Play both SCD and PS1 version. They both have their strengths and you'll get more out of it by playing both.

Though if you're dead set on playing just one Id vote PS1. The SCD version is great but hasn't aged quite as well as Eternal Blue CD, which arguably holds up better than it's remake. Though you should also play both in that regard as well.

EB's story shakes things up a bit. I won't go into spoilers but it's not QUITE the cliche SS was. Though a lot of it's elements WOULD go on to become cliches in their own right later.

To give credit to EB, it's evil religion plotline is a bit different from the rest. Althena is good and technically real instead of being an evil demon, like in other games with an evil church plotline; the church was just worshipping her completely wrong for Zophar's benefit. Some of the surviving guys and gals from the church in the post-game state that they want to spread cheer and joy to truly honor Althena's message like she wanted instead of being money-grubbing, dogmatic assholes.

There's also a scene about midway through the game that will hit you with stronger feels if you've played SS.

I heard that Lunar 3 was supposed to involve a war between Lunar and the Moon folks that descended from Hiro and Lucia, about a thousand years after the second game. Is there any source for this?

If you know Japanese, there's absolutely no reason to play the PSX version. The Sega CD version is worth playing as well, though.

sega cd versions ought to be played too. for silver star story it's quite different than the ps1 remake. they're great especially if you like that era of gaming.

the psp version is lame. idiotic epilogue. different voice-casting. none of the snarky witticisms of the working designs team I could go on but I won't.
