boot disk
The sheer terror that sets in when you put your favorite game in and you get this screen.
>>3637782

>grey screen
My copy of Bionic Commando does that about half the time I put it in.
At least I've figured out it's sweet spot by now.
I've never had the gray screen happen. It was always green or (rarely) blue.

Has anyone figured out what each character represents in the game's memory?

When a game is fun, i get very hard.
No wonder kids don't read anymore.
>>3638292
we have 2 Blockbusters within 20 miles o my house. Still rent games too
manuals
having no internet so magazines, store displays and word of mouth was your only compass. I used to get anxiety when buying a new game because we didn't have a lot of money and they were few and far between. I had to get a gem

My famicom with an AV mod does that, I haven't been able to use it for years, why is that?

Clean the internal pins or the pins inside the game. If that doesn't work replace the pins.
>>3637782
sometimes I'd get flashing colors instead of plain gray.

In the '90s, apparently
The experience of trading carts with other kids.
Having to save on slot C because slot B belonged to the kid who lent you the game and slot A belonged to some other kid you didn't even know.
Getting a new game for a cartridge based system and breaking your fingers trying to get these fucking things open.
>>3641197
I always thought those ones were particularly easy to open, unless it was third party garbage reeeeeeee
>>3641197
breaking your fingers? unfunny exaggeration when whining about kids toys needs to stop

This. Magazines were gold for strategy on how to beat a level. Sure you could use a cheat code, but that would be cheating, and felt shit. So a lot of people wanted to finish the game properly before they would use the cheats. Still needed a magazine or a friend who had the magazine for the cheat codes though. I feel blessed to have lived through the 8-bit and 16-bit era. Games are way flashier now but their replay value is shit. I still play games like Mario 3, sonic 2, Mortal Kombat, Street Fighter 2, Wonderboy, Skitchin' because they are fucking fun and take me straight back to being a kid.
