Outside of Nintendo platformers, SNES wasn't that great for the genre. It certainly didn't come close to a System 16 or CPS arcade machine either.

Mega Drive. Both are good, but the MD has the better library and is technically better in everything except colour.
WCW. WCW before Hogan was way better than 80s and early 90s WWF. WCW was just a little better after Hogan, but before Hall and Nash. WCW/nWo was the best until 1999 when WWf was best. TNA was better than the WWE until 2013.

Snes was always definitely more muffled but it had some great soundtracks.

Genesis had great games here and there. Especially their arcade ports.

SNES had an amazing library and superior sound chip compared to the Genesis. They're both fine wines with their own palatable tastes. It goes down to what type of game you like more.

WCW for the longest time had the better midcard. WWF had the more consistent main event booking. WWF had the better theme songs over WCW, but Nitro had a better atmosphere over Raw for a long time too.

UKfag here. NES wasn't really a big deal here so I was a hardcore Megadrive fan. By that I mean I bought as many games as I could. Any genre.

When tNES got released I laughed. Why give a shit about slow pedestrian games like Mario and shitty conversions of Mortal Kombat?

Then a mate introduced me to the SNES RPG scene. That was it.

Basically; I had a SNES for its superb RPG collections and racing titles (mode 7 ftw) and Megadrive for everything else.

Even as a kid I realised owning only one console out of some fake brand loyalty was for faggots.

I think a big part of the Genesis's bad rep for sounds/music comes from emulators and bad hardware revisions. I have a model 1 Genesis with the original sound chip and it sounds incredible. There's definitely a grating or "farty" quality to any FM synth, but the system was amazing for hard rock tunes like the Technosoft games, and electronic beats like in the Streets of Rage games.

SNES was good for RPGs and platformers. Genesis definitely gave more of an arcade-feel and games felt higher energy (m-muh blast processing). Honestly, I owned both at the time and I preferred the Genesis. Even now, Genesis games have a distinct character (probably because of the console limitations) while SNES games feel kind of generic.

Don't know about the SNES, but getting into Genesis dev is kind of a pain. Initializing the CPU and sound chip is easy enough, but the VDP is tough. 25 VDP registers to work with, it's massive compared to the NES and GB. Been going at this for a day and I still can't get the thing to display even though the debugger is showing all my data being successfully transferred into VRAM.

I think the general consensus is that "blast processing" was referring to the Genesis' DMA controller. If I recall correctly, it's about 50% faster than the one in the SNES. Basically, that means you can update a lot more graphical and scrolling effect data in a single vblank period which allows for more action on the screen, regardless of the CPU or memory or anything else.

Nah, same. Maybe it depends on your circle of friends at the time, but the big thing for me was SFII vs Mortal Kombat, not so much the systems they were on. I don't remember there really being any "camps" or shit like that, it was mostly just "hey wanna come over after school? my mom's going to blockbuster" or "check out this new game I got."

Later on everyone bonded over Pokemon so nobody gave a fuck about game rivalries after that. Ultimately I think we were just happy to play anything.

Come to think of it, the first time I saw people fiercely arguing about consoles was on the internet.

PS1, probably. Lots of family friendly games, racing sims and FIFA, no Pokemon or Zelda, some RPGs and horror games but you can obviously avoid them, otherwise massive library to explore.

8 and 16-bit era don't really have the racing sims you'd want and FIFA as you might be used to wasn't the same back then.

If you're just getting into retro, I'd recommend a PS2 and picking up whatever PS1 games you'd like to play on it. This way you have the option for more modern stuff if you find retro isn't really for you.
