This game is the very definition of mediocre. The level design is bad, and the controls are wonky.

The fact that this game is ranked amongst the best games on the Sega Master System either must be nostalgia overload/blindness, Yuropoors who never played the NES, or the Sega Master System only has a handful of titles that surpass mediocrity.

Phantasy Star and Wonder Boy III (Monster World II) are the only two Master System games that seem to be actually great games (especially for their time). The Disney platformers are all very good too.

However, throwing up Alex Kidd as one of the Master System's best titles really reflects poorly on the system as a whole. The same goes for those that regard the SMS Sonic titles as among the best titles on the platform (when they are pretty mediocre platformers).

Are there any other Sega Master System games that reach the heights that Phantasy Star and the WBIII: Dragon's Trap reached? The only other seems even good are the Disney platformers (Castle of Illusion, Land of Illusion, Lucky Dime Caper), a few Game Gear ports, and maybe Golden Axe Warrior.

Regardless, both Alex Kidd and the SMS Sonic titles don't deserve to be considered great Sega Master System games.

because nostalgia. also, no one likes miracle world, they like the other entries.

Lost Stars is considered bad by most people.
High Tech World is considered bad by most people.
Enchanted Castle is considered sub-par by most people.

Only Shinobi World seems to get some praise, but even then, the game is considered way too short even for a 8-bit game (keep in mind it was released in 1990 so that is not even an excuse) and can be beaten in less than a half hour.

I have only ever seen people praise and highly rank Miracle World. The rest of the series tends to get dumped on by most people.

This was my favorite! Completed the game many times back in the glory days of gaming.

I recently re-played through the first SMS Sonic title. It really is mediocre. The only big plus it had was the Yuzo Koshiro soundtrack (especially some of the original tracks like Bridge Zone). It was a solid platformer (definitely better than Miracle World) but it does not deserve to be on a best game list, and if it does, it only shows the mediocrity of the Master System's library.

Shinobi World is probably the best game in the series when ironically it was originally not supposed to have Alex Kidd as the protagonist (it was originally supposed to be Kid Shinobi). The main downside to this game is that it is overwhelmingly short. At least they got the controls right.

it's pretty crap, and feels random and haphazard with the level design.

My favorite master system platformer is Land of Illusion, a very well designed game

The master system in general tends to get a lot of praise for no reason. It's library is VERY mediocre
>>
>>3638631
Its just sega fans trying to justify their fatherless childhoods. They are jealous of Nintendo owners that had amazing Mario games which none of master systems libraries can top
>>
>>3638703
Even the American Super Mario Bros. 2 beats out nearly all of the Master System's library. Note I am among those that believe Super Mario USA is actually a better game overall than the rom-hack Super Mario Bros. 2 released in 1986.

A lot of the Master System's best games were all made in the early 90's. None of its 80's stuff aside Phantasy Star and Wonder Boy III: The Dragon's Trap could actually compete with the NES's best 80's stuff.

>Wonder Boy III

people kinda forget it has a superior 60 fps Turbografx port (with file save)

He's right about Alex Kidd. The game simply isn't anything special and the basic foundations of a platformer are kinda broken in it.

Unfortunately its difficult buying a Turbografx game separately since you can only buy Virtual Console currency in units of 10.

The one good thing about the Virtual Console release of Dragon's Trap is that despite it being the North American version, they still gave it the option of utilizing the FM sound chip despite the game having never been released in Japan (Monster World II was only released for the Game Gear and PC-Engine in Japan).

Its sad that this was done for the Dragon's Trap and not for Phantasy Star's Virtual Console Western release.

Speaking of Turbografx, that is another console that seems to be mired by an overall mediocre library, though to be fair, a large portion of its library never left Japan.

Aside from shmups, Rondo of Blood, and the Ys series, did the Turbografx have any other great games?

The similarity to SMB's boxart always gets me.

There were no Game Gear to Master System ports, only Master System to Game Gear ports. Here's a list of the ten best MS games/series in order.
1. Ninja Gaiden
2. Master of Darkness
3. Wonder Boy (trilogy)
4. Golvellius
5. Robocop vs the Terminator
6. Kenseiden
7. Sonic
8. Miracle Warriors
9. Psycho Fox
10. Phantasy Star
