You should play the Sega CD original first, then play the PS1 port if you like it.
Actually I'd reccommend playing the Saturn version but it's in Japanese only. But Sega CD original is still the best.

First, expect the bosses(and some enemies) to be challenging if you don't pay attention to their 'tells'.
Second, turn off the goddamn voices for battle(for Nash and Luna at least), or you will go out of your fucking mind.
Thirdly, expect dated jokes that everyone gets butthurt over, but still have some charm.
Fourth...expect fun.

As for SSH, no...just, no. If you wish, watch a video of the prologue, but nothing more. The SCD version is...well, let's just say that you might as well play both if possible. Some subtle changes were made to the story so that both might as well be separate tellings.

Sega CD had a limited amount of fan serivce (bringing soap to hot spring event, etc) but the SSSC bromides were pretty nice.

Quest items rewarding you with fan service was pretty rare in the west at the time.
