I like EWJ (1 and 2) but to be honest their best feature is the animated sprites and general art, and humor.
Controls and level design is average at best.

Eh, the regular side-scrolling levels of EWJ aren't that good either. Variety is fine in this case. The only problem with EWJ2 was that they repeated puppy love 3 times, and flying king triggers PTSD.
EWJ1's submarine level is arguably more gimmicky and shitty than every gimmick level on 2.

Earthworm Jim is all about style over substance. It is a decent game, but would anyone like it if the graphics sucked and the character designs were lame?

Not good? Well, I can certainly say I prefer them to gimmicky stages. Especially when I had all those guns to choose from which I never got to shoot anyway. I only really liked Villi People, somehow I started liking it after 50+ plays.

EWJ1 had pretty OK platforming and run 'n' gun really. Nothing extraordinary, but it wasn't bad either.

At least we can agree EWJ had poor gimmicky stages.
