I'm in the process of making a rival site to HG101.

More wiki-elements on games, like advised strategies for hard parts, or ways to play the game.

Multiple people could have articles on the same game instead of the clusterfuck of
>do the whole series faggot.
which leads to a huge descrepancy in article depth and quality on certain games. You may be very familiar with Megaman X 1-3, but then being forced to go in depth on 4-8 means your article quality is shit.

We've had this thread over and over in the last month only.

The consensus seems to always the sameā€¦ The articles are of a varying quality. The pressure to do series of games only hurts it. Sometimes their texts have tons of grammatical mistakes. And the owners of the site are pussies who are sadly getting close to sjws.
>>
>>3648281
While I'm here:

What would you guys want to see in a gaming site?

My plans already
>Forum
>Page dedicated to individual games with basic information like platforms available, version differences, release date, developer, you know the schtick
>articles for the game, including reviews from multiple people, tips/tricks, and whatever other article on the website that's useful or interesting
>low emphasis on News and clickbait
>probably have a streaming tab with "featured streamers" or something like that though since it's a hot topic.
>companion youtube channel and twitch stream
>>
>>3648280
I'm all for it if it's possible to keep politics off the forums. That's what transformed theirs from a fun place to talk to people about a hobby into a hellscape.

Also I used to recommend (shill) the podcast but their new editor/production guy is a tool and between him and Kalata it's going for the same audience that the mother site is trying to appease, so fuck that.

>>
>>3648306
Well I'm all for a forum. As for basic info, I think there are more than enough places for this already.

Personally, what I always wanted to see is a website with good unknown game suggestions outside of the usual top-10 lists which are all best sellers and nothing else. User-made top lists would be great too, ones from big sites are basically useless unless you just discovered that SNES existed a minute ago and you're clueless about what it is.
>>
>>3648306
A way of finding good games without having to make recommendation threads. This is literally my dream.
>>
>>3648306
>low emphasis on News and clickbait

NO emphasis on news and clickbait is a better idea.
>>
>>3648252
I suppose you know more than all of them combined, right?
>>
>>3648354
gog.com has pretty good user lists, the only problem is that they're restricted to games gog sells.
>>
>>3648294

>They screw their writers

they what?
>>
>>3648395
A bunch of the articles are going to be top10's by any other name.

Mostly stuff like
>top whatever JRPG's on the PS1 for beginners
>top whatever action games for Sega Genesis for Experts
>>
>>3648237
Lots of good articles.
>>
>>3648396
Actually, yes I do.
>>

>>

Not sure. Last thing I posted I made fun of how jbackside made a huge deal about putting a trigger warning in one of his shitty walking sim reviews. On Twitter Kurt said it was because I was whining about the forums. Which is funny because this was like a day after he kept threatening to shut them down because of conservatives.

I still think aside from all this he's an ok guy. He's just a huge fucking pussy and probably p-whipped something awful like the aforementioned Jason X.

That's incredibly cringeworthy writing but it doesn't seem to reflect the tone or quality of the majority of articles I've read on there. Honestly, the writing seems to be all over the place - some of the articles are extremely in depth and comprehensive assessments of key qualities like gameplay and differences in port versions. Other articles read more like personal rants or diatribes, and some articles just describe the games at face value by simply listing off plot elements or describing all the levels in game.

The site is totally hit-or-miss if you ask me but the SJW thing is overblown. Except maybe the forums, I've never been on them. My favorite thing they tend to do there is compare different ports and how they stack up to the arcade original.
>>
>>3650673

It's mostly just derboo who seems to be enforcing the SJW mindset. He even has a hateboner for Kamiya because of his role in creating Bayonetta.

>>
>>3650673
I'm more baffled by how the author made up a whole paragraph of bullshit about a game with barely one bit of substantial information about it. Why would I even bother reading when quick googling would yield more info than this load of shit?

I don't even care what they wrote. It could've been a load of dick jokes instead of an ad-lib rant about feminism. The result is pretty much the same, it's just wasting readers' time, with 0 effort put into writing. When others do real workā€”like get their facts straight, compile excerpts from old interviews and interesting facts from little-known sources into the article, and then meticulously compare all the portsā€”, that author seemingly gave absolutely no fuck about readers and the game at all.

Image database of everything from box art, screen caps, developer art, pixel art, whatever in various categories.
Strategy guides with user input. You could cull some of the business away from GameFaqs if it's serious enough.
"Games in the historical news" division, like articles where a game caused hell like Tortanic, or Sim City being forced online and failing and stuff like that. Never let a publisher / developer forget when they screwed up, and never let them forget when they do it right.
Find somebody talented, maybe multiple people write articles on new games, earning some benjamins through ad revenue, so you have people that are not industry shills. (This is really optional since this is the /vr/ board.)
Links to approved long plays, music databases, SFX and manuals. (You could easily reference things like if a game has docs on replacementdocs.com or galbadia hotel / ffshrine or whatever.)
Comment / recommendation section per game.
.
Just a few ideas you could keep or toss in the bin.

I'm sure this was something that many people in the community wanted to get done for a while and if this becomes a reality, then it may be a way for many people to see a different perspective on things instead of whats usually being given out. Because several articles written is usually from le reddit:^), youtube, and HG101 Point of view.

but on the other hand, there can be a bunch of trolls that clog it up with shit too and then bitch and moan
>>
>>3651386
Well, I'm not a SJW, and have no interest and desire in having political correctness be a feature of the articles or site content (even forum postings, that shit pisses me off to no end).

It'll be impossible to fact check everything if the site gets big just due to time constraints but obviously thats something that's going to need to be done at least in some capacity.

I'll have submission guidelines and probably have some kind of enforced structure for the way the articles are laid out just so it's easy to template since I'm using python and django.

I'm not opposed to editorials but I value facts over feelings.

I'll be the Adolf Hitler of this sites shitter.
>>
>>3651404
Well as long as game reviews are quality or you feel meet the quality of standards that many on /vr/ want or want to edit features that may suit the website more, by all means it's your website and people hopefully will use their best judgement.

>I'm not opposed to editorials but I value facts over feelings

What about editorials that might use evidence to convince one side or the other about certain opinions? would you even consider those editorial?
>>
>>3651415
Depends on the agenda.

I have a few ideas in the works for editorals, mostly along the lines of "It's not worth it to buy games at launch/pre-order because 1. Prices always drop. 2. There is never a shortage of new copies, it's better to wait for reviews, and potential patches, exceptions like multi-player only since it's always the most active at launch or VERY niche releases it's alright to pre-order".

It'd obviously be a case-by-case basis.

Again, I'm going to heavily favor quality content for the site. I want to be professional. Accurate, clean (no swearing, like one of my high school teachers always said, get an adjective)
>>
>>3651424

>>
One thing I always hated about HG101 is that they barely discuss the technical aspects of the games themselves. Like they would claim the FCD version of Jackal is "worse" than the NES version (never mind that it came earlier, so it technically not "worse" so much as they made improvements, but who cares about accuracy) without explaining why and how the improvements were made (hint: it has something to do with the media, genius). They kinda betray themselves as emulation kiddies.

This is pretty prevalent when they do a retrospective of a long-running series and they always start off by saying how the oldest entries in the series are ugly and dated. Yeah, because I was expecting a 1990 Famicom game to look as well as its 2003 GBA sequel.

For a site that proclaims themselves to be "hardcore", they're really more casual than the average /vr/ trooper.
>>
>>3650637
Not trying to start shit (especially since I think that whole Females in 80s Gaming article is a load of biased horseshit), but feeling shitty about Trump winning isn't something exclusive to 3/4 shaved head, SCUM Manifesto worshiping, immature babies.
>>
>>3650065
When the Final Fantasy articles went up and when they treated Wikipedia like it was 100% made-up facts because the article for Ultima 0 didn't find every shit fanzine in the 80s to figure out the "real" sales numbers for it, I knew it was time to abandon ship.

It was great for getting a beginner's introduction to more obscure games, but once they strayed away from that, I just couldn't keep reading.

Jesus, these articles made my fucking pussy hurt. Dragon Warrior 3 was my favorite game growing up because my friends would build the characters as ourselves and pass the controller around for battles when it was our character's turn. While my brother was bogarding the SNES, I got to actually bond with other girls playing an RPG on his NES; fuck them for not thinking that's not a good enough show of girls in gaming.

I remember it was to stop people from using SJW as pejorative. Either way, that was the moment for me when Kurt went FullMcIntosh.

You might want to nail down the structure and flow first and then worry about content especially if it involves help. Reminds me of making total conversion mods 20 years ago, you need to sell yourself before you share your vision.

I think there's an old saying that goes ā€œTo find out who rules over you, simply find out who you are not allowed to criticizeā€, but in the case of the interwebz it's "To find out the webmaster's political bias, simply find out who you are not allowed to criticize".

That's why everything political if left/right/sjw/*gate/other crap should NEVER be allowed on a gaming platform. It will and does always poison the community. No one, really no one who want's to discuss games care about fucking politics at this point. If there is need one can always go to a site where he can discuss this politics aka brainwashing aka fake democracy nwo shit.
>>
>>3653573
The issue is always that' the platform gets sullied.

A gaming site should be "pure" and focus solely on gaming content.

I used to read Kotaku, years ago. There was 1 article that turned me off

I can't find the article, but this was the video associated with it:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ThHBv-Jn_Mg

This was what constituted an "article" on a gaming website that I thought was reputable.

Whether it's off topic content, or agenda's getting pushed into articles people fucking notice.

People -do not- give a shit about agendas. You can think whatever the fuck you want, do whatever you want. If you wanna be a faggot furry and jerk off in a fursuit, no one gives a shit.

They start to give a shit when it gets thrown in their face. You shouldn't be surprised when people reject your blatant agenda. When people call you out on being retarded and posting content that they don't want to see on a specific forum (gaming in this case).

I love talking politics, but there are appropriate forums to do so. Shoe-horning it into your gaming website is retarded.

/pol/ gets raided everyday, if you actually were being upset idk where you could go besides a dead section of infinity or some subreddit intended to be a equally ban happy counterpart to hard left places

I have nothing to do with any of this but I'm assuming it has more to do with the fact they'll ban you than him being upset by seeing different opinions
>>
>>3653573
>aka brainwashing aka fake democracy nwo shit.

Even if you're being facetious this way of ending your post kinda demonstrates why it always happens, people are always going to throw in opinion and humor, in your case taking the position that they're all full of shit and it's all fake lol. Even if the initial side-point or joke is reasonable or funny there's going to be someone who gets offended or annoyed. People on the left will flip out and demand stricter censorship, people on the right will be pissed off and troll, and it all spirals into a big shitball where otherwise reasonable people start saying very mean things and/or a mod goes apeshit like pictured in >>3652162. This would be hard to avoid if we were discussing fucking furniture but when you're discussing anything with even elements of narrative art it's literally not possible to avoid completely, and why should it be necessarily? The main thing you don't want is people getting banned for having the wrong opinions. If someone wants to write some silly shit about how American kids are "evil" because they changed the name from girl to ninja or some shit they should be allowed to, but they open themselves to being told to fuck off.

The point is to get away from people with little-Hitler syndrome not create an inverse of their garbage

One time Kurt lost his shit on the forums when I suggested people get a chance to write a rejoinder or "second opinion" for some of the articles, since in a lot of case there's valid opinions going one way or another on a game. He basically said "We have only one opinion on this site, and it's the RIGHT one."

So yeah, again for the people wondering about the "SJW" allegations about HG101, it's not that they're progressives, it's that they choose to express and promote their opinions as the one true fact and then stamp out any "dissent".

It used to be better when the political shit was confined to the General Chat thread, but after Gamergate it gradually rotted away into a mass of bullshit. And now apparently that stuff has infected their podcast, which used to be separate/unaffected by it (now they're another advertisement to grab patreon money).

What pissed me off was that he did absolutely nothing to promote the podcast for years, still doesn't. He didn't give us an operating budget (most of the guys working on it were college kids or younger so that would have helped them). Yet we had to push for his fucking patreon when he started doing that. Had to re-brand to make the HG101 name more prominent to support the site/patreon. Then again, no huge surprise.
>>
>>3655814
Wow, Patreon proves it cancerous ability once again...

You considering flippin' them the bird and calling it quits? I'm sure there are plenty other retro podcasts more deserving than anything that places does/has its hands on.
>>
>>3655829
Ah, I'd quit a while ago (due to our different schedules and disillusionment with hg101) and I still like/get along with the show creator and most of the other guys that do it. I'm just not allowed back basically per kurt. That, and they're letting sacaitlin (this one nasty cunt from twitter) and other trash guest host now. Anyway FWIW after that podcast thread I started my own thing so I can occasionally record something with people I know on Twitter or from here (although it's not retro game specific).

There was a contest to create a logo on the forums years ago, although I forget who it was specifically that "won", but that's the one that tends to get reused the most (supposedly they didn't get paid or anything. Then again that describes all of the stuff like the "top whatever" lists that they have like the female characters one, which by the way they're going to be selling books of yet not crediting the people that contributed).

I always hated that little tool and how he's always whining about other people's whining while unironically proclaiming he's above it. He doesn't post in the HG101 forums anymore though. He rage-quit after trying to virtue signal when people discussing Muslim extremism in the general board.

Anyway, looking at all his social network accounts, he seems like the type of beta guy who befriends a lot of girls and thinks that makes him a mack daddy even though he's probably been friend zoned by all of them (I remember him tweeting about a girl who stood him up on a date around the time Frozen was released in theaters).

Nightdreamer had a habit of bitching about stuff I or someone else would write in a rather indirect not-subtle way. The first time he did it I passed it off as coincidence, but then he would keep doing it and doing it until I called him out on it.

Quite frankly Kris Jou seems to have some self-worth issue, since he once tweeted about a bodybuilding friend of his and bitched about how bodybuilding is a waste of time or some other nonsense like that (no doubt envious of the fact that his friend was getting meaningful attention from the opposite sex). He also bitched on his blog about movies in which girls are attracted to rebellious delinquents. The fact that a good chunk of his books on his goodreads profile outside the usual capeshit are vacuous self-help books is quite telling of his issues.

Now that I think about it, a lot of those guys do that shit - colonicbh is another. What a faggot (literally).

As for nightdreamer, he used to give me shit over retweeting idols or waifushit. I'm guessing he has deep seated insecurities on that front. And he can't lift.

I didn't think he was all that bad at first - he was helping us translate stuff for this Taiwanese licensed game (L-Man) for an article and livecast. He was less of a sick then. But once the Traycon Martin thing happened holy shit, white knight mode engaged.

On the topic of broadcasts, jonny - let me know if you ever want to record something. Sometime I want to record a podcast about Yoshihisa Kishimoto if you'd be up for that.
