put into games like that, a simple message of "do you want to save?" after it would be nice with maybe even a simple icon next to your file or anything really, like having the option to replay the bosses. New Game +'s are the best.
>>3658747
Rubberbanding.
Fuck every racing game with CPU-opponents.
>>3660317
They're not bad, per say, but it's just that the sidescrolling levels are so damn good that there's really no reason to break them up.
>>3660646
You're my new best friend.
How about "secret controller code just to enable continue feature"?
>At the game over screen hold UP, A,B
I had a copy of this i nthe late 80s (used) so even if the code was in the maunal I never knew it.
Fatigue and frustration would set in long before you "GET GOOD!" as this is one of the hardest NES games out there. The hidden continue feature was a godsend when I finally learned of it.
>>3660865
Let's see
SMB1 had this
Rad Racer had this
Ghosts 'n' Goblins had this in Japan, which is just plain evil
I'm on the fence, maybe it's supposed to be a "cheat" but some games are improved by it for sure
Boss Battles.
>>3660965
>I'm on the fence, maybe it's supposed to be a "cheat" but some games are improved by it for sure
Certain games are so hard that the players feel cheated and they actually start to get worse after repeated failures. If they struggle to clear level 38 after a dozen failed attempts they start playing erratically an on the next run they will fuck up on level 23, and then ragequit.
A continue is absolutely not a cheat in cases like these. They let the player focus on the task at hand. Considering this is a puzzle game (with time limit) there is no need to replay all lower levels 1000 times just to get back to the current puzzle you are stuck with. That isn't value added time.
Level 38 for those who care:

>>3660972
But why?
>>3661034
No it's still a fuckin' cheat. Even if it's a reasonable cheat it's still a cheat.
That said I've never gotten past like 20 something in Solomon's Key so maybe I should shut the fuck up
>>3661129
Cheating is great. Cheating can help you learn and doesn't prevent you from playing it the right way later. I recommend cheating whenever you feel like it.
>>3661070
Usually the entire level has similar mechanics, like platforming, then you get to the end and you have to do something totally different, like memorize a bunch of attacks and exactly where to stand. Its always dodging fire, then attacking when there is an open spot. Usually it doesn't increase your skills at the rest of game.
>>3661070
It's an old meme, he's not serious
>>3658759
why is it bad to ask the player to get good at the game? i prefer starting a game over than playing the same 10 seconds over and over again if its too hard
>>3660317
they suck. thats why hard corps is the best contra. no gay overhead or faux-3d shit
Every single game should have unlimited continues.
Fuck off if you don't agree.
>>3660581
Those are the best, though. It's good to have proper closure.
>>3661192
>not retro
But that's something good about Undertale, it goes out of its way to bring closure as well as give you the option of just fucking the world's shit up.
>>3661174
Fuck you you skilless faggot
Some fames need it and some fames are weakened by it
>>3658747
is there a way to emulate the game boy just like this?
>>3661129
>That said I've never gotten past like 20 something in Solomon's Key so maybe I should shut the fuck up
To put it in perspective, people making the youtube videos on solomons keys use saved states on their emulators and are cheating non-stop. The guy who made the following video readily admitted to using saved states during the level and claimed that it still took 40 tries to clear this one stage (and this is only level 31).
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eyajcGChk8I
The later levels cause many people to give up even if they are abusing saved states. Dozens upon dozens of attempts per level with multiple saved states as they gradually make their way through, only to realize they didn't do enough prep-time earlier in the stage and have to start over.
Even with blatant saved state cheating people cannot beat this game. Now imagine doing it with only 3 lives (plus a few that you earn) and no continues.
The continue code is a necessity in this game and even then it stops working after level 41. The last 7 levels you are on your own. Good luck with that.
>>3661203
retroarch i'd imagine, seems to be the go to emulation for everything
>>3658747
Wind pushing you
>>3661202
why even have lives if you have limited continues
or why even have continues if you have lives
lives and continues is bullshit that needed to stay the fuck in the arcade and should never have been brought to home consoles
>>3661340
Plenty of games only have one or the other anyways, what's your argument here?
>>3661340
>Score resetting
>Denied the true ending
>Unlockables for 1CC
>>3658904
... If someone wants to master a game that's their decision. Limited continues are horrible and make games unfun if you have trouble with one or two parts out of the game.
>>3661340
If you put the same effort into practicing games as you did crying, you wouldn't need any continues.
Ice levels.
>>3661258
>Wind pushing you and then stopping
>Horrible spring board mechanics
I'm looking at you, Super Mario Brothers
>Nemesis games give you a 99 lives option
>If doesn't matter because you die at all on the final level you may as well just turn the Gameboy off
Why are Gradius games so shit
>>3660965
I always viewed it as cheating. If the devs wanted you to continue they would've made it an explicit option. Plus with some games like SMB and Rad Racer they're such short games anyway it would be shameful to use the code. I mean RR is only 8 races, c'mon.
>>3658747
stealth sections
>>3661554
>Why are Gradius games so shit
Because quarters, doesn't really excuse the GB version though.
>>3662837
Well Rad Racer is a mindfuck because they put the code in the manual. So who do I believe?
>>3662859
OK I think you got one for real, I can't think of a single good stealth section in any game where it's not a primary mechanic
>>3661340
A lot of games take you back to the start of the current world after losing a continue.
>>3661554
you can recover, the rating drops when you loose power-ups so it gets slightly easier. i had no problem recovering in last stage of first loop and for casuals there is a konami code.
>>3661451
I mean you can master anything but if there's no reason to it's kind of pointless.
Games with limited lives lock later levels and abilities behind a skill wall so that you earn something for your time.
What would be the fucking point of a 45 minute arcade game if you could just tank your way through without having to learn the levels and mechanics? Just to see the preatty graffix?
>>3663428
>What would be the fucking point of a 45 minute arcade game if you could just tank your way through without having to learn the levels and mechanics? Just to see the preatty graffix?
that's pretty much how 99% of people play mame. i'm glad console ports were often sending those cucks to the start of the level until they get good or get lucky.
>>3659181
jesus, i bet you born in the 7th generation.
>>3658759
> Blaster Master

FUUUUUUUUUUU
>>3658747
The $1000 "retro game" mechanic where you pay that much for Little Samson and get 1/3 the levels of Mega Man 2.
>>3658951
What's with the top one? Even when you run out of magnet beams you can just get more one screen below.
