What does /vr/ think about Faxanadu?
>Faxanadu
More like Faxanadon't
>>3655717
I hate that the intro ends on a strange note
The music is cool.
>>3655750
Hahah, very well.
The x is pronounced like a z
I liked Xanadu more. Faxanadu was too simplified.
>>3655717
had some very catchy music.
the game overall felt a lot like adventures of link
>>3655796
Xs only get pronounced like Zs if they're the first letter in the word
and fuck off with the "b-but it's supposed to stand for Famicom Xanadu", I don't wanna hear that bullshit
most underated game of all time
great graphics, godly music, fun gameplay, great pacing good worldbuulding
superior to zelda

>Xs only get pronounced like Zs if they're the first letter in the word
Before you go any further with this retarded bait, let me point out that the game's kana title uses a Z sound:
ファザナドゥ
(fa-za-na-du)
So it is indeed pronounced fah-zah-nah-doo
>>3656369
Because it's Famicom Xanadu. Xanadu in this case referring the the game Xanadu, named after the poem Xanadu in turn referring to the town of Shangdu ( 上都) in China.

The Japanese syllable system is extremely limited and English pronunciation rules are all over the place. It's really nothing to think too deeply about.
It is a very satisfying game to play through.
Not as hard links adventure but it has better RPG elements for a side scrolling action game.
>>3656403
What RPG elements? Your XP have no influence aside from determining the money you restart with.
Famzamidon't is one of my favorite family cornputer games
>>3656410
Grinding for money to buy equipment that ups your stats is an RPG mechanic
>>3656410
The shops and XP system. it's like calling river city ransom a beat-em-up RPG. by 1980s standards that was an acceptable term for this type of game.
The game appears on most 8-bit RPG lists for a reason.
>>3656403
It truly is superior to links adventure in many ways. However I found the hit boxes to be bullcrap in some spots and it gets a little bit to ambitious for its own good at times.
>>3656415
>Grinding for money to buy equipment that ups your stats is an RPG mechanic
Each gear upgrade actually felt like it made a difference too. I remember it was always exciting to reach a new shop, and at best had enough money to buy a single mid tier item in it.
"time to grind!"
>>3656420
Compare it to Xanadu where you create your character by raising various stats and then gain experience in all sorts of weapons, armors, shields, spells and items.
All while platforming and outmaneuvering enemies.
The only reason that game doesn't appear in 8 bit RPG lists is because it was never published overseas due to a stupid mistake.
I think it is wonderful. For me the difficulty is perfect.
>>3656447
Xanadu had lovely cover art too. dat ass.
>The only reason that game doesn't appear in 8 bit RPG lists is because it was never published overseas due to a stupid mistake.
I didn't think there was a famicom version even in japan. It was computer only I thought.
>>3656369
your forgetting one thing: the english title isn't written in fucking kana
>>3656453
Famicom couldn't have handled things like multi-directional scrolling so they ended creating Faxanadu with flip screens instead.
Only console that could do it was the Saturn.
But dat ass indeed.
>>3655717
Nello!
Love this game. Its one of the games that felt like a whole piece, like all the elements came together in a single focus (art, music, gameplay, style).
>>3656369
>If you were a real gamer like myself you would know it's pronounced Sūpā Mario Wārudo
the Legend of Xanadu I & II translations are nearly complete
>>3655717
I love how bizarre the colour palette is.... and the enemy design too.
>>3656637
And the final boss is the pope.
>>3656475
>Mario
Since "Marry-oh" is a valid pronunciation of that name, is it acceptable to call him that even though the Japanese pronunciation is "Mah-ree-oh"?
>>3656682
I considered changing the Rs to Ls

I basically agree with everything he said.
>>3655717
So I've never played it but I recently got it and looking forward to seeing it. It came in this rental case with the instructions glued to the inside.
I'll take a picture of the inside for you.
>>3658114
Better view of the case
>>3658114
Inside the case, obviously the game too
Wonderful game.
Unfortunately it's kinda like a few other action/rpg games on the NES. Unless you already know what you're doing it can be a fucking drag of grind and getting lost (Battle of Olympus, Castlevania 2 and to a lesser extent Zelda II suffer from this too).
Would highly recommend to play.... probably with a guide the first time around.
>>3658114
Up close view of instructions
On a side note I do have a few other rental cases like this, one is for wrecking crew and they are made by a company called V.I.D. VIDEO SOURCE INC.
>>3658125
I just picked up a half dozen or so of these cases from a friend cleaning out her storage unit. I've never seen instruction cards like that though that's sweet.
>>3658095
Doesn't that guy realize that Faxanadu was made by Hudson? Falcom had nothing to do with it aside from creating Xanadu.
Really fun game. I love how poorly translated it is too.
>this is not enough golds
>don't have negative thoughts
I've been stuck on the fourth (?) area for ages now, where you have to get the elixir to the old guy. Any tips?
