I can't really say which is the best since I only have played that one and have to actually play the others, but it is pretty great. Kind of funny how it is like Resident Evil: 1 game begins in a mansion and others differ from this, hell, it's even released in the same year.

I remember this game being mildly controversial and perhaps even having a warning sticker in advertisements/on the box because of "Satanic themes" or something like that. My friend owned it and I thought it was a pretty cool and unusual idea, setting traps for invaders, but my young autistic self couldn't figure out the point of putting traps anywhere but right inside the main door. Don't the heroes always have to come in that way, or did we not play far enough?

Those merchant invaders were weird, they'd throw a stream of random ass shit at you but when you got close enough you could buy from them..

The original has some unique features that I enjoy, but overall I'm much more fond of some of the sequels. They improve the basic gameplay mechanics significantly and have much more interesting and interactive environments.

It's a little surprising that Satan didn't receive a name change during localization.

As for trap placement: enemies don't always start at the doorway, it's often impractical to hit them right where they enter, and foes generally aren't going to be defeated by a single trap anyway.

Loved the story and atmosphere. Pretty intense themes as well. The sequels are better mechanically but with the exception of Kagero 1 and 2 the quality of the story and darkness of the themes sure haven't survived to this age.

Bought Deception IV on name alone despite my reservations. Fun gameplay in an arcadey sort of way but the intensity of the dark elements have been lost entirely, making it hard to play.

I think Darkside Princess/Nightmare Princess is the best game in the series by a huge margin, but it is a shame that it can't match the atmosphere of Deception 1 or 2. The plot also isn't all that great: there's nothing wrong with the premise, but it just isn't executed very well. It doesn't help that all the antagonists die immediately after being introduced, and thus receive no character development whatsoever.

I do like the protagonist a whole lot better than Reina or Alicia, though.

The sequels have better gameplay and graphics. But the first game had a number of features that were never used in the later games that still makes the first the most appealing.

In the sequels you can't create monsters, or make additions to the castle (or wherever), the rpg elements were downplayed, and the satanic elements are gone. I also preffered the first person perspective.

Anyone have an idea why the last Brave has the same name as you? Is he supposed to be your ancestor?

I would miss those features more if they had been implemented well. The monsters were cool conceptually, but they end up just being simplistic damage-dealing spells. Customizing your lair ends up being almost purely a cosmetic feature, because there just isn't really any difference between the various rooms and hallways. Nothing you can create will be anywhere near as interesting or interactive as the environments found in the later games.

Don't get me wrong, I would almost always prefer to see a game's weaker features be improved rather than stripped out, but those things added so little to the game for me that I really wasn't upset to see them go.

They're downplayed, but not gone entirely. At least not in all of the sequels.
