All it needed was a plot and a real ending.
>>
>>3645162
All it needed was faster gameplay, better balance, more/better weapons, and actual variety in enemies.
>>
>>3645228
super double dragon has by far the most complex and varied gameplay of any beat em up ever.
>>
>>3643115
Just started playing this. It's stupid fun.

This is objectively false.

>All it needed was faster gameplay, better balance, more/better weapons, and actual variety in enemies.
The gameplay is fine imo (speaking about RODD). the mechanics and everything are good, satisfying and fun. The balance is good too (once again, RODD). However, the game seriously needs more enemy types. Especially the green dude who is a palette swap of the main character. Whenever an enemy is a palette swap of the main character, u know something went wrong during development. The weapon variety is fine.. the nunchucks in this game is one of the best weapons ever in a beat'em up.

Keep in mind this was an early snes game, so lower your expectations

>super double dragon has by far the most complex and varied gameplay of any beat em up ever.
That's objectively false, dude, and u know it

My main grip with the gameplay is how they gave the Lee brothers slightly distinct moves from each, but the characters are pre-assigned by their controllers. It should've at least been a setting in the options menu along with turning friendly fire off for join-ins.
>>
>>3646980
There's really not all that many moves.

The weapons are seriously lacking compared to other Double Dragon games.

To be fair, if all you wanted was a port of the arcade game, you were probably happy with this.

But as a kid who heard about it and expected "Revenge of Shinboi/Shinobi III but WITH A !!!DOG!!!", it fell pretty short. Much simpler both in level design and controls, not as great graphically, etc.

I really want to like this game. The dog thing is so cool.
>>
>>3649435
U serious bro? List all the weapons in the DD games then. If you're gonna list rock/barrel then don't forget to include the punching bag in RODD
>>
So close.

https://youtu.be/CyBY6UZqKr4
>>
>>3649612
Disagree...as an arcade port, this was pretty poor. The cons you listed work against it in that regard too.
Disagree with you on the Shinobi comparison making it poor too, but hey...we all have our opinions.
>>
>>3649612
I like it more than the arcade version.
A sequel with enhanced gameplay mechanics and where you could use the dog on boss fights would be awesome.
>>
>>3650721

Wait, you think it's better than Revenge and Shinobi III or am I reading your post wrong?

Apologies for forgetting the topic title, and then misstating my point.
Not at all; Shadow Dancer was great, a solid Shinobi game, but not as good as Revenge and 3.

>>

>>
>>3651236

Not that guy but it's hard as fuck for me.

I've beaten Castlevania I&III, Ecco, 1cc'd Embodiment of Scarlet Devil and I can't fucking beat that game.
>>
>>3649612
desu this was the closest thing you'll get to a "true" shinobi game on the genesis which is why I enjoyed it.
>>
>>3651049
Bought Comic Zone brand new in '95 and still own my original copy CiB(no idea what happened to the CD that came with). My AOL screen name back in the day was (I shit you not) ComixZone95. I've beaten it numerous times and have even gotten 100% completion(nothing special happens fyi). It's great but its not awesome. Making it a tad bit longer would have made it better IMO.
>>
>>3651434
There were three Shinobi games on Genesis. The fuck are you talking about?

Well, technically something special DOES happen, since you can only get 100% by getting the good ending saving Marissa(?). Do agree that it could have been longer though...
>>
>>3653923
He meant one that plays like the arcade versions (which had one-hit kills). Context much?
>>
>>3649435
>There's really not all that many moves.
It has as many moves as any of the AC and NES versions of the previous games. It probably has more moves than DD3AC at the very least.
>The weapons are seriously lacking compared to other Double Dragon games.
It has about as many weapons as at least the first arcade game.
>>
>>3653964
>something DOES happen
Playground talk informed me that you played a special last stage as Super Sketch Turner the whole time if you were able to get 100%. Needless to say I was disappointed.
>>
>>3654037
That would have been cool. Playground talk was just as much a dick as it was cool(depending on your neighborhood).

but... it's not a port of the arcade game.

Splatterhouse 1 is one of my favorite games ever. I wish Splatterhouse 2 was, but it's like they ran out of ideas halfway through the game.
>>
>>3657636
Should've played the Genesis version. The only things really wrong with it are low frame rate of the animation and lack of characters.
>>
>>3659045
They're both shit, albeit shit that probably could have been a classic with a few relatively small changes.
>>
>>3659041
I really dug Splatterhouse 2 even if the original was superior in every way.
>>
>>3659989
Nothing wrong with the controls or physics if you take five seconds to get used to it. SNES version plays like balls though.
>>
>>3653942
EWJ2 should've been a lot better. I usually stop playing after the Mozart Salamander level.

The devs focused way too much on gimmick levels, too bad because the graphics and audio were still top-notch

The password system doesn't make sense either, why not give an actual password? Instead of this weird icon collection system
>>
>>3643126

Spotted the underage millennial.
>>
>>3660593
EWJ2 should've had no Puppy Love levels, or make them EXTREMELY short.

And it's Beethoven, not Mozart.

>The password system doesn't make sense either, why not give an actual password? Instead of this weird icon collection system

I might remember it wrong, but I think you had to get the three icons hidden on each level to GET a password for the next level.

What I don't know is what the hell did the can of worms do in the game?

Oh, and the quiz at the end of the Villi People was legendary.
>What color is Jims red gun?
>a. blue
>b. green
>c. yellow
>>
I still maintain this could have been a masterpiece.
>>
>>3653942
Both games had the potential to be amazing, but were held back by mediocre core gameplay that just wasn't as fun as it seemed like it could have been.

Yeah, the Japanese version is better, but even that's not better than mediocre.

>I might remember it wrong, but I think you had to get the three icons hidden on each level to GET a password for the next level.
That's how it works on the PS1 and Saturn versions.
On the SNES and Genesis you got a pseudo save system that lets you level warp to the level where you collected all icons. There's no password.
>>
>>3667354
That's so fucking retarded.

Hot damn, this thing. It's amazing, and I would pay for a modern version of it if the controls were just more streamlined. It's not quite amazing because the controls were hard to get used to, but it's basically almost there.
>>
>>3678301
It's not challenging it's just boring as fuck.
>>
I already think it's great, but it could have -easily- been the game to set a new standard for JRPG mechanics had they let someone who actually cared work on the graphics and audio.
>>
>>3677526

Not really

It's kind of amazing, I don't know where you're coming from here

Pre-cursor to Symphony of the Night. People weren't prepared yet.
>>
>>3679843
Controls are shit, puzzles are pointless, balance is nonexistent, etc.
>>
>>3679720
I never had any issues with the game. Unconventional, and maybe tries to do too many things at once, but a really solid game overall.
>>
>>3679908
It wasn't well executed was the problem.
>>
>>3643115
It's a great game, but playing it nowadays kind of feels like going back from RE4 to RE1. Like, you really start to understand why a twin-stick setup was invented. Or at least, L/R buttons.
>>
>>3684812

>>
>>3646980
>However, the game seriously needs more enemy types. Especially the green dude who is a palette swap of the main character. Whenever an enemy is a palette swap of the main character, u know something went wrong during development.
To be fair, the green Billy Lee clone was based on the Mission 2 boss from the AC version of Double Dragon I, but at least that was proper boss and not a mook. Where the fuck were Linda and Abobo anyway? Super Double Dragon was complete sausagefest, considering Marian isn't even in the finished game.
>>
>>3685082
There's like three fucking enemies in the entire fucking game. It just needs more enemies/variety PERIOD.
>>
>>3686803
There's four basic mook types (two of them being a head swaps of each other), but the game reuses a lot of previously-defeated bosses as mooks in later stages as well. It's something that almost all the Double Dragon games has done up to that point.
