I don't remember it being based on that, I remember it being something like where Mario was standing relative to the box (Mario standing past left half of block -> mushroom goes right, and vice versa)

i beat it in like 6th grade and i distinctly remember the mushroom going the opposite of the direction mario is looking, and 1-up mushrooms going the same direction. every time. but im playing in on wii from the online store, and its not consistent. im panicking
